I brought my vehicles to mcconville's garage for over 10 years great people reliable and very honest unfortunately with the new owners and the old time mechanic Rich it has changed . I brought my 2005 Mitsubishi outlander suv to them with 2 small problems I have a small leak on my gas tank and 1 small leak on a brake line. The new owner got back to me saying it will cost $3000 the tank needs to be replaced and will be 6 hrs and cost $1000 and all my brake lines needs to be replaced another 6 hrs $1000 and another $700 to fix seized callipers. I called back and talked to the mechanic Rich if he can just patch the gas tank he said no and ask if he can change the one brake line he said no they need to be all replaced so I asked ok can you do all the brake lines $1000 then bleed and I'll do the callipers and the tank he said no he's not able to bleed them with seized callipers. So I said forget it I'll just pick it up and go somewhere else and Rich said don't forget to return the rental. I brought my suv to the mechanic also in Ottawa that sold me the car and was ready in 2 days. He said they patched the gas tank and fixed the 1 brake line and told me the callipers are not seized and it only cost $452 with tax. Iam posting this because Iam so upset and almost paid $3000 just give you a warning for bringing your vehicles to mcconville's garage new owners and rich the mechanic is taking advantage. I just went to McConville Garage and I must say that his was the worst experience I have had with a car repair garage. I went in with a broken lever for my gas door. When I asked the first time, he stated that it was my cable and would cost only about 100.00. Then he called back and said that it was the plastic assembly that was broken and now would cost 200.00 plus labor (about 1/2 hour). Today, he said that it would cost me 375.00 for a part and the labor that has now changed to 1 hour of labor. During this time, the owner's voice was getting aggressive stating that he told me it was 375 from the beginning. I was not happy. I went to the garage to pay it and asked for the piece that was broken. He was not happy I asked for it. I checked the plastic piece and discovered that the piece was only broken on a very small piece of the part. It could have been fixed with a little glue (I know, I tried and it worked fine). I left the garage and went to my car. I checked it and there was some money that was missing. I went back into the garage and advised the owner that I was missing the money. He stated that "I would find that very unusual for that to happen" in a very aggressive tone. I am not one to stand by and take it. I told him "I don't care what you think this is unusual but I am missing the money". I left the garage to just leave and that's it. He came to my car again in an aggressive manner and began to swear at me and saying "they would not steal any money". I told him I did not say it was stolen, just missing. I have to state here that I was not in a pleasant mood. He came over to my car and I told him where the money was located. Again, he was aggressive! He then asked if they technician had seen the money. The technician, who by the way was very innocent in this matter, stated that he put the money in my glove box. The owner then started to swear even more by stating "that HE would not steal money".He then slammed my car door very hard and then started to scream "leave my premises, you fucker". I exclaimed "What the hell, you don't slam my car door like that!" He left to go inside. As I was leaving, I stopped to let the technician that he was not to blame for this. The owner then came out again and started to curse at me and telling me to get off his property. I have never had been subjected to such aggression or treatment as I got from this owner. I used to enjoy going into that garage. The people who were there previously where very cooperative and understanding and care about their customers. This owner does not care about his clients and from what I can see, does not mind taking advantage of his customers also. I can only say that they lost a good customer. read more

I don't get all the hate of previous reviews. We live near by and have used them a couple of times. The price is always really reasonable and they have loaner cars which is a God send if it's a problem which is going to take a few days to fix. I recently had a small issue with a newly acquired car. When I brought it in, even though they were busy they offered to look right away since they felt like it might have a quick fix. It took about 15 minutes and they refused to charge me even though they definitely didn't recognize me since normally my wife is the one who goes in. Definitely check them out. read more

Stay far away. Service - adequate. And yes they have loaners, not not "free" as claimed - you'll pay double vs other garages, plus lots of pressure for totally unnecessary service. Last year I took in a car I was selling for a pre-sale inspection. McConville's claimed it needed $2000+ in repairs, including complete replacement of "badly corroded and seized" front and back pads and rotors. I was shocked and took it back to the place that had just replaced the set 6 months prior, where the car was put on a hoist where they showed me brakes that had a light coating of surface rust, totally standard for Ontario winter exposure. Gave them another chance with a basic oil change over the summer, just because they're a block from my house. Result? A scary set of "necessary" recommended repairs including a new battery, engine flush, fluid changes and new wipers. My regular mechanic laughed when I brought him the invoice, showing me how all that stuff was fine. Scammers. read more

