Really wonderful area to hike in JefCo. Excellent parking lot. Amazing well maintained trails with views back to Denver and beyond. You can get here in 15-20 minutes from downtown Denver, so win there! Then the views! When the trail first starts, admittedly, it seems like it will be boring. You start in an open clearing. Then you can go right on Cherry Gulch (?) trail - which is shorter and more challenging to get to the top. We did see a mountain lion as we ended our hike later than we planned. This is a really nice park that is so close to the city. We definitely will return and I encourage you to go. I didn't feel that the climb was challenging at all. read more

The hike starts out with meadows and can increase with difficulty depending on which trail you pick. Loved the views of the meadows and mountains. Our family enjoyed the hike here. It's approximately 20 minutes from downtown Golden and less crowded than Red Rocks. We came on a Monday and there was plenty of parking in the small parking lot. We started off with the Village Walk trail and then switched it up to the Cherry Gulch but decided to switch back to the Red Rocks trail/ village walks because of the snow and ice. Oh how I love to hike. I was very excited when I learned I was moving to Colorado, because I was running out good trails in California. This park is easy to find and has a lot to offer. This trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers, runners and dogs. The trails are clearly marked and the overview at the beginning of the park states how long each one is. There are separate trails for walkers/runners and mountain bikers which is nice. If you are in to history, take a look at the overview as well. As you are heading out on the Village Trail (which is the trail that leads you to the Red Rock Trail), there are two small cemeteries to look at. There two sets of restrooms and a nice big parking lot. I hiked the Red Rock trail, which I would consider a moderate difficulty. This area is a grassland filed with beautiful plants and wild flowers. I spotted a few rabbits and lots of birds while hiking. As you reach the top of the peak, the view is absolutely gorgeous. You can use this trail to connect with a few other trails for a nice adventure. I highly recommend this trail, it is amazingly beautiful and very easy to navigate. Happy trails! read more

This is my favorite close to Denver hike! I've been here a few times and love that it has an easy to moderate level along with beautiful scenery. Get here before 9m on a weekend because the parking lot fills up quick (there's parking across the street which just leads to more physical activity!) It usually takes me about two hours roundtrip including a stop for water and stopping to snap pics of the mountains and flowers. Plus you can connect to Red Rocks from Matthew Winters Park which brings even more beauty to the plate! There is a bathroom at the trailhead and it's not a port potty so thats always a plus, watch out for the bikers, smile and say hi to the people passing you by! read more

What? No one has written a review for one of the most widely used trails in the Denver metro? Located in close proximity to the HogBack parking lot, we love to come here for a fun hike that gives you the fun range of visual, social and cardio. Lots of cyclist, runners and walkers on this trail and frequented by families and pets as well. Its a great 2 hour loop to hike and will afford you some beautiful vistas of the Eastern plains, the Hog Back or Dino Ridge and in the summer you will be sure to see a snake or two... You can connect this with other trails in and around Red Rocks for a day long experience or a grueling 6 mile trail run loop. Watch out for cyclists that forget that this is primarily a pedestrian trail...they get a bit carried away because its such a great experience i guess. read more

Easy to get to, not too rigorous of a trail, and **PET FRIENDLY** Parking was available around 10 am on a Saturday so had no trouble there. Great for mountain bikers (though be wary of the hikers), families, beginners, and advanced. Saw plenty of people running too--what a great workout! Some spots get s little rocky, but nothing too crazy. You do get some incredible views of the city, plains, mountains, and (of course) the red rocks. Took a less than 2 hours round trip at a pretty moderate pace (which included stops for pictures). Would've continued even further had we not been strapped on time. Loved the weather, the view, the people, and the dogs you meet! Highly recommend for a nice easy going hike before brunch/lunch on a weekend :) read more

Matthews Winters is in such close proximity to Denver. Perfect for a quick hike or run. For the most of the terrane if flat with a slight grade and rollers. It is a popular trail, get lots of traffic: especially on weekends. One problem is that the trail gets muddy & icy in spots especially at the first quarter mile. read more

Matthews/Winters is a great place for a run, hike, or mountain biking. It's easy access & close proximity to Denver make it a good choice if you have time constraints or don't want to drive too far. We prefer parking at the north entrance and hiking south on the Red Rocks trail. Then take the Morrison Slide Trail loop. This is where you'll get the best views. The only downside of this park is that you have to hike a ways (I'm guessing 1-1.5 miles) before you get to the really, really good scenery. However, once you get to the Morrison Slide Trail, the hiking gets more technical & much prettier. The views at the top of this loop are well worth the effort. read more

Great park. Well maintained. Beautiful. Not a single scrap of trash. Lots of people walking dogs on leashes (yay!) and one jerk with an off leash dog (boo). Easy trail. Good bathrooms at parking lot. My favorite sight was a guy carrying 3 kids. A baby in a chest carrier, a toddler in a backpack and another kid on his hip! He looked like a mother opposum! Also, great park for geocaching! read more

One of the closest places to Denver to get in a hike! Lots of different loops, directions, can always be a new adventure. Parking lot is good size, but fills up fast. Definitely good views of the city, and red rocks! A couple of stream crossing, and able to hike it into the cold weather. read more

Birds chirping, that euphoric feeling of giddiness, besieged by stars... No, not a dusk hike at Matthew Winters Park, but my second header over my handlebars. Matthew Winters Park trail is no toy. At least for a novice mountain biker. But it is just challenging enough to hone your skills and make you want to come back, enough downhill sections to allow you to catch your breath and enough dirt to eat that you'll never go hungry. Of course downhill also means eventually you need to go back uphill (damn you Isaac Newton). So, those little pearly, snowy, emaciated white sticks we like to call our legs, better be in shape. And hopefully you didn't keep your milk-fed veals (calves) locked up all winter, because they'll be screaming, cramping and crying. But don't worry, you'll never hear your blubbering legs complaining, they'll be silenced by a sonic boom we like to call your lungs. You know most "thin" things are good...today, air wasn't one of them. read more

This is located right by Red Rocks and even has a path that goes to Red Rocks. We didn't make it that far. We made it to the top of something... and then turned around. At the top, there was a pretty nice view! It was quite a hike! Unless I was super out of shape when we went (which is very possible), I was quite tired from the hike! We will have to go back there and try again sometime. read more

The trailhead to Apex Park was under some kind of construction, so I ended up here. And I was so glad for that! This was a beautiful walk around the green hillside! On a Monday at midday there were not too many other hikers or bikers, which I liked. Plenty of parking. Bathrooms at the entrance. Convenient, right off the highway, and not too far from the city. I only wished I had enough energy to walk all the way to Red Rocks. Instead, I turned back after about 2.5 miles. It was a terrific walk. read more
