And that's one of the attractions of Linfield, small class sizes and a tight-knit student body. It's a beautiful liberal arts college that has a wonderful education program, but I'm a little nervous it might be too much like high school. Bu the location is prime. At the Mark O.Hatfield Library main desk, staff will issue to area residents a "community borrower's card" for a yearly fee of $50. To access the campus, I always park in the visitors' lot on the east side of Winter St., close to the intersection with Pringle Parkway. The signage is confusing: parking is free for casual drop-ins only on weekends. For those from away, walk NE from the visitors' parking until you see the fountain. There is found an excellent map and you can orient yourself. The Martha Springer Botanical Garden is a few minutes' walk from the library and worth a visit. It does not show on the online map. It is the green strip north of the Sparks Center, on the south bank of the Mill Race.

Our son started at Salem Academy in 5th grade, and this school has changed his life in ways we never could have imagined. Unlike public schools, Salem Academy looks at the whole child--focusing not just on academics, but also on character and personal growth. It's a safe, encouraging place where kids can learn, grow, and become who they were meant to be, surrounded by positive role models and supportive peers. Even the snack bar was stocked and ran efficiently. The heat in the building was brutal - but, I would have expected nothing less at an aquatic center with two heated pools, a hot tub, and hundreds of bodies. We sat on the balcony and accommodations were cramped...but the saving grace was that a number of the windows on the second floor opened to allow a draft and keep us from melting. The swim meet continues tomorrow, so we will be back with stadium seat cushions and shorts.

I love how they post pictures and videos of the activities the kids do throughout the day. The kids do a lot of creative play and there is a fun outside play area. They provide healthy meals and snacks every day, and accommodate for dietary restrictions or allergies. Compared to other similar pre-school options Happy Face Preschool is very affordable.
