This was my first time and I was in awe. I found what I was looking for )Boston Legal season) DVD's, but alas my frugal soul would not allow me to purchase them. They were a bit on the pricy side for used DVD's. I did go and look for some travel books and was disappointed on the used book prices as well. I found some books at bargain prices but I didn't want them. I looked at the toys and games and other animated figurines (Game Of Thrones) and didn't see anything. Oh and if you go there with 3 friends, make sure you all have your phones on so you can round up everyone and leave in a timely fashion. Oh well, I did get the experience. read more

I am one of McKay's former employees. From back-in-the-day (in its second location on Lee Highway... now it's in its fourth location). Time was you could seriously find almost anything at McKay. I bought most of my CD collection there. I discovered all kinds of wonderful books, and I was genuinely inspired by the people I worked with and by people who shopped there regularly. The store was popular in those days, and I think they made pretty good money, but it was nothing like the machine it has become. I really don't like going anymore, which is a shame. That being said, I'm sure it still has something to offer for some folks. I recently went to a shop in Maryland called CDepot that reminded me a great deal of the old McKay. Had never been here but my sons girlfriend loves this place so we drove out to get a gift card for her birthday and wow! You want it? They've got it! And by the looks of their line and system to buying your old books, records, comics, instruments, games, etc. I'd guess they pay fair prices for your unused items! We spent an hour wandering and I feel we barely brushed the surface. Dvds were a fair price of 49 cents and up. Only reason I gave it 4 stars out of five is because there were a few books we looked at buying that were quite abused by use and age and priced rather high!? But then other stuff we looked at and was shocked at how cheap it was. Not sure how they figure pricing, but it wasn't by wear and tear. Had to laugh they had a "Seriously Scratched" cd section. Lots of vinyls for $1, lots of current music records too! Great place to wander, pretty much a section for everyone's interest. read more

I LOVE McKay's. Seriously. At one point I found a collection of old fashioned children's textbooks titled "Book of Knowledge" in the free book bin outside the door...about 15 of them. I picked them all up and did some research on them after being enchanted by the stories within and lessons on sewing and other practical skills, and came to find out they were from the earliest part of the 20th century and were easily worth $100-$200 each! So yes, come here, search around. Enjoy the wide selection of books, games and music, and make sure you check the free bin! It's often junk books, but once in a while you might just find a diamond in the rough. read more

This store is by far one of the best used book stores I've ever seen. The selection is vast; prepare to spend a couple of hours. They have freebie bins outside too, where I once found a beat up, early edition hard copy of "War and Peace". Tired of your 90's CD collection piling up? SELL 'EM! When I visited the location in Nashville, I wasn't really crazy about it but omg when I came to this one! Everything I'd been looking for and some new finds were great as well! I spent $300 and had a buggy full! To do that at a used book store just makes you feel good! I got complete DVD series I'd been looking for like Buffy and I compared everything I bought to prices on amazon before purchasing and this place beat em! A truly unique establishment. It's huge popularity becomes a problem because the parking lot fills up so quickly on weekends. The new location is a nice structure. But I hate to see some of the changes like their rejection of books older than 10 years of age. I do see the point with some non-fiction books, but I remember finding real gems from the 40's and earlier. It's a real loss in value and appeal. read more

Man, I wish they had one of these in LA. Whenever I'm visiting my friend in TN, my bags come back loaded with books because of McKays. The only problem is that their prices are all over the place. Some stuff is really, really cheap, while other things are more than retail. I spent a good hour looking through their CD section, and was shocked by a lot of the prices. My friend bought Radiohead's "Amnesiac" used for $10, and later that night we found it on Amazon new for a couple bucks. Even with shipping that's cheaper. But as long as you're willing to do some treasure hunting, and to keep your eye out for things that are too high, this place is the spot to buy and sell used books, games, and dvds (by what I saw, avoid the music) read more

This business has moved to a new location and it offers a lot more space for their items. This is great for used books, music, games, etc. but I sometimes find books that don't appear to be well-reviewed to the point of having pieces of what appeared to be a cracker in one book and a dirty cover that could have been wiped down before putting it out. These were just a couple of incidents so it's not everything that I've purchased there but it seems like the quality of used goods (or at least the review process) has suffered somehow of late. That being said, you'd be hard-pressed to find many places to pick up books at these prices. read more

