I recently participated in one of their on-line auctions from the opposite side of the country. The on-line platform worked very smoothly, and bidding proceeded at a nice quick pace. I ended up purchasing some very rare and valuable fishing rods. Cathy at the office helped facilitate the payment, and Mr. McInnis and his staff personally saw to it that the rods were well-taken care of and stored in a safe place until I could have a friend of mine pick them up. Although they are presumably not experts on antique fishing tackle, they did recognize from their years of being in the business that these particular items were special. As I live out on the West Coast, I will probably never have the opportunity to use them on the selling end, but I won't hesitate to participate in any of their future auctions. read more

I LOVE THIS AUCTION HOUSE!!! The staff is warm, loving and professional. I signed up to do phone bidding and they were very kind and gave excellent advice as I live in Canada and they recommended Bernie to drive items into Canada...what a great service to offer a buyer!! I really enjoyed talking to all the staff and it felt like I have known them my whole life; like a relative that I can't wait to talk to. The gentleman that called to do the phone bidding was so polite and great to talk to, while quickly executing my bids perfectly; additionally, I won! VERY IMPRESSED with the Auction estimates. It is very hard to give a price range the item will sell for but they are VERY accurate; much more precise then any other Auction House I have seen, and I have bid with hundreds--Bravo for that. Often Auctions give very low estimates to try to attract more bidders or give very high estimates to convince a consignor they will get more than they will to get them to give the item to sell-- THE AUCTION HOUSE DOES NOT PLAY ANY GAMES THAT SO MANY OTHERS DO! The selection of Antiques, Art and Collectibles are outstanding, as are, the VERY accurate pictures posted by the Auction showing the damage if any. This is also VERY rare as most auctions hide damage or make the item look better than it does, so they are HIGHLY RATED FOR HONESTLY and accuracy in pictures and descriptions!! VERY IMPRESSED with the prices they achieve for the antiques!!! I plan to consign with them also now!! They try very hard get the best price they can for the consignor and this is very obvious to me while remaining honest--WHAT A RARE COMBINATION. The value for the buyer is also excellent as you get great quality and rare items for a great price. To me they are wonderfully old-school having integrity, polish and charm that, other then this auction house, rarely exists anymore. I wish all auction houses were like John McInnis Auctioneers!!! I watched online waiting for my phone bid and looked at the wonderful Antiques in-front of the Auctioneer. My painting as picked up in November. I had to call every 6-8 weeks to try to find out when it was going up for auction. It sold at the end of May. I had to call to see what it sold for, then I had to keep calling,waiting for my check which I didn't receive until the middle of July! Does it take 6+ weeks to cut a check? Participated in an Auction with this auction house via online service. I called to pay my invoice on the Monday after the auction. I called to arrange pick-up and shipping with the recommended shipper and waited for the call to pay the shipping charges from UPS. It never came. I called back to the auction house one week later to find they juxtaposed numbers in the CC. They simply put my file aside and never contacted me via phone or Email. I had to find it by calling back after waiting. they rerun my card and prepare my lot for pickup. Skip ahead another 3 days,I call the recommended shipper who does not look up what is happening with my item but simply says we will contact you when its ready. So I email the auction house who assure me that the auction house picked up my item 3 day prior. Skip ahead another week, I still have no call from the shipper. I call them. The shipper was not given all of my items that were in my lot!! (its been over a week since they were picked up). So many things were unprofessional, with the shipper and the auction house here but two stick out for the Auction house. They did not call me or contact me when the card was declined. They did not give the entire lot to the shipper when they picked my item up. They will plead that they are swamped. I will say they are understaffed (see other reviews). It is apparent that one person doing everything only works when everything goes perfectly. Since life is not perfect they should looking into adding staff. I wont say do not buy from them, however, if you do you may wait a month to get your items. Slow. slow. Slow. (with this kind of service for items when they are paid for, they should not be charging ANY storage fees) read more

this review pertains only to the store in Florida. Firstly, We have participated in 7 different auctions in May (across several different parts of USA) and this was the ONLY auction house which actually charged storage fees. (275$ and that after bargaining down from $500). Yes, we are VERY out of town (outside USA) and we had to pick up 5 weeks after the auction, and yes, the store is small. But for any out-of-town buyer this is something to consider - many auction houses have large facilities where they store items as a courtesy for buyers from far away at no charge (despite disclosures saying that they would). so, while we cannot blame the store for following its own printed policy, we found all other auction houses more accommodating in this respect. Secondly, we won a console table ($1000) which shown well in the photos, But photos did not show major problems with the table and we feel we threw 1000$ away. So, request condition reports if you bid remotely because this auction house downplays the problems. (not the only one to do so mind you). to be fair we won 2 other lots which we were pleased with and the lady helping us was very nice so it earned the 2nd star. read more

