I have been taking weight lifting and fitness serious for about 10 years now. I have been a member of gyms in 4 different states and Maximus gym is hands down my favorite. From the friendliness of the staff and community, to their fitness equipment it's a phenomenal place to take your fitness goals to the next level. Update - After initiating a conversation with me over my review and trying very hard to bully me, the owner Audra F. who responded to my review 4 times has resorted to blocking me. Ha ha. If this does not tell you what the management of this gym is like, nothing will. Thank you Yelp, for not letting business owners intimidate customers into changing their reviews. Update 12/29/15 - My response to owner comment below "I had a trial membership. All other gyms in ellensburg are packed except yours. Have you thought about why nobody wants to use your gym? You are so proud of your business that none of the negative reviews bother you enough to make changes to cater to your customers because obviously you opened this gym for YOU not your customers. Enjoy your very own private gym :). I would not be a member of your gym even if it was free." Response #2 to owner - What is rude is the owner ignoring customers need and pretending that I was not a member when I was. Even if it was a trial membership, it is still a membership and you should have it on your files. Unless your record keeping is as bad as your attitude. I am glad Yelp provides a place for customers to post opinions that you cannot change. The only positive reviews your gym has is before you bought it 2 years ago and the common consensus among gym users is that your gym has gone downhill since you took over. But hey, continue to live in your make-believe land and pat yourself on the back because you do not care. Doesn't bother me one bit. They posted a video on their fb page showing a bunch of women enjoying different exercises. I posted a comment that the women in the video were all wearing spandex shorts and violating their "ridiculous dress code". They responded saying all gyms have dress code. I said " name one gym that has a dress code". So they BANNED ME ON FB! Imagine getting butt hurt over that? I am glad there are some honest reviews from yelpers on this gym's priorities. I am not interested in a gym with a dress code and noise regulations for the weight room catering to the delicate sensibilities of their non-lifting crowd who might get intimidated by a ripped body in a tank top. Really? You would rather have someone pass out with over heating than offend an out of shape patron because they couldn't be as diligent as somebody in shape wearing a tank top? I spoke with the owner. She's nice. She answered all my questions and remembered me from when I was a member. This was surprising and nice to know that I wasn't just another member. She told me they've cleaned everything up and updated a lot of the club during the shutdown. She specifically pointed out the update to the mens room. They've installed a sauna which was the primary reason for my visit. read more

I was a member from January through August and I at first loved The Gym. Members and employees were friendly and sociable, everyone put their weights away and having a dedicated lifting platform is almost impossible to find these days. however when the new owner (Audra) took over things took a steady dive downwards. They promised 24hr access was to start in April, as of the end of August, it still was not up and running and the new key pad program they purchased to work with their 24hr plan breaks regularly. they invested money in covering windows to keep the temperature down in the group fitness room and where the treadmills are, but the back windows by the free weights are uncovered, not insulated, and receive full sun through most of the day and when it is hottest in the afternoon. So if you are using the bench press at the wrong time of day the sun is in your eyes, or if you are in the corner with the squat rack and benches and platform you are gonna overheat really quick. add that to the newly posted dress code and employees will get on your case if you dress for how hot it gets in there (even after they claim to have improved their A/C). The biggest problem I had though was with using the olympic lifting platform. If you choose to do any olympic lifts, you better be prepared to sacrifice your goals of hitting any pr's because if you can't place that bar whisper soft on the platform they will come over to tell you to be quiet. Audra herself told me if i can't be quiet i need to lift lighter weights so that i can be quiet. She is not afraid to get confrontational about lifting noise and DOES NOT CARE about your fitness goals if your goals are to lift heavy. It still upsets me thinking about how rude she got considering how much money she invested in the platform. she bought new bumper plates, repaired the broken wooden base, and bought a new bar that is specifically made for olympic lifts. Why invest so much in a piece of equipment that you don't want people using it how it is meant to be used? I could go on about so many frustrating things about The Gym, which is now calling itself "Maximus, The Gym". I am happy to be gone and if i ever need to use a gym in ellensburg again, i would choose any other gym. read more

This is bad very very bad. I cancelled my membership and this place still charge me. Thi is f**cking stupid. The staff member brought the contact and mentioned to me that it has to be a month in advance in order to cancel the membership, well I tried to go in there and wanted to cancel the membership at least 3 times waysss before one month in advance and guessed what??? They did not even do anything and did not even try to solve the problem..... Tthis place came up with a lame excuses that it was my choice to keep the membership sith I did. I being so kind and patiently waited for them for to solve their 24 access which they have been keep making an excuses for over 5 months. My schedules are wayyy off from their current business hours, so i coudlld not get in, but I really did want to support them by being kind haerted and waited for them. Now this THE GYM pointed the finger and said back to me that it was my false! This shit is stupid. I will never and ever step my foot back into this place again!!! The GYM want to charge me extra? Then i will take this as laying down foods to the dog to eat it!! THE GYM IS FULL OF SHITS AND FULL OF AN EXCUSES TO MAKE THEM GET AWAY CLEAN!! I was visiting Ellensburg and needed a place to workout for a couple of days. The attendant was helpful in getting me set up and the $10 pass was a fair deal. The gym had a lot of equipment (all in very good shape) and the crowd was working hard. The facilities were clean and there was room to move around with plenty of weights for everyone. I liked the vibe and will go back the next time I am in Ellensburg. read more

