This is the second time in less than a year that Express Care has misdiagnosed me. I visited this…read moreurgent care around 8:30 p.m. after getting off work late and feeling absolutely terrible. Before going in, I had already taken a home flu test that came back positive. I also work in a hospital around many people with flu and COVID, so I knew there was a strong possibility I was sick with the flu. During my visit, the PA assessed me and stated that I "just had a cold." However, the next day I woke up feeling significantly worse, with body aches and a low-grade fever. I decided to go to a different urgent care for a second opinion, where I was tested again and confirmed positive for Flu B. Unfortunately, I can't attach the report to this review because the site would not allow screenshots, but I was still within the treatment window to receive Tamiflu, which could have helped relieve my symptoms sooner. I'm sharing this as a warning to other patients: if you truly feel something is wrong, trust your instincts and consider getting a second opinion. Based on my experiences, I no longer feel confident in the care provided here.

Like many guys my age, I'm not a huge fan of physicals, but Dr. Howard has a very calm and comforting voice and demeanor. I should add that the building is (or was) also used as a methadone clinic, and the clientele in the waiting area may be a little unexpected. I had my first appointment with him on May 5, and I've been happy with him since then. he always listens to what I tell him, and he answers my questions completely and truthfully. He takes his time with the patient, which is really saying something in this day and age of "express service" in the medical community. he really seems to care about the well being of his patients. finally, Doctor Howard is a huge fan of people participating in their own healthcare. he will not get irritated if you do research on a condition and ask questions, seek second opinions, and otherwise choose to actively participate in your care. In fact, he will compliment you for doing it. The staff is mostly helpful as well. I don't like having blood drawn, just as an example, and the technition who drew from me on two different ocasions actually remembered that detail and described what he was going to do as he was working. The only place I will fault the staff, and it cost the place a star, is that they don't do very well with telephone calls. My first call someone answered, said "Doctor Howard's office, hold please" and slammed the phone without waiting for a response. That almost caused me to go to a different doctor, and it would have been too bad because I ended up really liking Doctor Howard. I've had similar experiences when calling, but never in person. The patient portal web site is a nice touch. From there, it is possible to pull up exam and lab results, make payments, and even send messages to the doctor. I should note here that the doctor will sometimes personally communicate with you using this tool. When he does, you're actually talking to *him*; he does not fob it off on a nurse or assistant. In summary, I highly recommend doctor Howard and his practice. Don't let the sometimes questionable behavior by the staff on the telephone run you off. They'll treat you well in person, and doctor howard himself is never anything but kind and professional.

I got my Primary Care office to send one over within an hour and they never bothered to check it. When I got to the appt, they 1) misgendered me and 2) told me the referral "doesn't work" because it's missing information they never asked for. They had almost an entire day to contact my Primary Care office to ask for the referral to be fixed but because of pure laziness they chose to waste my time. What's worse, is after they told me the referral won't be accepted they said "we have a 15 minute grace period..." like I was going to be able to get my Primary Care office on the phone and a new referral sent over in under 15 minutes. That's asinine. The receptionist was flat out heartless.

My first experience involved a serious medication error where my prescription was mixed up with another patient's. Despite calling numerous times and clearly explaining the issue, it took them two full days to correct it. That was frustrating enough. Now, I've been without my medication for 7 days and have made multiple attempts over the last four days to get a simple prescription refill. I've spoken with two different staff members and asked repeatedly for either a manager or Dr. Abernathy to contact me--no one has followed up. The receptionist, whose attitude was cold and dismissive, clearly showed no sense of urgency or empathy. Instead of helping, she pushed me off to Ms. Kia, Dr. Abernathy's coordinator or assistant. I left multiple messages for her, and none of them were returned. I even contacted the Miami-based call center, where I was told for a second time that my request would be "expedited." But when I asked what "expedited" meant, no one could provide a timeline or answer--it was just another empty promise. This has now been repeated with no action taken. To make matters worse, my pharmacy also reached out directly and spoke with a staff member named Nya, who again did absolutely nothing to move the process forward. There is no accountability, no urgency, and certainly no adherence to the basic Patients' Bill of Rights. As my condition worsens each day without the needed medication, I am deeply concerned for my health and frustrated by the clinic's indifference. As a public servant and former medical professional, I find this level of care deeply troubling and unacceptable. I would never treat any patient with such neglect or disregard. Medical professionals are expected to operate with compassion, competence, and integrity--none of which were displayed here. To be clear, this review is not directed at Dr. Abernathy personally, but the ongoing failure of his staff reflects poorly on the entire practice. That this is the second time I've had to write about such experiences shows that these issues are not isolated incidents--they are part of a larger pattern of dysfunction and poor patient care. I finally gave in and took the two hour drive to meet with Dr Ord. He immediately told me I had cancer. He also performed a biopsy at the same time knowing I lived far away. Three days later the lab confirmed cancer and surgery was scheduled in a month. Dr Ord has lots of knowledge about Head and Neck matters. He is highly recommended especially if you have a mouth sore or think you have oral cancer. He has saved my life and takes his job seriously.

If you get diagnosed with an Ameloblastoma, you will have to have it removed asap. I implore you to meet with Dr. Ord. There are a few others in the mid-atlantic that are working on this type of tumor, but Dr. Ord is the best by a factor of 10.
