Loved every dish that we got here! We ordered the classic half fried chicken (for 2 people). The chicken had a great crispy skin while still having juicy (not dry) meat. It tasted great on its own, but my wife liked the banana ketchup on the side too. I also had the fried pork (pata) - delicious! Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside - an explosion of joy for the pork lover as it enters your mouth. And let's not forget the underdog - taro leaves in a coconut sauce! This dish may not be the most appealing looks-wise, but it was a great vegetable side. We also ended with the Buko Pandan, a coconut flavored dessert for fans of boba/bubble tea. **This review is coming from a Los Angeles tourist visiting Canada I remember when Max's Restaurant first opened in L.A. and the wait for a table took HOURS. This franchise is iconic for Filipinos and my family always makes sure to visit a Max's Restaurant when we fly and visit the Philippines. This Max's Restaurant reminds me of home despite being in Canada. Our group came here on a Friday night after shopping at West Edmonton mall. We had a large group and they have a private function area for large groups. There was no wait and they had a whole area set up for us to sit down and eat at. We met the owners and they are so friendly and accommodating! They actually trained at the Max's Restaurant in California before opening the one in Edmonton and Calgary and they are not the previous owners from when this establishment first opened back in 2014. Saturday night and the main parking lot was packed but there's another lot beside with spots available. We weren't sure how busy it would be but it was much bigger inside than I thought. The tables near the front doors were occupied but we had a table in the next enclosed area which had glass to separate it from the next section. In our section there was a few tables still available and even though the table next to ours was occupied, I didn't feel that the conversation could be overheard. The vibe wasn't quite a cafeteria type, but not quite the typical restaurant layout either. Some of my friends had come before and we left the ordering to them. The server was very friendly and he asked if we had been before and when we told him some of had and some hadn't, he offered some suggestions of what to order from the menu. We decided to go with some of his suggestions including the Lechon Kawali (fried pork belly), Chicken Adobo, Pancit with shrimp, chicken, pork, and vegetables, Beef Sisig, and a large bowl of white rice. The prices for each dish was about $15. With the restaurant more than 75% full, I wasn't sure how long it would take for our food, but we didn't have to wait long at all and the dishes came out together. The portion sizes were a little smaller than I expected. I couldn't taste vinegar in the chicken and it tasted more like soya chicken but the soy sauce. The pork belly was nicely fried and tasty. The pancit came with a few shrimp which was good. The beef had a little bit of spice and tender. It's a good thing we ordered white rice and received quite a bit as the 4 dishes wouldn't have been enough for the 5 of us. We skipped dessert as we were going elsewhere to have it. We had a coupon from the Student Union Ticket Pack and saved 20% off for spending more than $50 which was quite reasonable per person. Met up with some friends here for their breakfast buffet and it was good! They had a typical Filipino-breakfast; steamed rice, sauteed corned beef with chopped potatoes, scrambled eggs, beef tocino, deep fried DAING (dried hairtails), congee, and warm TAHO!! This has been our to go Filipino restaurant for any special occasion or when we just crave Filipino dishes. This space has private function room that can be rented and has a decent size. The venue is clean and bright with welcoming atmosphere. The washroom have always been on point every time we had visited. It is always a better value to order the set lunch menu and we have been ordering set Number C. Number C is usually good people and it includes pop, rice, whole chicken with fries, Kare-kare (beef peanut stew), deep friend pork, pancit (Filipino noodle dish) and very small dessert. Pop are not refillable for some odd reason. I usually like the Kate-kare but this time it seems like it wasn't done properly or for me they had used an instant mix you can get at No Frills. We upgraded our dessert just like every other time but today it was served in a plastic cup with a plastic spoon rather than the glass cup. Is Max not doing well anymore ? It seems the $10 we paid to upgrade the dessert doesn't cover the dish utilities and it's definitely not environmental friendly. read more

