Although I've decided that the McDiet Coke from McDonald's is the best, the Diet Coke at Hart's is close second. I have this very specific blend of my Coke cocktail, and it comes out perfect at this Harts. Have you noticed a lot of gas stations don't have very good syrup to put in their fountain drinks? You squirt in some vanilla syrup, and it's just sticky brown water? Or the cherry syrup is factory rejected cough syrup? Not at Hart's! The cups have cute hearts printed on them, and the lid is red - it's just a little detail but it makes my 52oz vats of carbonated goodness a little happier. The donuts there are also great - double chocolate Dunford Donuts that are so fresh, the icing is still soft and gooey. As I walk up to the register, I catch up on the morning gossip with the sweet and chatty ladies up front. They're so friendly, and I think they've given me a personal compliment every time I come to the register. I think I might be as addicted to that attention as the drink I'm purchasing. My main complaint about Hart's is the location and parking. The gas pumps are on the diagonal, and in the mornings the parking lot is a mad mess of cars and delivery trucks. It can be tough to get back onto westbound 7200 South to the freeway.

Not all Mavericks are created equal, and this is one of the more compact ones. There are two larger…read moreones both about a mile away if you need more space, but this is great for a quick stop on your way to the freeway. This one only has 8 spots to fill up and normally at least one is open. It can be a little awkward to access them depending on which ones are filled, but they do have extra room around them and multiple driveways to enter or exit from. When I have gone inside, the people working have been nice. They still have a good soda fountain too! Inside is stocked with snacks but not as much hot food since this is one of the smaller locations.

But the customer service and friendliness of the staff is what keeps them coming back. The people behind the counter are genuinely nice and happy to be there-or at least fake it really well. The reason I docked a star from the rating was the difficulty in maneuvering the parking lot/gas pumps. It's always busy and pretty awkward. But I guess that's just a side effect of being a place that so many people want to visit.

Later, as an older but still punk kid I remember stopping in here to buy gas quite often. That was before the craziness of Union Heights, and back when it was an older, run down Chevron. Nowadays, it's pretty slick. Still tiny--the convenience store has the basics and not much else--but it's a pretty gas station, if there is such a thing. Truthfully, I tend to avoid this place, even though it's super convenient when you're out shopping or seeing a movie. It's a price thing. And while I still remember when gas got over $1.00 for the first time, I don't think it's my association with the gas station of my youth. I really do think it's a little more expensive here. I mean, if we're nitpicking. Get your gas, see a movie, get a car wash. Sounds like a Saturday to me.

While the TWO amply lit Maverik "Adventure's First Stop" (less than a mile apart!) were packed, we shared the Shell station with a night clerk and some grizzled dude in an ancient Ford Taurus who parked in front of the door ... and was just there to buy a pack of smokes. There was an old Simon & Garfunkel song, "A Heart in New York", where the song goes "Lookin' down on Central Park, Where they say you should not wander after dark." Well substitute "Central Park" with "the Shell Station on Fort Union Boulevard." Was there anything before Netflix? How did life happen before streaming? I'll tell you what I have streamed, and that's a Slurpee (see what I did there?). Why are they good? And by good I mean awful. And by awful, I mean, are they actually good? There's something perfectly nostalgic about a wild cherry Slurpee, and whenever I get a hankering, I come to 7-11. And that's about once every 5 years. Unfortunately, last time I came here they weren't very prepared and I remembered that they have a 7-11 on 7200 now (maybe it's been there forever, I don't really recall) and it seems to be a bit more Slurpee-ready and customer friendly. This spot seems to be a little less shiny and a little less cared for, but there are far worse in the area, so it's a suitable SEV if you need one.

Sure as shootin' they we got the last loaf of butter-top what goodness from the shelf. Granted, it was priced (per ounce) the same as raw tungsten ore, but they had it there.
