I am from Los Angeles and there's a bunch of Filipino food to choose from where I live. I came jn Edmonton to visit my family for the holidays. I am a big time foodcritic/ fanatic. I am very pleased that my fam ordered in Palabok House some of our "noche buena" food. I love their Miki Bihon, Sisig and Lechon Kawali. Not even one of the most popular grill restaurant in Manila or would beat the sisig. It has The mayonnaise with chopped to finish up the Sisig. Their lechon kawali still retains its crispiness and does not go stale overtime. All in all i am very pleased with their food. When i come and visit Edmonton again. Came here for the $14.99 lunch buffet. It's a mixture of Chinese and Filipino food. I think they should stick to Filipino as the Chinese selections weren't really all that great. The chicken/pork adobo was the best! I could just eat that and be happy. The pancit noodles were alright. I prefer more veggies and chicken in mine. There was crispy chicken which was okay... would have been better if it was lechon! Also, the rice was not that hot, even being under a heat lamp. I think steamed rice should be in a rice cooker. 3 stars because: I ordered Kate kare and it was really sweet lots of soup and not a whole lot of meat. Lechon kawali, so fatty...but really crispy and good pretty big portion Palabok, very good they got lechon kawali as toppings, shrimp is uber small, not a whole lot of sauce but pretty authentic Service when we went to eat there the server was very nice very respectful our food came really fast. For the 3 of us, I think our bill came to $70 kinda steep but my mom loves it so gotta do it. We were just in Edmonton for educational and that is a place my mom has to go to when we are there. Being from Calgary this is a good treat. Its well known in the Filipino community...when we were eating we also saw some westerners which is awesome...not a whole lot of Canadians really like Filipino food. I've been to this restaurant a couple of times and haven't been overly thrilled with my experience here. I found the staff's attentiveness to be lacking in attention, and the food to be quite dull. While many people have told me that this is a great restaurant for Filipino cuisine, I have found it to be the worst! The atmosphere was pleasant with the exception of the karaoke bar next door which drowned out any enjoyment left in this establishment. My recommendation is to try the Kamayan Sa Lucena which isn't too far away or Fat Jakks downtown. I tried Palabok twice and had the same experience both times. Needless to say that I won't be going back unless they do something really impressively different with the menu. read more

I came here with colleagues for their lunch buffet. At 12.55$ it was very reasonable. The service was friendly. And I generally liked the atmosphere. That is why this is the toughest 2 stars I've ever had to give. The buffet was more Chinese than Filipino. And more like 90/10 than say 60/40. And that was disappointing. With a name like Palabok House, I expect way more Filipino. The food wasn't great either. The ribs were overcooked. The chicken lacked flavor. You can taste the MSG in the wonton soup. Even something like the coffee was just awful. The flan for dessert was the only thing I really enjoyed. I just don't see anything here that makes me want to come back. So I will preface this review with a disclaimer: I was here for an uncle's 70th birthday party and the menu was pre ordered. That being said the food was quite good. They had so many dishes that I'm not going into detail on each one but I will describe the highlights. The BBQ Pork Skewers... yum! They were marinated well, cooked perfectly, and came out hot. The number of skewers also made you feel like it was great value. The fried chicken was also tasty however it was hacked into chunks with a cleaver like so many other Asian dishes. This always is a disappointment to me since you get random small (possibly sharp) bones that you need to fish out of your mouth or spit into your napkin. Neither option is appealing, appetizing or polite. But I guess everyone else is doing it and it's at a restaurant where that is the norm. The other dishes were a soup with a vinegary broth, a seafood platter, a deep fried fish, seafood stirfry, rice and pancit. Every other pancit (classic filipino noodle dish) I've ever had was better then this one but there was so much other food I was able to skip it. The seating was also a concern. The seats that were used for the 50 people at the birthday were more like lounge seats that you could recline in. Those have a purpose but not for eating a massive meal! I would go back again to try some of their other dishes but I wouldn't order the Pancit again. read more

ZERO stars if I had a choice! I placed an order by phone for a party that was to be held in 4 days. The lady who took I spoke with took my order, repeated the order, and took my information (name and phone number), and confirmed date and time of pick up. All seemed okay, and we were confident that there will be no issues. Now comes pick-up time....NO ORDER/FOOD for us to pick up! They said they did not have an order for us! We have people coming in 15 mins, and we didn't have any food! We had to settle for other food they had that was faster to make. We will never order from Palabok House again as they are not reliable! read more