Just what I expected for filipino dishes. This place is somewhat a good refreshment of a filipino home cuisine. Like when my parents use to cook for my siblings and myself. My favourite dishes are "Sinagang na baby (Pork with veggie soup)" It has somewhat a vinegar taste that you won't forget and with rice is just perfect. If you aren't familiar with most asians we grow up with rice so getting rice is a must. Unfortunately you need to order it here separately with your dishes. I recommend just getting the large order of rice if your tasting multiple dishes. 2nd favourite dish is "Lechon Kawali (Pork Belly)" - This is a deep fried meat that comes with a sauce but I just eat it without the sauce. Not sure what's in the sauce but this is really a nice taste. Oh and just to remind anyone who is on a diet these are somewhat salty food. Lastly I order a sweet drink "Sagot guluman (like a Bubble tea)" This drink is so good and sweet which might not be for everyone so be cautious. Ok for the inside restaurant review, it's moderately big and if you want to have a party here you could they have a separate banquet area. Washrooms are somewhat clean, parking is moderately big as well. Atmosphere is somewhat dim but when seated it's bright. The servers will instantly speak to you in Tagalog dialect if they see your filipino so just remind them if you don't speak the language. Filipino cuisine is way under rated and seems to be getting more popular (outside of the Philippines) in the last couple years or so. We visited Max's Restaurant on a Friday night and our taste buds were tantalized with flavours of vinegar, salt, garlic, pepper, soy sauce and other spices. The restaurant itself is a marriage of Swiss Chalet meets south east Asian kind of atmosphere. Max's Restaurant is a huge franchise in the Philippines and is regarded as a home away from home for my nostalgic Filipino friends. It turns out that Max's Restaurant, like Swiss Chalet, is also famous for its chicken, except it's fried. I'm not familiar with Filipino cuisine at all, and so I have no basis for comparison. Tonight, we tried pork Sisig where pork cheeks, head and liver are turned into a favorful, sizzling dish.The crunchy and chewy texture of this appetizer is a perfect match for a bowl of fluffy garlic rice. I also tasted the freshness of the Philippine's rich marine life in their shrimp tinola soup. The simple sour broth is flavored with onions, tomatoes and sambag (tamarind). Everything is way too oily and salty. From the garlic rice to the fried chicken to the pansit. The kare kare was a let down too. I was excited before I entered the restaurant as I have tried Max's in the Philippines. But when I had my first bite, I was put off and lost my appetite. I had to force myself on eating what I ordered because I don't want to waste any food and because of the price, it is quite expensive. I have nothing good to say about the food, it was by far the least enjoyable food I had in a long time. I will not go back and will not recommend it to anyone. I was super excited to visit this Max's restaurant since I haven't had Max's in over 10 years! I some what still remembered how it tasted when we lived in the Philippines. Our family would order Max's everytime we were craving for some roasted chicken. I remembered the chicken being super crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Now, having that in mind - I did not expect much as I'm pretty sure the recipe in Canada for their chicken would be different. So I went in with an open mind. My fiance and I ordered some chicken, sisig, spring rolls, fried rice, and halo halo for dessert. The chicken was fine, but I find it way too salty, same thing with the entrées. Just extremely salty and oily. The rice was super tasty and the halo halo was just right. The service was also good, but overall I don't think I would visit Edmonton just to have some again. If I lived in Edmonton I might go there again with family if they invited, but would not go out of my way to visit this restaurant. read more

I an not usually in this area, but had to visit the condos property management firm and they are right next door so I thought I would try this place for lunch. They specialize in philliino food so I thought it would be interesting. It has a nice simple down to earth vibe. I was told they were famous for fried chicken os I went with half a chicken and fries. Chicked came hot like it was just out of the fryer. The interesting thing was they did not have a breaded coating. So it was a bit unusual for me, but not bad. Fries were ok and they had the banana ketchup to dip them in. They did not seem to specialize on lunch. The server said they do a big breakfast buffet. Max Fil Restaurant is better than ever. We went to have lunch there during our 1 hr break, we were afraid that we won't have enough time so we called in to pre- order. Our food is ready when we got there. They're ginilo summer drink tastes like buko pandan but I liked it. We found out that they have 50% off of their daily specials but it was too late for us because we've pre ordered, the daily special is good for 4 people so that's really good deal! Anyway the food is excellent I think they are pretty consistent as it didn't change from last time I was there. I honestly can't say anything negative, nice place to bring your family. My problem with them is that they close really early... at 