I didn't even wash my hands because of how filthy it was. I would hate to have taken any children to use these restrooms. I wished I could've bottled the pine smell! The deer and bunnies were happy to grace us with their presence also. Always a bonus to see animals. Not a very busy lake early in the morning had us walking the short path by ourselves and spending plenty of time reading signs and taking in the scenery. What a neat stop. So glad someone had the mind to preserve parts of our history, makes my imagination and appreciation skyrocket.

When we arrived on a cool, sunny Saturday in late spring, we found it totally empty and ours "for the taking". The drive from the main road to the interior of the park quickly becomes scenic over the rolling hills and outcrops of dolomite and flint. West Texas standard flora abounds on these short plateaus and rocky hillsides. Think agaves, cacti, yellow wildflowers, and wiry, weather-worn trees. You can drive on in two different directions from the visitor center and snag up-close-and-personal views of the limestone boulders strewn about the park. One particular road offers several further explorations via dirt roads. We even came upon a stand-alone hoodoo in the midst of a valley surrounded by sentinel hills. Back at the visitor center, you will of course find a typical large assortment of goodies. Stickers, patches, books, stuffed animals, t-shirts, magnets, and many more trinkets. Don't forget to get your parks passport stamped! The staff, though in short supply these days, was very helpful. There are ranger-led tours usually at 10:00 and 13:00 everyday if staff is available and if the weather is not too hot. (Y'all it gets hot here in the summer - it is the desert after all!) Last but certainly not least, there is a walk through mini-exhibit explaining the geological and historical significance of the area's flint deposits. Not to be missed are two videos - one on flintknapping and one on the history and relevance of the area and its people. Best of all? This park is totally free to visit, so you owe it to yourself to get out here.

And then, they were. 10 cars buried at a steep slope, dripping in puddles of color, stand stark in the West Texas flat, dry dirt. It's weird. It's hokey. It's one of the most Texas things to ever be in Texas; I love it! If you like roadside attractions, this is totally worth the turnoff. If you're driving to or from Texas to Colorado, just do it. It's a fun solo excursion. It's a fun family excursion. There's something about adding to the paint and joining the living history of paint upon paint, upon paint. Only in Texas...

i was visiting Amarillo for a week and needed to get my runs in while training for a marathon and…read moreone of the closest trails and parks was Medi Park on the north side of town in the medical district. There's a large playground, the Amarillo Botanical Garden next door and a 1 mile loop around the pond which made it easy to do my runs. I was warned about the geese infestation and the possibility of geese poop on the trail. I didn't see any while I was visiting, but I thought that was worth noting. There's an extended part of the trail but you have to cross traffic for it, so the one mile loop worked best for me. A lot of people were walking the trail through my three visits, a school bus was there with kids in the playground and on Saturday plenty of people were fishing in the pond. A really great and well maintained park!

This park is near the Don Harrington Discovery center and they had a fairly large tortoise living on the outside premises. It was neat. I would like to come back to visit that museum. All-in-all .... This park was the best part of Amarillo on this stop through.

A day pass is $8.00 and is good till 10:00PM (you can leave and come back). They give you a map as well. You can drive the whole thing and see a lot from your car. There's also plenty of pull-offs for picture opportunities. For ones that like hiking, there's plenty of that there. I'm not big into hiking, and I also didn't pack to do so. Lol. There is cave you see from the road, and if you want you can do a short hike to it. I wasn't on planning really hiking anywhere but this was short enough. Easy to get up, going down you have to be a lil careful. Good place for pictures too. Camping ground are available too. Anyways, if you're in town visiting or never have been there, I definitely recommend it!