The only negative thing about McKay's is it's a ripoff if you're trying to sell vinyl. I had a life's collection of the VERY BEST of vinyl of all genres of music--hundreds. I got tired of lugging the heavy things moving all the time and took them to McKay's for a little extra money and was told they do not buy vinyl, you GIVE it to them! THAT, to me, is a ripoff when they're selling at 100% profit off one's loss! Needless to say, I won't BUY any vinyl from McKay's, for there is another used vinyl/CD/cassette+ store much closer to home with extremely friendly locals who own it. Lost and Found Records even gave me a FREE very cool t-shirt, just out of friendliness!!! You have to BUY a McKay's! I used to go to McKay's almost religiously until I found Thriftbooks online. Much cheaper and rarely do they not have what I'm looking for, including very old books probably out of print. McKay's is a very cool place to spend an afternoon, with a lot of different items like Legos and games, etc. but after much shopping and comparing, there are more stores available to choose from. I got a gift card for Christmas, but no idea what to do with it now...well, also a little turntable, but I don't want to buy someone else's "loss" of their vinyl. Seems sad. Think I'll call and see if I can cash it in and go elsewhere...siiigh...Thanks, McKay's. This place has helped me get my nerd on for so many years. I was with them at the old location and gladly followed them to their newer location. They never fail to impress on selection of media and books. I usually take trades so I rarely wind up paying out of pocket which is Ah-May-Ziiiinnnn-gah! My only problem is having to get there in time to beat the crowds so that I don't literally have to beat the crowds for my favorite, cult classic or vintage video game. It can become very cramped and loud once the day really gets going. They have free bins where they throw their discards so on occasion I can even find a book or two that needs a forever home for FREE! How awesome is that!? You know, for over two decades I have really loved McKay's. I've bought and traded probably over a thousand dollars here in that time. I've never had a problem, until tonight, when I decided to trade in some of my personal collection of boxsets. Many of them were still in their original packaging, having been purchased and never watched. Some from stores like Hastings, that have been closed for years. I'm sure many of you can see where I'm going with this. Be aware that even if you are a loyal customer that frequently drives thirty or more miles to patronize their establishment over others and have traded enough things in their system that they should realize that you would never (and HAVE never) stolen a thing, that they would still LOVE to imply outright that you are a thief. Had they even bothered to even look at my ID or scan it through they system they would see that I've always gotten McKay's credit and put every dime (plus some) back into the store. Visibly upset, I asked to see a manager, who did absolutely nothing to help me, and in fact did not even apologize for the way I had been treated. McKay's is a great place to stock up on used books. I'm particularly impressed by the store's organizational system, with laminated pieces of paper hung on every shelf, detailing which genre belongs in which row. Upon my last visit, I scored six books for $18, including a hardback copy of Eats, Shoots & Leaves for $6, Wally Lamb's I Know This Much Is True for $2.50 and Pat Conroy's Beach Music for 75 cents! I was disappointed that the current selection of used fare didn't include popular memoirists like David Sedaris and Augusten Burroughs, or John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces (to replace my forever-lost copy). Plus, the poetry selection leans heavily toward classic wordsmiths, such as Tennyson, Whitman and Thomas, sadly lacking more current, accessible writers like Collins, Piercy or Doty. But perhaps that's just representative of the current pieces in-stock. I can't speak for the movie or music sections, but the book section always has something stimulating for a way-reasonable price. read more

McKay's is quite amazing. I have been to both this, the chattanooga location, as well as the Nashville location. Chattanooga is superior due mainly I think to having been in operation longer. It seems for the most part the McKay's team price their items just under what they can usually be found for online. There are exceptions to this but commonly the price you find something for in store is not going to be more expensive than somewhere else. I even found a book once for around $20 that when I checked online sold for $100! I miss the old store with the original layout, but McKay's is still the best place to go for used books. With the trade-in system, I rarely have to spend much money there, just take in old books I don't read anymore or newer things I've been given and don't want, and then go find whatever I want to replace them. You can find just about anything, but you have to have patience and learn where they put things (eg, some things may be in modern lit when you expect them to be in with the "classics", and vice versa, or they may be off in oversized fiction). The games, DVDs, and CDs tend to be overpriced (especially the DVD sets, considering they're used) but the books can be dirt cheap. The free bins outside are also usually worth a rummage through, and I've snagged several interesting items that way. read more

Been the huge fan of McCays for while. Their staff is never friendly but they usually have what I want and I'm usually pretty good at finding it myself. Recently I started buying broken or as is devices to fix a as a hobby. Today in particular I needed a part from an Xbox 360, a functioning disc drive. They're easy to test for. Just bump the eject button once. So I grabbed a broken console and a power cord and walked to the desk to see if the guy would plug it in for me. It should not have been a big deal. They let me test power adapters in the past. But instead of a simple no which would've been perfectly acceptable The dude decided to be an asshole. I understand people are busy and the console I wanted was technically broken. But come on, was it necessary to cut me off before I finish my sentence and then proceed to cut me off when I tried to clarify what I was looking for? Oh well. Maybe eBay will have one available. read more

