The gym is surrounded by windows which makes working out so much better when there's natural light. With the gym membership, you also get to group classes and access to the pool. My favorite part is the discount on massages. An hour massage is $65. If you're a GHS employee, this gets knocked down to $60. Their massage therapists are fantastic - I leave feeling like a million bucks every time.

The showers in the Mens Locker Room are filthy and disgusting! The shower stalls are covered in…read moremold/mildew and have never been steam-cleaned. The stalls have vinyl shower curtains that are slimy. Considering this facility is owned by GHS, they ought to be ashamed by the lack of cleanliness. Furthermore, the classes are pretty sad. In cycle class I experienced one loud-mouthed, rude member. He wouldn't stop talking to his friend at a volume above the music! The instructor tried to quiet him down as it was rude to the rest of the class. This guy, at the end of class, yelled at the instructor that he will talk as loudly as he wants in class. When the instructor said "that's not polite to the other members" he stuck his butt out towards a studio full of people and screamed like a madman; "you can kiss my a**, go ahead kiss it!" over and over again. Mad! Didn't know what this guy was capable of. Had never seen anything like this happen in any of the 7 other gyms where I have been a member around the country. Crazy! It's pretty poorly run all around. Unprofessional. It's too bad bc it could be a decent facility if it were clean and better managed. Greenville needs more high-end health clubs.

If you're into pools, there's two of 'em, an indoor and an outdoor. I mostly go here for group fitness and while the schedule *looks* extensive at first glance, I actually often have a hard time finding a class each day I'd go to here. Many of the day time classes are for seniors/ "active adults" which is a bummer if you're not in this demographic. Group ex instructors vary in quality; there are some here I really enjoy and some that I avoid. I'm kind of surprised at this, and hope the Y is paying attention to those who are avoided and who are either further trained, or switched to another position. I especially enjoy almost all of the TRX classes and some of the kettlebell instructors. Weight and cardio room seem standard, with standard equipment though slightly crowded space. The room is a nice aesthetic, with a lot of windows and natural light. The windows give a view for those using the cardio machines. The area for individual floor or mat work is a little small but I've not had a problem with it being too crowded to use. It'd be nice if it were more segregated. This is the only YMCA in Greenville that offers towel service, so that's a plus for this location, and, but, I begrudge a little bit since I go more to Eastside YMCA (no towels, better group ex schedule for me). Parking at peak times can be a challenge here, and it's a bit of a hike up from the parking lot to the facility, so if you're trying to make it to a class on time, especially if you might be forced to park in the secondary lot, allow time for this little hike. It can be part of your warm-up and cool-down. I haven't used the trainers here but they have them, along with massage services. Child care also available though I've never utilized this. It must be good enough, though, as I see people utilizing child care here regularly.

My balance in tree pose has not meaningfully improved since roughly the Carter administration. Nobody has ever once made me feel bad about this. My instructor corrects my form, tell me to breathe, and move on, the way you'd coach a kid who's never going to make varsity but shows up anyway. Henry has played flag football, basketball, soccer, and t-ball here, and the youth sports program runs the way youth sports should: low stakes, high enthusiasm, coaches who are clearly volunteering their Saturday mornings and mean every word of encouragement anyway. I've watched him learn to actually pass a basketball on this court, badly at first, less badly now. The front desk doesn't need to remember my name. My card does that for them, photo and all, right there on the screen when I scan in. Still, they say it anyway.

I won't go into details, but "short story"... Strike Zone was far superior in every aspect, and the others were a complete waste of time. (Both of the others are out of business now, so, clearly, we weren't the only ones disappointed!). Both trainers working with him here (Shane and Jeff) were completely focused on the child during the lesson, and actually got results. So, when our daughter wanted training, we knew just where to go. She has done amazingly well working with Sarah on hitting and with Jeff on catching. She moves differently, reacts differently, and uses her muscles differently. She went from awkward looking to athletic in her batting and behind-the-plate action. That would not have happened without the patient teaching of Strike Zone instructors. Most adults would get annoyed after giving the same instruction corrections over multiple sessions, but these folks just find another way to express it (because every kid interprets differently) until it sinks in! Addendum... I thought I submitted this a year ago and, apparently, failed to hit "post". One year later... the only change would be that I failed to comment on how fabulous the front desk staff has been over all these years (exceptionally nice - every single person !!!). The Strike Zone is a cool little place in Greer. They have tunnels for rent to get reactive pitching and hitting and of course the batting cages. You can select from slow, medium, and fast pitch. The speed ranges from 40-80 mph. You buy tokens for one dollar a piece. One token = 15 pitches. You can also get 6 tokens for $5. Surprisingly 15 pitches last longer than you would think. They also have softball pitching options to brush up your office team skills. If your not into it but you are stuck waiting for your child to finish up, don't worry... They have big comfy leather couches and a tv in the lounge area to keep you entertained while you wait. All in all a very fun place especially for a rainy day. I would definitely recommend.