We moved to Amesbury about three years ago. I always wanted to go to an auction and when I saw that there was a local auction house, I waited for their next scheduled auction. Everyone was very helpful and took the time to explain things to me. Having just purchased an antique house, we were looking for period furniture. I've been to many auctions run by John McInnis, purchasing mostly furniture and some artwork and accessories. I've gotten some really good deals (it seems most people don't want to buy and move large furniture). It's nice that John greets me every time I attend one of his auctions. Also, they have provided delivery of large furniture, which has been a life saver (actually I believe his employees do deliveries on the side). I'm not an "auction rat", so I can't really give a comparison to other auctioneers. I can say that I've always had a good time and I'm looking forward to the next auction run by John. read more

I went to the Hilltop auction today, which has been publicized like crazy for the last month. As expected, it was packed. $100 deposit was required to bid. Fine. Normal. BUT, there was 1 poor woman at the desk to give deposit refunds back AND ring up winners. The line was horrific. It was well over an hour long within 2 hours of the 10+ hour auction. When I finally got to the front, I was told they couldn't ring me up because my item wasn't in the computer yet....1 1/2hours after bidding. Another 20 minutes spent waiting. Did they not anticipate people showing up? Why couldn't the woman transcribing put bids directly in the computer so there wasn't an excessive lag? It felt like a scam that people had to wait so long to get their deposit back. If you don't have the staff, don't do such a large auction with public draw. The auctioneers were really good though. A nice sense of humor and very clear. read more

They may have been in the business a long time, but that is no guarantee that they are professional, effective, or honest. Prior to a recent sale efforts to get through by phone, use on-line sign-up forms provided by the house, get phone and e-mail inquiries answered, and just to be treated with basic courtesy, proved fruitless. Photos posted on Liveauctioneers documenting the condition of an object offered significantly mis-represented it's actual condition, a fact subsequently confirmed by first hand examination. This lack of service and poor behavior may have been the way things worked at small auctions years ago - buyer beware - but in the new era of on-line bidding platforms it is not acceptable. Anyone considering a significant purchase from this auctioneer should be prepared for some frustration and ready to examine the item in person before they bid. read more

This is the first time I attended an auction at John McInnis Auction. As a dealer, I have attended many auctions in most states in the northeast. I was very impressed by this particular set-up. The quality of the merchandise they sold was excellent. The venue was clean and the sale items were set up for easy inspection. This auction was run very professionally and the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. I have seen a lot of questionable behavior from some auctioneers over the years and it's always a pleasure to do business with an honest and reputable auction house like this one. They even provide free food for their patrons. Who does that?! I will be looking forward to their next auction. read more

My husband and I have been trying to find someone to appraise a Lithograph and baseball cards that we own for months, and happen to stumble upon John McInnis. When I called the woman was very helpful and seemed genuinely excited to see what we had and said that John did appraise baseball cards too - so we went in about an hour later. To our dismay John McInnis was very dismissive when he saw what we had (mind you we were not asked much about the art or the baseball cards before coming in) and he barley even glanced at it saying, "This isn't worth much." Ok, well "worth much" to me and John are probably in two different galaxy, and I was not there to ask if it was worth "much" I was there to ask what number it was worth. You could tell that he felt as if we were wasting his time with our art and baseball cards - he opened up the box to the baseball cards (about 1,000) took one look and said to give them to a 5 year old. As far as he knows we could have had a few that he would have been interested in, but he told us after that he was not an appraiser of baseball cards as we were told on the phone. Before leaving, I asked him what dollar worth the lithograph would be because I have seen similar ones SELL for $250 through $500. He said "That is what they are asking for them, you should just put it online and let it go for $50." I am sorry, I know that we did not have a painting from the 1900's, but we are locals and would have liked to have a reputable dealer in the area. read more
