I discovered David Donald Masonry by accident. David is a friend of my neighbors. The back of his…read moretruck displayed a placard indicating he did masonry. So I walked up to him and my neighbors and asked him if he did masonry walls with gates. He hopped the short fence and offered me a quick estimate after I described what I was looking for. His estimate was better than I had received from other people so I decided to pursue it with him. I replaced a 26 year old redwood wall/gate with masonry similar to the common walls in my neighborhood. It was easy to show him examples next to my home. He works with another company for the gate (Miranda Ironworks). My pics don't show the gate since it hasn't been made yet. I liked his quote and decided to go forward. Three people showed up on the agreed start date - David, his dad and his uncle. Quite a family affair. I was impressed with how hard his dad and uncle worked in the heat (it was in the 90s the days they were working on my job). His dad has been doing this kind of work for over 40 years. They were meticulous. I monitored their progress regularly. It was fun to watch my crappy fence come down and the new one come alive. I will attach a few pics of the final work. I will also attach a timelapse I took while they did most of the block wall work. It's 52 seconds and shows how they work (after setting the footing the day prior). I also had them do a raised planter along my neighbor's wall (yes - my neighbor blessed this work before we started!) I'm very pleased with all the work. David's company was professional the entire time. It was a multi-day effort. They arrived when they said and didn't miss a planned day. This may sound small, but have you ever worked with a contractor that said they would be there to work and never showed or contacted to you let you know? I have! I am moving to Point Loma and reached out to a local FB page asking for suggestions on tile installers in the area. I received recommendations for Floor and Decor as well as a local company, Bell Tile. I always appreciate going with a local company, so I called both companies up for a free estimate. I have to say, for me, the difference between the two was stark. At Floor and Decor, I had a designer who worked with me on ordering the tile to ensure they all had the same caliber and were from the same dye lot (I had no idea about any of this). She also helped me pick the edges for the stairs and the other items on the shopping list that Mark (the manager of the contracted company they use to go to the house and provide the estimate) sent me. Mark spent a lot of time explaining to me the importance of a level floor when working with large tiles. He even showed me with tile in another part of the home the buckling that can occur if the cement is not perfectly level. With Bell Tile, Tom (I believe was his name) also provided me with an estimate. However, I was disappointed, or maybe had high hopes based on the suggestions of what to expect from Bell Tile. Tom seemed slightly perturbed from the get-go (he could have just had a bad morning). When I spoke about the baseboards and asked if they could put them back up after the installation (Floor and Decor said that wasn't a problem), Tom seemed agitated by the request, but eventually he said he thought he had a couple of guys who could do it. As for the estimates, I received the Floor and Decor estimate within two hours of Mark meeting me at my place. Tom said he would send it the following morning. A couple of days later, and not seeing it, I called Bell Tile up to see if they could send me the estimate. He said that I never gave him my email address. Not realizing this, I gave it to him. He said I would get the estimate the following day. At this point, I wasn't getting the best vibe and simply wanted the estimate to see how similar they would be. I was shocked. Floor and Decor came in at over 9K LESS than Bell Tile, with a lifetime warranty on workmanship. Again, this review is not about the actual work of Bell Tile, but rather about the customer service and cost differences compared to Floor and Decor.