Incredible service ..5*+.. I arrived there 5 min before closing with car issues . All the loaner cars were locked up .. but they unlocked the gates and drove out a loaner car even though by now they were actually closed . Thanks for the staff for staying a little late for me.then I got a call the next day early ( unfortunately I slept in late ) and they found the problem .. solved it and the next day it was ready !! The price for the repair was actually lower than my other friend thought it would cost .. so bonus! And now it drives better than ever ! Thanks guys.. keep up the good work .. The owner of this shop is Bruce McConville. I worked for him 10 years ago and it still haunts me. Things I remember......he told me to cut a customers heater hose and install a plastic T fitting that accepts a garden hose to do a coolant flush. He explained to me that he flushes all cars this way, hooking a garden hose to the car and letting all the coolant flow into the sewer. Any real mechanic and environmentally aware person knows that this is not the way to flush a cooling system. He made me do renovations on his apartment building that he bought adjacent to his shop. I now know I was scrapping asbestos tiles with no safety equipment. When they were digging in the back yard with a backhoe, the ground was saturated in oil. Rumour around the shop was that the underground tank that held waste oil leaks. That explains why I rarely saw a used oil recycling truck come around. I was an apprentice mechanic and Bruce used me. He told me "I can always tell who has it in them to be a mechanic and who doesn't. Sorry to tell you but you aren't a mechanic". So he made me do rustproofing and car detailing instead. Well Bruce. I'm a heavy duty diesel mechanic now. Sorry , you were wrong about me. I hope your business practices have changed. read more

I've been going to McConville's garage for several years now. A loaner car is available from every service from a major repair down to an oil change. I don't have a lot of basis for comparison but feel that I'm treated fairly. Both of our vehicles get a 300-point inspection and a Krown rustproofing every year. I don't always follow their service recommendations and sometimes I do the recommended repair or maintenance myself, but it's good to know what's going on with my vehicles. On my last visited I requested that my wheel lug nuts be tightened by hand with a torque wrench. They accommodated me with no problem. read more

There are good things and bad things about this garage and you need to be careful. I might even go as far as to suggest if you just want basic repairs to your car, don't go here. It is a popular garage, well respected in the community and often comes recommended. Out of the gate, they will sell you a bumper to bumper inspection for about $300 and they will lay out what should be done and when. As you see in other reviews they may point out things that others might feel don't need to be addressed. For example, they flagged my parking break.. IT HAD BEEN REPLACED 6 MONTHS PRIOR because it was an issue when the car was being safety checked. However, I wouldn't say that they don't care about you or your car... maybe they are just trying to warn you about something before you end up broken down on the side of the road. I understand how business works and I can appreciate the strategy of using the bumper to bumper inspection to costs of initial visits and secure future business. I guess my issue after my latest visit was the attitude I received when I tried to keep the cost of my work down. Dropping $1000 on car repairs in a day in a pretty significant amount of money so if you're cheap, don't go here. I am getting a second opinion next week on the breaks they are so anxious to have done for me. By the looks of it, I am not the only one who has had this problem. Both times I was there, I didn't appreciate their urges to pick the car up ASAP as well. I get you have a lot you need to manage. I am busy and I can't often get to the garage at the drop of a hat. I also don't appreciate attempts to upsell every minute and attitude if I don't take you up on the offer and I don't appreciate attitude when I try to manage how much I'm spending. So if you have a bunch of money, don't care how much you spend and appreciate a loaner car, go here. If not, maybe go somewhere else. read more

Took my car in for a routine repair and dealt with Bruce the owner. After telling him specifically what I wanted fixed he tried to add on a brake job, battery and belt, all of which were totally fine (I know cars and have worked on them before). He also tried to say they had already started the work so I'd be forced to pay for it 45 minutes after they had started. When I picked up my car I pulled him aside to tell him I didn't appreciate it and I wouldn't be returning, and he actually had the nerve to tell me I was wasting his time and I should come back when he's not so busy. I was dumbfounded, but obviously he didn't care about losing a customer. After reading other reviews on the internet I now know this guy is a scam artist and runs up peoples' bills, also overcharges for his hourly rate. The loaner cars are merely a perk so dumb people overlook the fact they are getting ripped off. Would avoid this place unless you want unnecessary charges or don't know any better. read more

