But, I was going to Italy and dag-nabbit, my nails needed to look pretty. I picked Salon de Beauté based on a random internet review and the straightforward website - have to start somewhere, right? I made an appointment (auf Deutsch) through the contact form on the website and got an appointment for a pedicure and eyebrow cleanup for a few days in the future. My appointment was with Lucia, the owner of the salon. She is Czech but has lived in Zurich for a long time. She speaks a little bit of English, and we got along fine in a mix of German and English. The set-up for the pedicure was a bit different than what I am used to. In the US, I usually get a pedicure while sitting in a chair, perhaps in a row with many others. Here, because Lucia is the main (and only?) practitioner and because she does a number of other services, pedicures are performed at the end of a bed (like you might lie on when getting an eyebrow wax). I have to say that this was the most thorough pedicure I've ever received - my feet were like a baby's bottom afterwards and the red polish I picked lasted a long time without chipping. The eyebrow plucking was also very well-done. She also does facials, other waxing, manicures, and massages. Overall, highly recommended for her service and the prices were quite acceptable.

They really help you styling your hair and give good advice. And they take their time with you. For a men haircut you have to count 45 min. The cool thing is that you sit a huge disformed table in a normal Eames chair. And they put a mirror then on the table once they start. It is expensive. I was greeted by Tamara who was super nice and easy going. The salon is very nice and different from any hair salons I am accustomed to in the US. There are no rows of chairs, but rather a "community table" where clients sit around the table and get their hair done. I think its cool and you don't feel like you are part of an assembly line. After a short consultation session she made me feel at ease and I knew I was in good hands. Hair cut was great, shampoo and rinse was awesome, I could have fallen asleep if she kept going. WAIT, that is a plain lie: I stopped some non-essential pamper treatments after I learned how much all of these cost here in Switzerland. After having a ceramic / digital perm for many years I have also been partial towards Korean and Japanese hair salons. I was a bit disappointed that a quick google told me that this was not available in Zurich. But I did find this Japanese hair salon so when it was really time to get a trim, I called to get an appointment. I was happy to be given an appointment a few days later after business hours but I was quite hesitant when I arrived and saw the salon, this must have been the most basic salon I've ever been at. However, it was one of the better hair experiences I've ever had. Hirano-san trimmed my hair with great expertise, he gave me some styling tips and most importantly: it looked great afterwards. In addition, I typically do not like to talk to my hair stylist but I found him extremely genuine and I was happy to chat with him. As if it could not get better: the cut was a real steal, it was probably the cheapest of any hairdresser I researched in Zurich. I will certainly go again and I do highly recommend Hirano for anyone wanting a great but no-nonsense haircut.