8:00 pm... that's ridiculous especially during the summer when it's still sunny at 10:00 pm! Took friends who had never eaten Filipino food before...decided on this place and it was great. Service was good, friendly, speedy. Food did not take too long to come and it was all very tasty. I get judgy about Filipino food because mom and dad make it best of course, but everything was delicious. Sinigang was a favourite overall, hubby lovely the sisig and the Kare-Kare was my favourite. Will go back to try the diniguan. And yes we had halo-halo fr dessert. Prices were steep, but it was good night out with friends and we left with full bellies. Ps. This is a large restaurant, plenty of parking & there is room enough for private parties further in the restaurant that can accommodate a buffet. Space is clean, ceilings are high, and there is dashes of Filipino decor off to the corner near the entrance. It can get busy depending on the time of day, so naturally speed of service changes. Initially, I found service to be super quick & friendly as I had come around 4:30pm. But as the crowds came in, service became a whole lot slower. As for the food, the menu offerings present a strong variety of Filipino dishes, bringing back lots of memories from my vacations in the Philippines. Some dishes look worth their value when I saw it being served to others. I tried the spaghetti. The distinct sweet flavor was right, but really cheap on the meat. I mean jollibee had more hot dog on their fast food spaghetti than this dish did. What's more is that it was said to be enough to feed 2 people for what you pay for, and I was expecting enough for a leftover meal; but that was clearly not the case. I also had a chance to try the fried chicken which was a little disappointing as well since the restaurant chain itself is known for their chicken. Pieces were small & meat was drier than I'm used to. I dunno...maybe it's the dishes I chose, hopefully their other main dishes deliver better than what I got. However, the dessert is definitely worth a repeat visit. I had the halo halo & it was enough to share amongst 3 friends. Very colorful & refreshing...not overly sweet either. I'm a fan of ethnic food, so a new Filipino place was the ticket this night! The food is very tasty, even if it is from a chain restaurant. The Chicken Adobo brought back many memories of my time in Hawaii, and the food was generally very tasty. The only thing that was a little strange -- the layout of the building felt cafeteria like, and the hard tile floor was sticky (in that, as you walked, your shoes make a velcro sound when you pick up your feet). Probably wouldn't eat-in again, but takeout is an option... the only downside is how far from home it is. read more

The quality of the dishes are usually good and the service is good. Compared to the location in Toronto it's not as good for taste but beats the Toronto location for inside atmosphere and is much larger. It's the prices that kill me for both locations though... When walking inside, there was no one to greet us and we eventually had to find a staff for help. For such a large prize, the portions are too small and the service wasn't even that great also. They barely checked up on us and when we were done, the server ignored us and went to chat with friends that were customers also. It took such a long time for the service to notice that we were done. The server then gave the receipt and it was great that I checked the orders since they messed up on one of the orders which could've led me to be getting ripped off. For those who aren't accustomed to eating Filipino food, Max's can present an interesting dilemma: the food is either too salty, too vinegary, too sweet, too spicy or too fatty and greasy, and enough different dishes combined into one meal sitting are almost certain to result in an incompatible melange of textures and flavours sitting in your stomach. My partner, a friend, and I all went to Max's last night and shared a variety of different dishes. All three of us reported being awake off and on during a restless night in extreme discomfort, plagued with thirst and indigestion. Okay, maybe our unfamiliarity with Filipino food is partly to blame, but we are all experienced foodies, and even the most exotic Asian and African cuisine normally causes no problem whatsoever, and none of us are the least bit shy about experimenting with new flavours. So what was the problem here? The problem (aside from the absolutely awful service and menu substitutions, which I will get into later) was that the food turned out to be completely different from what the menu described or purported to represent in pictures. Items that were described as non-spicy or mildly spiced were over-spiced. Stews were comprised mostly of inedible gristle and the cheapest cuts of meat imaginable. The vegetables were overcooked and flavourless, and the noodle dishes were swimming in grease. None of the food served up even scarcely resembled the pictures that were featured in the menu. Was it just an "off night" in the