Give this place a miss! my wife and I took two visitors to our area for dinner. The menu looked appealing and we ordered a half dozen dishes. When the first two came, they were not hot and our server graciously offered to send them back. we did. The owner - Eric - came out and told us that we were wrong! The food was hot and argued with us. he replaced one of the dishes, but not the other because when the six of us had helped ourselves, it had pretty well emptied the plate - before we found it was not hot. Our waiter was very attentive and polite. the rest of the food was adequate both in temperature and quantity, but it was nothing to return for. Pretty blah food. The banquet room was full of a noisy crowd, and their PA was piped into the public area. Not à satisfactory or satisfying experience. Go somewhere else. read more

I struggled making this review because my fiancé and I have both had fairly good experiences at this restaurant's casino location. While it has never been the same quality that I experienced and enjoyed in the states, it has been edible. So, on Thursday night after a night of karaoke, we decided to go to the Bedford restaurant to get takeout. She ordered the #8 (her usual) with beef fried rice. I decided to have the General Guy's with an order of combination fried rice. Unfortunately, immediately afterward I had a serving, I got the worst case of stomach pain and issues and I knew it could only be from the food I had just eaten. My fiancé commented at the time that she was just fine. Fast forward to the next day she had the exact same experience and it has lasted for beyond 2 days for her. The gruesome feeling of food contamination is horrible so I refrain from being graphic. Nonetheless, the fact that the staff was very polite and seemingly efficient, we will not be eating at this location again. For some crazy unorthodox reason, this is my favourite Chinese restaurant. It probably has something to do with the fact I lived a block away from it's Dartmouth location for a little over a year. It got bad that they knew what my usual was. Since then I've moved....but my love for May Garden continues. and this fine little location is perfect for me. It's nicely nestled in Bedford, which is bang in the middle between work, and home. I've had a little better than half the menu items and have been disappointed by none of them. I love the meat paste egg rolls....only way to describe them. and I am a sucker for chicken balls! If the craving for Chinese food, (American style) hits.....I recommend this place. read more

Well, I've been traveling around Canada. I've been to many restaurants. Probably you have seen my profile that I leave positive reviews often. But I have to call this one of the worst restaurants and tell ppl not to go there. Yes I'm very unpleasant after knowing what I paid for. All Chinese restaurants near this one is much better. The front of the house was good but the kitchen needs training in dim sum. Growing up in Toronto an being of Chinese descent I've eaten a lot of dim sum and know what it should taste like. The pig trotters were underdone and too chewy to get off the bone. The phoenix claws were the opposite- overdone and maybe leftovers. The shrimp cheong fun were cold. The turnip cake fell apart and difficult to eat. The bill came to over $60 for two people! Really?! Stick to the Great Wall cause these cooks don't know what they're doing. I'm sorry May Garden, but you're really not cutting it for me. I recently went with a friend of mine and it was... well... not good. -We were the only one in the restaurant, but it took forever for everything. To be seated, to take our orders, for our drinks, for our appetizers, for dinner. It was slow! I never expect anything to get to me as soon as I place my order. I was with good company, but this was ridiculous. -I got Wonton Soup and the noodles were uncooked and quite a bit crunchy. I hate sending back food, because I feel like I'm being an annoying customer, but I had to tell my server that it was not good. -When our mains came out, they didn't give us a lot of food. I think I got 4 chicken balls and a small egg roll, plus the egg roll was pretty nasty and dripping with grease. -The waitress never came to check on us (and remember, there was no one else in the restaurant, so it wasn't like it was overly busy), which was terrible when I was really thirsty. May Garden, I really don't think it's gonna work out for us! I think it's time we part ways so we can find bigger and better things. I'll start off by saying that we were a bit disappointed with our recent visit. We went on a Saturday and were only one of two tables with customers at noon on a Saturday. The waitress came over and gave us a menu. Our food was served in a very timely manner. We were originally going to order individual plates but they were $14+ a dish. We're used to $10 a dish at our frequent Chinese location that we go to, so paying $14 was out of the question. The unfortunate thing about this restaurant was that the waitress failed to tell us that they also offered dim sum all day on the weekends, so we didn't have that option to order from that menu as our meals were already served by this point. We didn't find out until another couple came in and ordered dim sum. There were no signs about dim sum anywhere that we could see. Usually a store will post hours, especially during the actual time that they are serving it! Our meal itself was good and tasty, but we were disappointed with our meal at this point because we really wanted dim sum. We decided to order two items off of the dim sum menu anyways. We always order sesame seed balls at the Chinese restaurant that we frequent, so we thought we would get two orders of them at this location. Another disappointment. For the price, they were extremely small. We've had them before at this location and they must've down-sized them since the last time, but if they're any indication of the dim sum, I was semi glad that we didn't order it in the end. The ginger beef was excellent, the fried rice was tasty as always and the egg rolls are my favorite. The long, coiled hair I pulled out of my mouth that was fried into the General Guy chicken was something I could have done without. This was my first negative experience here. We went here for dim sum (we have tried every restaurant in the HRM for dim sum now) and we were satisfied with May Garden's menu. They had good noodle rolls, dumplings and taro cake...it was a bit expensive however. I am finding that dim sum is expensive in Halifax in general (compared to where I am from in Ontario). I enjoyed dim sum at Great Wall downtown more, as they had more menu items to choose from. Overall the dim sum here was good. read more