Book and books, so many books! Amazing how many books this place has. I have never seen a place with such good deals, my daughter and I spent 20 dollars on ten books. He books are in great condition, I was able to get a few books that were practically brand new. This is a must stop if your driving by. read more

Some store somewhere must have the distinction of being the biggest place where I'll walk out empty-handed, and this one is unfortunately a candidate for that. It certainly has size going for it, and this review pertains only to the vinyl and CD sections (i.e. the periphery upstairs). At first glance there's a lot, but in looking through it you realize the used vinyl is heavily skewed toward 70s and early 80s mass-produced product where there's still a lot of supply, even though demand has caught up in a few cases (I remember back when record stores didn't want Queen records, for example). Unfortunately there's not a lot of real collectibles amid the tonnage. My theory on that (and I admit it to be just a theory, though based on a LOT of experience) is that they're not paying enough to be at the top of the pecking order. I've seen other stores, notably Josie's in Dallas and Kansas City, get the same results, i.e. LOTS of unremarkable 70s/80s vinyl but only a small percentage really high-demand or collectible. Further, the pricing for what they do have can get a bit carried away. A Boston "Don't Look Back" at $15.95 or a Stones "Tattoo You" for $17.95? Huh? Was it a promo or a rare variation? No, it was in excellent (used) shape, but durn. On the newly inaugurated Rusty's Record Store Scale, where 1 is a "museum" with prices even visiting Japanese and Chinese would balk at, and 10 is almost a thrift store where nothing good makes it past the "new arrivals", I would rate this store a 5. Much of the 5 comes from the fact that they do mark down quite a bit for records in VG- or lower condition or CDs with scratches that probably won't affect play, so I suspect there are lots of customers digging those sizable bins for items that are beaten up a bit, but tolerably so. There's even a "very scratched" record bin that has the closest thing to collectibles in G or worse shape, with lots of sub-$2 prices. Though the CDs are probably the best deal because a low level of scratches usually won't affect play and pricing can get to sub-$1. So the place is good for certain niches and Chattanoogans aren't spoilt for lots of other choices, so I'm sure many a rainy day has been spent on long digs through here. I can't rate it as a great place for collectors or seekers of unusual items that already have all the record-company releases from a certain artist, but for other types of customer it's not hard to see how it can be popular. read more

Fun place to wander around if you have spare time on your hands. They have a wide variety and selection of games, books, movies and music. It's awesome that you can bring in your old stuff from home for trade in or cash. You may not find the newest stuff here but it's makes you a little nostalgic browsing the electronics section and also reminds you that someone will want the junk you no longer need. This place is huge and it's unbelievable how neat and well organized it is. I've found some great gems in the book sections and the prices are absolutely amazing. Get in line for all of the BluRay, DVD, CD and LP afecianados headed to McKay. They are all there jostling for real estate among the gamers, instrumentalists and electronics buffs. I drop by McKay on a regular basis to add to my collection of camera equipment and gently used hard cover books. I have an eye on a guitar there too. Do you want to find storage space that you never knew you possessed? Box it up and bring it in to McKay. You won't get rich, but you will get around 35% of what you bought it for originally in cash. Do you want a bit more value? You can opt for up to 45% in an in-house trade certificate. I'm pretty sure that I have never selected the cash option. Typically I get in there soon after opening when it is not as crowded. That also gives me a first glance at newer merchandise. My first time here and was TOTALLY disappointed. Brought 5 full totes with many great titles and hard back books. They gave me 2-1/2 totes back that they would not take. I got $26.00 cash plus $10.00 store credit. Appears from their pricing on the shelf, they give you very little for your books and sell them for a LOT! $4.50 cheapest paperback I saw. What a rip off. Put them in a yard sale or give to a charity. Much better deal. I will not be back. read more

Used books, CD, audiobooks, video games, etc. It doesn't get any better than McKays. They will buy (most) of your used books and give you either cash or credit. Credit is always more and used quite quickly by my family. Walking in looks a bit like pandimonium, but there is a method to the madness. The aisles are well marked, the shelves are normally neat and the books are of good quality. The books are used, so you never know what you'regoing to find. The cons are the parking lot is up a steep hill with a killer speed bump and is often crowded (attributing to the popularity of this place); also, the staff cannot tell you if they have a specific item in stock (bad, but it encourages browsing and I find things). read more