kitchen? Perhaps ... even the Filipino patrons were unimpressed, judging from the comments coming from the other table. But adding to the poor food experience was the absolute absence of any type of service, and the whole evening was an expensive bust from beginning to end. After waiting at the entrance for over 10 minutes to be seated, we were finally taken to a table by a lethargic-looking host who was far more interested in talking with other staff members in the back. Despite there being three of us, we were seated with only two menus ... the host did not seem to think it worth his time going back to the front to get us a third menu -- he just looked, noted we were a menu short, and left to rejoin his prior conversation with other staff, before we so rudely interrupted him by asking to be seated! I had to get up myself and walk over to the hosting station at the front door to grab myself a third menu, of which there were plenty available. After waiting for ages for our waiter to show up, we were then advised that many items we ordered for our meal were already out of stock that evening: surprising because it was only 7:30 pm on the Saturday night and the place was far from crowded. Okay ... no calamari, but no more mango juice, their "special" drink available on weekends only? Who does the buying and maintains the inventory for this place? Of all the dishes, the Bolobo and the Pork Adobo were the "best", although the vegetables were completely overcooked and flavourless. The waiter provided no guidance whatsoever as to which dishes were best suited for sharing, and which dishes were served as individual servings. We were totally on our own, so it really was an experiment. The worst dish was a beef/blood stew (I forget the name) that was absolutely awful, from the over-spiced sauce, to the inedible scraps of the worst quality "meat" (read: gristle) imaginable. Everything was greasy, overcooked, over-salted, over-sweet, or just plain awful. Summary: the food was "interesting" to try, but I suspect Filipino food was done a huge injustice by the way Max's serves it up. The service was appalling in every respect -- some of the worst I've ever experienced. Between the poor service demonstrated by all the staff we encountered, the poor quality of food coming out of the kitchen, and the frequency of sold-out items, the place is obviously just a poorly-managed business that is entirely satisfied with serving-up mediocrity at best. NONE of us will be returning. If you are reading this review before going, I strongly suggest you save your money and give this place A MISS. It is over-priced, the staff are unmotivated and lazy, and the food quality is POOR. If you still want to try Filipino food, maybe look for a smaller family-run restaurant where they have a little more pride in what they serve up. read more

We ordered shanghai, sinigang, lechon kawali and sisig. I did enjoy our meal - nothing special but it takes you back home. The buko pandan was a total disappointment. I think I've found my favourite Filipino restaurant in Alberta. It had to be a chain, of course, straight from the Philippines in order to do it. My wife and I skipped lunch and were a few hours away from a late supper so we stopped in to have a snack. Ordered the spaghetti and fried chicken. The fried chicken was amazing. The skin was crispy and flavorful but not too salty. The spaghetti was, well typical of Filipino-style spaghetti. If you're not used to it then be warned, it may not be your thing. There are hot-dog slices and it is sweet (I grew up on the stuff so I love it). Servers were friendly. The only gripe I had was it took awhile to get our food. Otherwise, it would've gotten 4-stars easy. The ambiance was nice. The interior was simple and not tacky like most ethnic places. The dining area was simple, contemporary and all about maximizing the space. The restaurant was separated into two main dining halls with a private party room in one of them. Everything tastes fantastic, but the real magic happened when you had some of the pork or chicken with some of the laing with some of the garlic rice in one bite. Amazing. My first time experience with Max's Restaurant has been uniquely satisfactory. The meal we had was very delicious and the plate sizes for most dishes (outside of a combo plate) can feed 3-4 people easily. Many items are familiar to a degree but are absolutely unique as they are delicious. I find the name of the of the restaurant to be a little misleading. I expected for this restaurant to be a american diner and was not expecting asian food. Most of the time, having Filipino food means going to someone's house and having home cooked food. When that's not possible, go to Max's. A great place to go with family. The service was quick and efficient and our server was very polite. The place is quite popular so we had to wait for a table but it was worth it. The food was very good, the chicken tasty and the noodle dish was full of meat and vegetables. The beef dish was also tasty. There are numerous dessert choices.
