My friends and family all are quite impressed with my quick progress too. Each lesson includes me playing and singing what I'm working on while Spencer plays his ukulele and sings along with me. This is truly a joyful experience and precisely what I wanted from studying ukulele, though I didn't know I would get to this kind of experience so quickly. I can't quite believe I actually play and sing duets with a musical theatre actor who has been on Broadway! I am able to take the confidence and experience gained with him out into the world and connect with others by singing and playing music. Really, I think this is what I like best about Spencer's teaching -- the fact that connecting to self and others through music is the point. Spencer is the perfect teacher for me, as a late- in-life beginner with lifelong musical interest, but no previous musical training. When I started my lessons, I had a lot of fear about whether I could really learn the ukulele --and also whether I could tolerate the feelings of awkwardness that go with being a beginner. I needn't have been afraid. He really has a gift for making you feel okay about making mistakes, even as he helps you to do things the right way and to feel ambitious about what you can do. I always feel supported and validated-- never criticized or pushed. Spencer has a system, but also allows me space to explore things in my own way. I like this interplay. Maybe some people can learn ukulele from the internet, a DVD or a group class, but I find the individual attention and guidance, as well as the structure of a weekly private lesson, invaluable I thought music lessons might be tedious and while I admit that some things feel hard to do at first, I now see that just sticking with it and practicing really pays off. I find the weekly lessons motivating and helpful in making steady progress. Spencer is a very down-to-earth, trustworthy, enthusiastic and generous person, who is an absolute pleasure to know. He loves music and he shares his joy, expertise and knowledge in a way that feels very attuned to my needs and interests . I mean, okay, I've wanted to play the drums since I was about 9, but learning a new instrument as a grown-ass adult, with jobs and responsibilities in the way, is hard work! Tad got me through the initial I-suck frustration phase quickly. He doesn't teach by numbers (i.e. you don't have to get through two books' worth of rote exercises before you get to anything interesting), but he makes sure that you master the skills that are really relevant to becoming a good drummer. Yes, you do have to practice, and he will keep you honest, but that's what good teachers do! Most importantly, he instills confidence in his students and quickly gets us to play music (in front of people, at that). I was convinced that it was too late for me to actually DO anything with my drummery (now it's a word) at the advanced age of 25, but Tad has encouraged me to start thinking about playing with people and working towards higher goals, and I'm gonna come back and update this review sometime in the future to promote my first gig :)

I…read moredecided to take up drum lessons after about 15 years of messing around with bass and guitar and was incredibly fortunate to have stumbled upon Mike. I've been working with him for over two years now and musically, it has been a life-changing experience. Mike has a really incredible understanding of his instrument not just as a musician, but as a teacher. Through many decades of different types of music instruction, Mike is the first teacher I've had that can analyze when I say a particular pattern or structure is tripping me up to figure out why that's the case and then give me specific exercises to address the issue my brain and/or body are having. He manages to make even the most basic parts of practice interesting by explaining how they ultimately fit into the broader picture. In terms of teaching songs and catering to a student's interests, Mike has an incredible ability to find the uniqueness and talent in basically any song across multiple, varying genres. Overall, my time with Mike has not only allowed me to get better at drumming, but to have a much better understanding of music as a whole. Lessons are tailored to you as an individual, and I feel that Brian is particularly good at figuring out what methods work best for motivating his students and fulfilling their personal goals.