McConville's destroyed my car! I regret not reading these reviews beforehand. The owner, Bruce and his techs are condescending con-artists who overcharged me and massacred my vehicle beyond repair. I brought my car in because it was shaking and the engine light was on. I was charged 79.95$ for a 300-point inspection and an additional 219.60$ for a "check engine lamp on - diagnosis", which apparently requires 1.5 hours of labour. This diagnosis procedure, according to Bruce, is extremely precise and will pinpoint the actual issue. Except it failed to do this. My husband and I each individually spoke to a tech, who quoted us a final cost of under $300.00. Upon pick up the price had skyrocketed to $575.54 as they had neglected to mention this incredibly expensive diagnosis fee. I started my car and noted the engine light was STILL ON! I mentioned this to 2 techs who attempted to convince me this did not matter. After having paid for over 2 HOURS of labour I had to stand by while they reset the engine light. Less than 5 km from the garage the car was STILL SHAKING AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS BACK ON! I opened the engine and noticed they had NOT REINSTALLED THE ENGINE COVER. The TCS light was now also on. I immediately called McConville's and spoke to Bruce. He requested I bring it back. I returned the van the next day but supervised everything they did. The tech, Rick, argued with me that the TCS light was on before they touched my car. NO, it was NOT! Bruce offered free labour to replace the actual broken ignition coil but I refused. My husband showed me how to diagnose the proper broken ignition coil - it took him literally 30 seconds and certainly did NOT require $220.00 worth of work. We went instead to Kenny U-Pull and installed an $8 used ignition coil. I could have saved $575.00 and a lot of heartache by NEVER having gone to this horrible garage. Now, 4 days later, the van smells strongly of gas when idling and the exhaust makes a deafening sound whenever I accelerate. My car is ruined! I spoke to Bruce at length to try to comprehend how changing an ignition coil had cost almost $600.00 and led to the demise of my entire vehicle. He claimed that both ignition coils must have broken within that 2-day timeframe. This is hugely unlikely and still does not explain the myriad other issues that surfaced as soon as I pulled out of McConville's. He said it was "Murphy's Law". In other words, they can not provide an explanation or justification for how McConville's managed to completely destroy my van. read more

Both our cars are serviced and repaired here.Until today I would have given them 4 stars. The hourly charge of 128 $/hr is high but in the past the work was preformed well and I felt I received value for money. Today I had my battery checked. It took 10 minutes tops. It was bad. I was going to go to Costco to get another and Chelsea ( she is nice customer rep)offered a free loaner. I thought that was probably a good idea since I wasn't sure my car would start. I came back to have the new battery put in. My bill was $123.68 for checking the battery and installation. That check at 10 minutes and change at ??. How long does it take to undo 4 bolts lift the battery in place and re-due the bolts. They charged me Two Half hours for $128.00. ( I got a seniors discount) I was not happy so I called back Bruce. He offered a 25$ credit on my next service. I was not happy with that. Bruce seemed only to care that I used his free car and did not buy my battery there ( no one mentioned that I could by batteries there). He kept interrupting and all in all was quite rude. If he is the owner he need to take a few customer service seminars. He lost a client. AM I CRAZY OR DOES $123.68 SEEN LIKE A LOT FOR A TEST I COULD HAVE GOT AT ANOTHER GARAGE FOR 25$ AND AN INSTALLATION OF A BATTERY. read more

For 15+ years I've taken my car to McConnville's based on two things: (i) Bruce is a straight-talker; and (ii) they identify what needs to be done and do a thorough job. I brought my van there for a safety check Monday morning. I was told by Bruce McConville (owner) that the charge for the safety check would be $79.95 and if it did not pass I would only pay the additional $10 for the certificate once the repairs were done. Sounds good so far? Ok so....I get a call Monday afternoon by his "technician" with the rundown on what the van needs (heater core, two rear flex hoses, one left side glass, deseize the ebrake cable...) sounds good so far? Yep since I fix it myself looking at about a half day. So Wednesday morning I drop in to pick it up....wait for it......$159.95.....so I ask Bruce why he charged me more when he quoted $79.95??? Bruce McConville "well it was up on the hoist and I had to hammer away at the drums to look at the rear brake condition so I am charging you for the labour..." me "I don't f*king think so...you did not call me to tell me the surcharge.