I'm not a big reviewer of products or businesses, but when I read the negative review about my gym, I felt motivated to tell my story. I moved to Ellensburg from N. California and was nervous about finding a gym that could meet my needs. I was spoiled having had a huge 24hour fitness at my disposal in CA. I used the trial option at both "The Gym" and "Anytime Fitness". After one workout at each location, I picked " The Gym". For a small town, I was surprised to find this quality and assortment of equipment. The Gym was hands down the winner when it came to resistance training. A nice variety of free weights and machines. The other competitive gym in town, Anytime Fitness, had a nicer facade and really cool interior but seemed liked it catered more to the person that wants to peddle a bike while reading the newspaper rather than a more serious workout. I'm sure there are serious workout people there but it just had that feel. It lacked in free weights and related equipment. It did have a 24 hour option that "The Gym" has said is in the works i but not available yet. I do get the 24 hour option but that wasn't a major concern for me as the Gym's normal business hours fit my schedule. The Gym has a great staff. Always friendly and helpful. No muscle-heads or cocky trainers. I know the gym has changed ownership within the last year and the new owner seems to be concerned with making improvements to atmosphere and upkeep. New paint, murals, additional equipment and classes. I was surprised to see the negative post from the reviewer that ripped The Gym because she wasn't allowed to wear her short shorts. Actually, It really pissed me off because she used a site that people rely on for unbiased opinions to air an obvious grudge with the owner. The reviewer even went so far as to have other friends and family post negative comments. Really? What the hell? Your really going to base your review of a gym on whether or not you can wear daisy duke shorts to workout? Judging from the photo she posted, giving us a crotch shot while working out, she seemed to have more issues than just poor taste in workout attire. She needed to park that outfit about 20 years ago. I wear a cut sleeve shirt and shorts and see every variety of workout outfit and have never heard of any complaints. The gym has a great workout environment with a mix of younger and older patrons. I recently joined The Gym. It has been a great experience so far. The building is older but the equipment is fresh and well maintained. The people who work out there seem to tilt towards the more serious athlete but not stand offish at all. Everything from young (look like) college athletes and body builders to people my age. It is more friendly than trendy. Not packed but busy. Totally impressed by the fact that they offer free membership to firefighters during the fire season. read more

Great gym, perfect for anyone who wants a small gym to workout at. Doesn't mean it's not the typical big gym mentality where they try to screw you over when you want to cancel. I asked if they did a shorter membership because I wouldn't be living there for 1 full year. They said I could cancel whenever if I showed proof of moving. So when I moved, I asked if I could send them a Uhaul proof of purchase. They said yeah sure but you have to fill out a physical copy and bring it in. So I did so within a few days. They failed to explain that once I did that, there was a 30 day period or another month that I would have to pay for my membership after canceling. Makes no sense, just the typical gym scheme to get a few more months out of you. This type of thing seems to always happen to me with gyms. No wonder most of America is fat. read more

The gym (maximus) is a great gym. I love the location to downtown. It has such a variety of machines and equipment to use which helps me not get bored. I hired a personal trainer (audra fuller) who has helped me lose 35 pounds and get back into shape and feel so much healthier and stronger. Audra always mixes up the exercises to make them fun. The staff is super friendly and makes me feel welcome. I highly recommend the gym. read more

This place is clean and friendly and not so ridiculously packed that you have to wait around to get a great workout in. The equipment is well maintained and the staff is eager to help you with questions. The group fitness classes are the best in the county. The instructors are genuinely interested in you and your workout and they teach to all fitness levels. Everyone in group fit is very supportive. Awesome place! read more

I used to love this gym before it changed ownership. Poorly maintained equipment, inattentive & rude staff. I did a trial membership which was more than enough. Unpleasant atmosphere with equipment so close together. I also watched the owner publicly discredit healthcare professionals with higher credentials than herself in the community. Unprofessional at its height, and also dangerous. I presume the only reason people continue going is the daycare option. Central gym, anytime fitness, or empowered fitness are definitely the best bang for your buck. I don't often write reviews but I felt this one was necessary. read more

I have been going to this gym for years and it is such a great place! Fine mix of people, good equipment but a place that makes you feel at home. Unlike a lot of gyms that are dominated by young, muscular jocks, this gym ( has them too) but also has middle aged women like me who need to feel supported and not judged, to work out and stay in shape. Been working out here for a about 5 years, best time is too go in the morning or afternoon.What I like about this gym is you can go and actually be left alone and have your space! It's not overcrowded so you can get in there and get your workout done. The equipment is good and gets the job done, nothing too fancy here but it's a gym , just because a piece of new equipment looks nice doesn't mean it's going to take off an extra 10 pounds, in all a great gym to go and get a sweat on. read more
