I love this store and the artisans who work there. Beautifully handmade items that all must see! Local folks along with tourists enjoy this unique tapestry of amazing and unusual art you won't find anywhere. We met the beach glass artist Beba who showed us her unique jewelry and washed beach glass artwork. Loved spending time here. Our friend purchased an amazing throw which has the perfect patchwork and softness you will want to take home. Come and see for yourself! Maui Hands represents a large number of local artists in various media. During my recent trip to Maui, I visited this location and the one in Makawao. There are 2 other locations in Lāhainā and the Hyatt at Kā'anapali. It's a really good place to visit as it's high quality arts and crafts and the people working here were pretty excited about their store. I was looking particularly at Koa wood pieces (especially boxes), ceramics, and glass, and I wasn't disappointed. While in Pā'ia and after you're done here, take a walk down to the Maui Crafts Guild for some additional quality local art choices. I can almost guarantee that you'll find something perfect between here and Maui Hands. read more

A little different from other stores featuring artists nearby, this gallery handles 175 artists. The shop is filled with glassware and creations, wood sculputures, paintings, and humorous ceramics. Being an artist myself I really liked this shop a lot. I always try to bring home something to decorate my house with on each vacation I take with locally made goods. I found a wonderful resin coated orchid ornament. It's so beautiful. I can't wait to get an ornament stand and place it on my dresser. I only wish I could afford all the other little goodies I saw there. I thought the prices here were very reasonable (all hand made) and the staff was very friendly. She took special care to wrap the piece I purchased so it would safely make it home. I didn't even realize they had a store in the Hyatt hotel - which I stayed at. This is a great shop - a wide selection of products and knowledgeable, sociable staff. Local artists make the products you will find in the shop and the prices seem to be reasonable. I was particularly impressed when the sales guy explained that while the drum I was looking at was made on the Big Island, it was a Native American design vs. Hawaiian design. read more

I love this place! The one thing I wanted from Hawaii was a keychain so I'd have the islands with me wherever I went. I found dozens here, and narrowed down my selection to two. When I couldn't make up my mind, the memorable Jennifer agreed to let me customize a keychain out of the pieces that I liked from both of my choices. Very wonderful shopping experience and accommodating staff for such a small purchase. Luis, who was working there was so helpful and friendly. He went out of his way to help us find the items we were looking for and he knew about the craftspeople who made them. I have stopped in a Maui Hands each time I've been on Maui -- There are a lot of really wonderful handcrafted items for sale - I particulalry loved the keychains and bought one as a gift each time I've been there. I just couldn't bring myself to buy one for myself. Months and months later, I'm still thinking about those keychains, so for a birthday present to myself, I emailed the shop and asked if they could pick one out for me. They picked exactly the right one, and took the extra time to gift wrap it for me which made the surprise all the more sweet when it arrived in Seattle a few days later. read more

I love Maui hands, however, today's experience had me leave without my planned purchase. My husband and I have both purchased original art over the years including from Maui Hands. We specifically drove to this location today to look at their selection of original art by a local artists. Unfortunately they had hung all her work in their "work area". We were briskly told by one particularly sales clerk that we were standing in a "work area" and essentially shooed away. My husband, who is a lot more forgiving than myself, circled around and once more entered this forbidden area and was told that she would remove a particular piece from the wall that he was interested in looking at otherwise he would have to leave the area. With that we left. Sorry, tis is not how I am used to looking at wall art and we have not been treated like that before in a gallery. She was less than inviting nor cordial. i didn't make it to the one in paia but there is one in lahaina as well as kaanapali (in the Hyatt). i ended up purchasing 3 pieces of mixed media collages from a local artist at the one in lahaina. they were very helpful and the art was on consignment so they handled the negotiations and were super nice about it (and i got the price i wanted!) also they have excellent jewelry there as well..if i hadn't bought art, I'd have bought tons of jewelry. a ridiculous amount I'm sure that would have possibly exceeded the amount i paid on art. some of the stuff is of course kitschy crap but a lot of it is unique and local. Epo was especially helpful, remembered another piece of art i was eying, and followed up with a phone call a few weeks after i left to make sure i was enjoying my art. read more

A beautiful shop in Makawao with all sorts of hand-made items. I love that they support the local artisans on Maui. They also frequently have artists-in-residence, who come and paint or create at the store. Many lovely items to choose from. I do find it a bit pricey, but then you aren't paying for something that was mass-produced in China. Check out this store for that one-of-a kind gift or souvenir. read more