My wife and I tried the standard Dinner for two, Meal B which included: won ton soup, almond chicken, broccoli & beef, and chicken fried rice. The chicken was tough and bland, the beef in the broccoli was a grey colour and unappetizing, the rice was greasy and cold. The won ton soup was passable, however, the noodles were undercooked. We wish there had been more flexibility in the inclusive meal options. The waitress was very nice and attentive, the decor pleasant. Overall, the meal was disappointing. This location appears to be hit and miss on the service. So I am Yelping on this particular trip recently. We went in and were seated right away. On a Saturday it was surprisingly quiet. Our good came out very quickly and was as ordered. Hot and tasty too! Our waitress returned on several occasions to top up my water. Almond Chicken Sou Gai(spelling?) was cooked perfectly, Sweet and Sour Chicken was stellar. Eggs rolls.....our favorite part of the trip as usual....to die for :) As mentioned by another Yelper...for some crazy reason May Garden has always been my husbands...as well as my..favorite go to for Chinese? So it's the go-to Chinese lunch spot in Bedford. The lunch specials are a great price for a pile of food and they include the meat paste egg roll that is so very yummy. Almond guy ding is a great combination of veggies and chicken. The beef and broccoli never disappoints. Plus, there's dim sum, in Bedford! It's not my favorite dim sum, but it's very good. Don't skip the dumplings. The wait staff get to know the regulars. Today at lunch they knew several peoples order as they walked in the door. They were ready and handled an unexpected group of a dozen in what was already a busy lunch. Conveniently located and hardly a drive for those living in the 'burbs closest the airport. But if you're not in the area, there's another one in Dartmouth and a third in Sackville. read more

Price - Great for Chinese food! You can get combos for under 12$. Taste - Awesome! Nothing is too rich or too bland. Quality - Depends on who is working. Sometimes it's a little over cooked. Cleanliness - Perfectly clean and nice decor. Staff friendliness - Again, depends on who's working. Some of the older workers seem to be a little on edge most likely from stress and can't hide it. Still fairly nice though. Authenticity - There is always a large difference between Chinese food there and here, but that doesn't bother me. *They guarantee that the food is ALWAYS made fresh, yet they have a whole chicken dish made in 10-15 minutes? A little sketchy lol. But also this does not bother me as the food is warm. read more

Excellent lunch! I always judge this type of restaurant by two things: the sweet and sour chicken balls and the chicken fried rice. I know these are trivial but they are also basic. The chicken balls were mostly meat - white meat - with minimal breading and the rice contained white meat and just the right blend of soy sauce and vegetables. The May Garden egg rolls are excellent but the standard menu ones are not. The prices are reasonable, service is good, decor is interesting and bright and the food is good. Like all restaurants of their kind, little attention is paid to the other basics of serving the population: the washrooms. read more

I have eaten here a dozen times since the Bedford location opened and went back today after a hiatus. Place was empty at lunch so the fast service was no surprise. Compared to other Chinese restaurants in town this place is amongst the cleanest. Food is typical westernized Chinese but tasty and inexpensive. Good value,good service and clean pleasant dining room. Recommended for that Chinese food fix. read more

I find May Garden is really hit or miss. Tonight we ordered wonton soup and split a rice and sweet & sour chicken combo. The wontons in the soup were under cooked and so it was like eating raw flour & water. The chicken balls tasted like they were made months ago and frozen. The chicken inside was very dry and tough, and I had a lot of cartilage in some chicken balls rather than breast meat. Same with the rice, it was very obvious that our food was not made fresh. When you get a fresh made meal at this restaurant, the difference is night and day as it can be very good. Consistently fresh food would earn them a higher rating. read more

I love hamachis food and their other locations. This location constantly has issues in either getting orders right or customer service. On today's trip in particular, the restaurant is supposed to open at 11:30 am and has yet to open, door locked, no one inside and voicemail full. There's been numerous customers trying to get in and no luck. read more

So disappointed with May Gardens, its unfortunate because the food is actually really good. I called in last Friday night to place an order for delivery but they did not have a driver for the night (which seemed ridiculous for a Friday night) so I decided to walk 30 mins to order in to the restaurant, we were seated immediately so I thought great this will be quick and easy. Nope, after 30 minutes a waitress still hadn't even taken our drink order. I have no idea what the hell she was doing since only one other couple was in the restaurant. Than to make matter worse I over hear her phone conversation that the deliver driver is indeed working. Why she felt the need to lie to me on the phone is infuriating. So we walked out, un-served. Then I called to speak to the manager to complain, but management doesn't come in until its time to close and count their cash. So I left my number to be called, its been a week and I haven't gotten an apology let alone an acknowledgement from management. So tonight, I call again. Guess what, no driver again on a Friday night. I'm trying a new chinese place from now on. Its too bad because I just moved to Bedford and was looking forward to making May Gardens my regular place. read more
