I like to highlight the independent ones because I feel like they are doing a great thing, trying to battle down the chain stores and do their thing to improve the economy. If you need to get something from a newsagent, why not use the independent ones? They deserve your service for taking the risk and standing alone. This one is conveniently located a few streets away from Central Station.

I always enjoy a newsagent more when they have a small selection of groceries as it can save you a trip further afield and this place does just that. You can pop in here grab a paper and some general household goods and head home having avoided the hassle of a trip to Asda ect. The service here is good and it epitomises the idea of a friendly neighbourhood shop keeper and this is a breath of fresh air in an area which can at times be quite unfriendly. The value here is not bad either meaning that a trip will not leave you out of pocket by any stretch of the imagination. On the whole this place is friendly, convenient and good value which is everything you need to create a good local newsagent.

Another point that I would like to make in favour of this one is that there is a cash machine inside! Instead, Carty's News is your basic newsagent that offers a large selection of newspapers and magazines for your perusal, ensuring most publications are stocked here. They also sell the usual array of drinks and confectionary at competitive (if expensive) prices as well as stationary and 'pet goods', though those last two are in no way related to one another, thankfully. All in all, Carty's News is a pleasant enough newsagent that offers you everything you'd want in a newsagent without being too mind-blowing (but then again, what newsagents is?)

They also have a small range of books and cards but this is quite limited compared to the larger stores. The soft drinks are quite expensive compared to other nearby stores as are the sandwiches. It seems that they feel they can charge more due to the store being so convenient for people travelling from the station. The store is always busy and can sometimes have big queues as there are only 2 tills. The staff work hard to get customers served quickly and are friendly and helpful. This is a good place to pop in before you get a train.

The couple who own this are Julie and her husband Lez and they are very friendly indeed always asking about the health of their customers and will accommodate you with any queries, small shops like this are hard to find these days. i will give this shop ten out of ten.

Downstairs they have books and magazines although the range is not as big as their other store on Church Street. The staff will order a book for you if they do not have it in stock. Upstairs they have a good range of stationary for school, college, university and just general use. They have branded ranges such as Hello Kitty, and their own budget range of stationary. There is also a Post Office branch on this floor which is now the only branch in the city centre, the nearest branch being in the business district. It is only small but has lots of cashier desks which are all open when it is busy. This is a small but perfectly formed store which is excellent.

I have always been a shopper of WHSmith and I always will be despite the fact that I think it was more conveniently located back in 2008 on Church Street (now where River Island is). Its current location serves two small floors with the Post Office a trek upstairs in the same building. Most of the time I need to visit Smith's or the Post Office for some reason or another whether it's to use their photo-me vendor or to buy stamps. Personally, I feel this is a terrible move for WHSmith and the Post Office as both have decreased in space and situated further away from the main walkways. They have attempted to "kill two birds with one stone" but for me, this has backfired. Their new format has certainly taken time to get used to.

They offer neswpaper delivery to the local area and are more than happy to organise a to put away a specific magazine for you and order it specially if it is not something they usually have in stock. The staff are very friendly and help give the shop a community feel. They are always happy to help and greet you with a smile. This is a great little shop.

This reasonably sized newsagent offers a very good selection of sweets and drinks (we're talking a wide range of confectionery here, not just a few Snickers and Chomps) all at prices that are no worse than elsewhere (sweets aren't cheap anywhere these days). K & C Douglas also offers a very good selection of magazines in their shop, providing the usual glossies for the ladies as well as more specialist publications for those of you with more unusual hobbies and interests (Angling Weekly? Powerslam Wresting Magazine? Come on down).
