I had another gem that I wanted reset/remade into a different ring, so I decided to give Cunningham a try. First impression when you walk in is that the place is small and very clean. I wasn't looking to buy anything from the case, and I can't comment on their stock. I was greeted by Brian Cunningham, and I explained what I wanted and showed him pictures of my inspiration. Basically the task was to take a crappy yet sentimental ruby out of a ring from Plumb Gold and set it in a more simple, modern band. Brian - super helpfully - looked at the pictures, said he could save me money by melting the gold from the ring down himself, fashion a band with a new bezel, and reset the stone. Um, WHAT?! I was blown away. At "Flennons" when I asked for and described and showed pictures of the ring I would like to have, the salesperson plopped down a huge catalogue of settings, went through it, and gave me the closest approximation. Essentially not custom at all, that took two full weeks, with a $700 cost to boot. $700 for being somewhat satisfied is kind of bullsh*t. Brian fabricated something brand new, that was EXACTLY what I wanted, that took maybe five days and cost $125. I will never shop at another jewelry store again.

Her attention is on you, and she gives you the best, honest options. I left her store the first time with a beautiful vintage ring. I returned with an heirloom (my M-I-L's wedding band, which had been cut off her finger in the hospital). I asked Jess for custom solution for the ring that could become an heirloom in our family. This is the place to buy the famous Herkimer diamonds - both raw or cut and set. Herkimer diamonds are actually double terminated quartz crystals. Smaller specimens are clear and perfect. Larger specimens contain defects. They own the mines and also offer collecting expeditions which are a couple miles away. . The shops are across from the exit. There is plenty of parking with some special accessible. There are clean restrooms. The staff is friendly and excited to discuss the inventory in the gem shop. There were 4 cases of Herkimer cut and uncut stones. The selection included rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. The had specimens of druzy Herkimer quartz as well. Jewelry prices were reasonable so I brought two bracelets set in sterling. Stones are not cut locally. They also sell other imported stones and specimens. We picked up rock candy and post cards too. They offer boat tours of the Erie Canal section. The dock along the canal is lovely. There is a restaurant that we did not try. Next time.