It's been a while since my last Palabok House meal. The food improved from being too greasy and bland at times. Would've rated a 4 or 5 stars, but found the service lacking. To be fair it was a birthday party with about 40 people. Still the best Filipino resto in town. read more

What a disappointment! It's my first time coming here. Service is bad, the place is so dirty (my first time to even see flies in a restaurant), very dark, grilled seafood is raw and tastless, and expensive! Better go to Good Buddy or Max restaurant where you can expect quality service and food for the amount you pay. read more

Everytime I visit Edmonton, I always find myself coming here at least once during my trip. I think it's because my dad likes to go here alot. The food is good, I'm not sure if there are any other Filipino places that have lasted as long as this place has. Kare Kare is good. Too bad they don't have sisig. read more

I came here for a birthday party last month and I'm very pissed off by their service. Not to mention for re-iterating request (many times) needed in the party. Even turning on the lights as he says "mamaya na" a tagalog word meaning later. Kuya, as I may say he prepares the food, the cook, the venue and food set-up, the sound system operator, the cashier, cleaning the utensils, etc. doesn't have to do it solely but I think he has no delegation of work for his team. Just saying, the business can be better if services given to clients are met. P.S. My husband and I just arrive in Edmonton this year coming from Vancouver,BC. Being Filipino we were so excited to see a Filipino Restaurant called Palabok House. Coming from Vancouver and stayed there for nearly 15 years PinPin was the best Filipino Restaurant we have ever been to. It's visited by Filipinos from Seattle and California. So we thought that Palabok House would at least be the same, unfortunately it wasn't what we expected when it comes to taste. If I could give 0 stars I would. My sister in law had placed an order and was on her way to pick it up. On her way she was in a bad car accident. Her daughter was in the back and she was hit from the front AND back of her car. She was rushed to emerg. When we all got to the hospital she asked us to call a few places for her, her friend, her work, and she to cancel the order she had made since she OBVIOUSLY couldn't make it. When my fiancé called, the workers were annoyed, and demanded that we should have let them know in advance because it's a waste of food, we explained that the person who placed the order was in an accident and she was in emergency. They said we should have still told them in advance and that now we have to pay, my fiancé said she didn't have a credit card to which they replied that they have her sisters on file, pretty much threatening to charge her credit card. The last thing we need to worry about is picking up take out food. We called as a courtesy. This was the most unexpected thing that could have happened. To demand to know in advance and to charge her card is completely unacceptable, heartless, and plain unprofessional. read more

Can someone explain why an order made 5 days prior was only started to be made, half an hour AFTER the intended pick up time??? If you're getting a "big order" from this place, just make sure you order it about 1-2 hours before your intended time of pick up. We ordered for a party and told them we were picking it up for 6 as the party starts at 7. We got there at about 6:30 thinking it would be ready for us, only to find out only 1 of the 4 orders have been made and was told that we had to wait 40 to 50 mins. for the rest of our order to be completed. The owner's reason for this??? things happen, they don't control time, and because we have a "big order". These are poor excuses, bad customer service, and poor management. All I have to say is to this is that a "good business owner" would know how to manage time and appropriately plan the work load. I'm all for supporting local businesses, but not the ones that are poorly managed and willing to take on more work that they can handle at the expense of others only to be able to profit more. read more

We came here for my sisters 7th birthday. We came in at 6 pm for dinner. The restaurant was pretty empty but there was a few takeout orders i know this because i heard the guy taking orders on the phone. There was 18 of us so we had a large group we ordered ALOT of food $340 dollars worth to be exact. Food was good except for the fact it came so slow. There was only 2 servers which is totally understandable because of the fact it was s wednesday night and it was -25 outside. My family are big coffee drinkers and when we got there there was a little bit of coffee left in the coffee makers enough for 5 cups to be exact. When we asked for more at 7pm the server said that at this time they are not making anymore coffee because they close at 9. This made alot of my family members upset, ti be honest we ould have drank all the coffee if they were worried about wasting it. Like i said the food was good! No complains about that, just the wait for it was a bit long. The sinigang came out and we were waiting for bowls and it never came so i had to take the bowls from the buffet tables and actually serve my family. We had water jugs but it was never refilled aith water, my dad had to go up to the counter and ask for beer because the server did not come back to even ask how we were doing. Overall the service was TERRIBLE although they were nice it isnt enough to compliment the terrible service. I believe that the amount of tip you leave should be based on the service you recieve. The tip they got from the gratuity built in because we had more than 7people in the party was not worth the service we recieved.
