    Matt & Phredd's
    Raam S.

I have always had a soft corner for Matt & Phredd's as a music venue. Music venues in the northern quarter have that special something about them that you don't get anywhere else. Seven days of live music, more or less and decent cocktails with a free pizza offer between certain hours on certain days of the week and you can't go wrong. We walked in and I felt I was being drawn in by the decor, the ambience and the general vibe of the place, which is always a good thing. This visit of ours was to see a burlesque show by Cherie Babe and her group on Sunday night. I must say we thoroughly enjoyed the event. The seating was a bit cramped but it added to the character of that place. What we liked also was the service of the bar staff. We ordered old fashioned, the cocktail and if you've ever made one of those or seen someone make one you know it's a thankless job. We were quite impressed that the girl put in a lot of effort to ensure our cocktails turned out right and was very polite and friendly throughout. Like I've said before, getting a good level of customer service in these times is always a pleasant surprise. We were also quite pleasantly surprised when the lead performer of the night, Cherie Babe actually spoke to us for a good few minutes on the way out and took the time to find out if we'd really enjoyed the show and so on and so forth. All in all I had a good experience and would definitely go back again. Only four stars and not a five this time because the seating for the actual show was cramped and my view of the stage wasn't the clearest of all. As always I hope they continue to maintain these high standards for a long time to come.

It is the only Jazz bar in Manchester where they have live jazz bands EVERYDAY of the week! It is free to enter (apart from special nights) and they do free pizza during happy hours (5-8) with any two alcoholic drinks (that sounds brilliant). They also have salsa classes here every Tuesday with a live band, I love dancing and jazz so it was a perfect combination for me. The red interiors and decor gives the place a very retro feel. The crowd is usually decent and trendy (not seen any chavs here) usually get louder post midnight. The drinks are reasonably cheap and so is the food! What I like most about this place is the chilled out and un-pretentious vibe here!

Partial to the odd turtle neck? Groovy smoothie..... Own a berry and some turtle shell rims? Uptight and out of sight hip cat..... Want to know where you can keep it unstructured and cool? If Jazz is your thing or you just wanna swing then head down to the Northern Quarters only dedicated Jazz bar Matt & Phreds daddio and keep it loose goose. Right on....... Joking aside, this is a really top night spot. Completely free of the intimidating pretentiousness that has unfortunately become linked with Jazz bars and really accessible to anyone wanting to just try something new. The decor and music combine to make this one of the most atmospheric small venues you'll ever go. Definitely worth a break from the norm.

Matt 'N' Phreds Jazz club is a real gem, that's really pretty well hidden in central Manchester. Nowadays they don't even have a front door, so you have to walk down the alley at the back to get in. It is however the best jazz club in Manchester. It's a little pricey, but the entertainment is free, so it evens itself out. They have live music 7 nights a week. If you arrive later than 9-10 you may have to pay a cover charge of £5 or so, depending upon the day. They have a good selection of continental beers, and do great bar snacks and pizza (the food is reasonably priced). It's pretty small, but the crowd is cool.

Watch out Erin! There's a ghost behind you!

Yo forget the live music at 9pm and get here at 6pm for the two pints and a free pizza deal. There's limited seating (most of its reserved) so get there early. Only reason to come!

Aside from redecoration and a spacious chill out area, the main difference to the legendary music venue is the stage. There's a spanking new state of the art PA system installed, new lights, new audio-visual equipment and for the jazz fans amongst you, a concert grand piano. What's more, the venue looks set to make local funk, soul, blues, jazz, hip hop and world music fans extremely happy with a packed programme of live shows and deejays most nights of the week. They've already had gigs from Breakestra, Nitin Sawhney and The Mad Professor and Southern soul legend Candi Staton is set to grace the stage in April. My suggestion was actually a hit. I did my indecisive alterego very proud. There are many quality club nights organised by the Lost and Found name and this was no exception. Dance off saw a battle between three major DJs, strangerways, good vibrations and juicy DJs playing a mix of Joy Division, The Temptations and Dr Dre. Amazing combination. Ruby Lounge is renown for it's quality club nights and live music. The venue is perfect, with an adequate dance floor, a stage to match and plenty of seating on a slightly raised level for a chill out. The gig was billed as The Cribs Aftershow but it was basically just a gig- most of the spectators were either in one of the four bands, looked like they should be or were girl groupies who were way too impressed with themselves that they were getting backstage. The sofas and high backed armchairs in the main bar area were nice touches, there were a few mirror balls around too. Plus velvet curtains - hello, strip club? Then you turn to the grimy stage area with the big grill up between the bands and the crowd. That said, no one went past the pillar anyway. Too cool to stand right at the front. Alright drinks prices - get some of their cheap vodka mixers or flavoured sambucas otherwise you'll run out of money quickly. After the bands they had Gareth Brooks from Xfm DJIng but we didn't end up staying.

While on a recent Yelper night out, we popped in for a couple to see what the recent refurbishments have done to it and what sort of vibe it has. The good news is that it's still kept a lot of it's original Manchester pub charm without selling out to become too NQ, the clientele is a mix of Manchester old boys, hipsters and people just wanting a good night out. The decor is...how do I put this... Well it's the sort of place that Robert De Niro (in Casino) would call a "sawdust joint" - pretty rustic, rough around the edges but still some good character throughout. The beers were fairly cheap if not having a spectacular range but I'm thinking this may change if the Castle guys get their way. What I hear is the real USP of this place is the live music room at the back which has been made into a kind of alternative, rock theatre and I'd love to check out a gig there in the future. If I'm out for a beer then I probably will still go to the Castle across the road instead, but I'd have no probs popping into Gullivers for one.

One advantage is the beautiful windows down the right side of the pub get full exposure, with nice booths set up. This was my first time experiencing the upstairs music hall and while Jo Mango was fantastic, the room was unbearably hot. She herself mentioned several times how sweaty she was (she's adorable) and I don't think it can be very pleasant for the performers to have to work like that, particularly considering the kind of delicate instruments she uses. So basically: get some AC, or open a window.

With this being a Robbies pub, I'm just not massively keen on their range - and while not offensive, their style is definitely more old man bitter - even the new beers they say are as hoppy as hell always come back to tasting the same... From being at uni, I was just so used to arriving with a few other people - not so anymore, Sophie. Time to grow up. I'd been to a couple of artsy meetings with a group of basically strangers who'd answered an ad on the internet about starting up a new 'organic', venue focused paper in Manchester. Of course such meetings had to be conducted in suitably independent artsy places. The second such was scheduled to take place at the Castle Hotel on Oldham Street. The Castle does not need a surly bouncer or a velvet rope. This is all implied by the ways heads swivel as you walk in. God, I wished I'd been with someone else. Specifically an old man, or failing that a friend of mine who used to live round here and looks like so much of an outcast that she pretty much fits right into any environment. I am happy, proud even, for the Castle that it has stood the test of time as the area around it has morphed into trend-central. This pub has stuck to its guns. But trust me, there are pubs with just as interesting interiors (mosaics and tiled bar) and history (licensed since 1776) that actually want you to be there. This one probably does not. They have nine real ales, being attached to a Robinsons brewery but again why not try The Crown and Kettle or The Marble Arch instead for something similar? Various musicians like members of Elbow (and man, they're everywhere) and I am Kloot are supposed to drink here but did you ever think that maybe this is just to get more peace and quiet than they would in somewhere remotely cool..
