Follow the narrow lane down to the River Tavy, where you will find the Lopwell Dam car park. It's possible to actually walk across the narrow at the dam at low tide, or even to take a vehicle across, but obviously care has to be taken. On the other side there are paths which lead to Bere Ferres (takes about an hour to walk there). The saltmarshes are an important habitat for many species of birds. The setting is an old estate and their are child oriented family outdoor activities set throughout the grounds, with something for all ages of kids, from toddler areas up to some fairly daring stuff for teens. There are assault courses throught the trees, zip slides, pirate ship in the lake, (bit stony-use beach shoes/crocks) wooden forts etc. It's all made of wood, and is a lovely, natural setting in woodland for an old fashioned fun family day out. Its the sort of place where kids feel they've done something a bit brave and builds confidence but is safe. There are also bookable activities such as canoeing, climbing and high ropes for the really adventurous.

You can visit the grounds (865 acres) for free, so my review is limited to that experience. For a fee you can visit the Mount Edgcumbe House and Earl's Garden. There is no garden like an English garden. This one was absolutely lovely since there were so many different and distinct areas as you rambled through the large estate. The manicured Italian and French Gardens led to the more rambling American Garden with a geyser in the middle. But really the most interesting for my son were the battery, with cannons, pointing out over the river. There is a Block House nearby that helps a child imagine defending the estate against all intruders.

It's worth seeing the…read moreinteresting buildings within the park including the 18th century Folly, the Doric Thomson's Seat and the circular Milton's Temple. There are some lovely woodland trails to follow, many of which are suitable for everyone including wheelchair users. It is free entry and there is lots to do. First of all you walk past some little shops where you can buy various things from crab sandwiches to candy floss, the there is the games machines area with everything from the latest shoot em up to prize bingo and ten pin bowling. There is an area specially for the little ones and they can win tickets to save up for prizes. This is all under cover so ideal on a wet day. If you carry on you will leave the covered area and come to a play area with trampolines, slides and games. You can get something to eat and have a rest while the children play. Good seaside fun.

I wanted to take a Torre of this railway station so I came along and self-guided myself around…read more It's a little Suburban Railway Station close to Torquay and Torbay, and you can find it in the spectacular and touristy coastal region of the Southeastern portion of the county. It's close to the final station which is Torquay on this line, a place where the station cafe makes great food, and is right on Newton Road which is the road that goes to Newton Abbot. There are some Suburban stores right next to it, and it's old and pretty and features a really lovely tower at the entrance. The tower is reminiscent of something totally different from somewhere totally different.

From Tamerton Foliot, follow the lane along the creek towards the estuary. Cars can be parked at the end of this lane near the former railway station. This is one of the finest examples of oak woods in Devon and there are many paths which you can follow. Many are flat and easily accessible but some are uneven and can be muddy. There are great views across the Tamar/Tavy estuary from the Point. It's a marvellous haven for wildlife and is a "Site of Special Scientific Interest".
