We visited MCRD for a graduation. It was a lovely experience from beginning to end. It is located in a nice town, clean and bustling with lots of places to eat. MCRD itself sits alone. To get to it we drive on a road surrounded with lake/marsh. We were not given a difficult time to get in. They made the process seamless as they checked our cars. The places to park were not hard to find. The graduation ceremony was all the pomp and circumstance but also moving. There was a nice gathering of food trucks for everyone to enjoy and there is a Starbucks for us coffee lovers. Nice place. read more

Was lucky enough to be apart of the first in person graduation class since COVID-19. It was my first time on Paris Island, and was amazed how beautiful it was. All the Palm trees and Spanish moss makes a lovely back drop for the 13 weeks of pain the recruits go through..lol There was something so surreal about getting to see my daughter fresh out of bootcamp, and getting to hear about everything that she went through on the island. Already so many memories that she will take with her through the rest of her life. The bond that she has unknowingly gained with all marines that have gone through PI, and just the proud look on her face as she stood in front of my wife and I. All of this made possible by her time on Parris Island. I think that knowing what you're going to be facing, and still choosing to enlist says a lot about you. Everyone has their own reasons, but it doesn't make the journey any less easier. I'm very proud to be the father of a new marine, and I wish all future recruits the best of luck! read more

I came here to watch my son's graduation. What an amazing place. Yeah, I get it's a rather unpleasant 13 weeks, but the reward far outweighs the negative. My son stood about 2 inches taller, had a dramatic increase in his confidence, and became the man I knew he could be. The facility is what you'd expect. It's clean and well maintained. There is no messing around. Everyone is super nice from the recruits to the civilian employees to the officers. It's also super hot and humid in July! Whew! This is the place to be if you want to join the finest fighting force on the planet. 13 weeks of misery for a lifetime of brotherhood (and sisterhood) and pride. read more

Not much has changed other than 3rd battalion having a new spot and squad bay (the old squad bay has been demolished where I stayed). This place is BS. I came here just after graduating high school. I came here because I was shown a cool video by some guy in a uniform, and in that video there were a bunch of other people in uniforms driving Mustangs. They asked if I was interested, and I thought they meant if I was interested in driving a Mustang - so I said yes. Fast forward a few months, and I get a plane ticket to South Carolina and a bus trip - so far, so good. A free trip to the South and I'm getting a Mustang. That's when things just went haywire. So we pull up to Parris Island, which by the way is not what I had in mind when they said South Carolina; I was thinking like Myrtle Beach, and Parris Island is not Myrtle Beach; I digress-so we pull up in a bus and this gets onboard and starts yelling at me to get off. I was like, chill man I just came here to get that Mustang. So I get off the bus and they take me into the building, where I figure is where the processing to get the Mustang takes place. So I get in there and they take everything from me, and then proceed to shave off my hair. I'm starting to think at this point that I might not have understood what the guy in the uniform was telling me when he asked if I was interested. Things then get real weird. I get put in this hotel, which they kept saying was a company. I tried to tell the gentlemen that I've never heard of Hotel Company; they did not like that. After a few days in the hotel with other men that seemed to have been tricked into thinking they were getting a car, I finally went to the gentlemen and said I was ready to go home. Let's just say they weren't too happy with me. It took over three months to go home. Some observations about Parris Island: I think others should know: (1) The men running the Hotel are really angry. They were yelling all the time. I tried to tell them it was because they kept waking up early everyday, and if they'd sleep in they wouldn't be so angry. (2) The food is really good; they just don't allow us much time to eat. I think they need to slow things down. (3) I know some resorts provide exercise options. This place goes way overboard. I felt like we were constantly running while I was there. I ended up losing 35 lbs, so it is a really good weight loss program for those interested. (4) Not sure what's up with all the guns at this place. I mean, they made me sleep with one for like three months. (5) They should really tell people they can't leave for three months when they check in. I had other plans I had to miss because I could get out of there. (6) Did I mention the food; best carrot cake ever (7) For some reason they don't call you by your first name and call you a recruit the whole. I tried to tell them my name but they didn't listen. (8) Bunks beds; what, am I like 5 years old or something (9) They have a great pool; however, once again, they yell at you all the time and make you swim with a helmet and full clothes. Haven't been at this "Blue Collar Budget Resort" specializing in healthy walks & fun runs since 1989. The vertical sunbathing on the very level asphalt parade deck is a lovely experience full of loud 4x4 tempo'd music sung by energetic guides who will allow you to do extra exercise if you misstep from the group. The "speed eating experience" is not worthy of a James Beard Award, but it will allow you to experience many meals without the chitter chatter of other diners. The "hostel" sleeping experience is made more comforting by the guard watching over your overnight slumber. It's a immersive atmosphere allowing you the slumberer to participate as a guard in a rotating list. Just like Summer Camp (pre 1990) you can shoot a rifle on a real rifle range. Everyone gets a medal as a award. Those who don't shoot well get razed with a pizza box shaped award all in good fun. All in all I can suggest the experience for both men & women ages 18-23. Older participants might be annoyed by the extra activities. The all inclusive community provides you with everything needed & will send you back home with a glow & pride for a lifetime. This island resort is incredible! I was given an all expense paid trip out where I was greeted as I got off the bus. We were immediately shown around and they let us call home to tell our loved ones we were safe. We then were given a tour of the place and handed new clothes for our stay! The food here isn't amazing, but you'll be so hungry from all the activities that you won't even mind. The staff can be a bit shouty at times but overall they're there to help. We were taken on nature walks, guided exercise, got to shoot guns, do obstacle courses, swim, and a whole lot more. Honestly, it's a 10/10 year round camp! read more

Late post; Yelp wasn't a thing when I visited in 1997. Great atmosphere, food is fantastic, and there is plenty of physical activity. I stayed with India Company, 3rd RTB, known for their Spirit and Discipline. Also known for such hits as "no one can hear you scream" and "fun times with footlockers". Facility came with a large parade deck out back; when necessary, we were able to make one inside as well. It all worked out; after 20 years in the Marine Corps I retired in 2017. Great place to spend your summer. Tons of fun activities and plenty of sun. You can find fresh sugar cookies at any given time all over the base. Life long friendships and bonds of brotherhood are made here. After spending a couple of months here, you'll wonder why you ever spent a couple of months here. Great views of Hilton Head Island from the "Get Down" activity area. The staff at some points can be a little rude and the establishment has a small mosquito and flea problem. Enjoy. read more

I stopped by here because I was lost and some drill instructor screamed at me to get out my car and stand on on some silly yellow footprints. He belittled me and told me to scream "aye sir" to him as if he was in some type of command. I peed on myself a little after he forced drank me a canteen full of water to hydrate because apparently him and I were going on a date to some quarter deck of his after chow... whatever that means and I already ate! Arriving at night to this island after a long time traveling makes you a bit groggy, so when you arrive you feel like you are running back and forth, despite remembering the fact that you didn't bring any luggage. Better call home and tell them I made it, on second thought, better just leave a message. It was such a blur getting to my room, it felt like I was up for days, just waiting in lines. I had only intended on being their for a week, but they gave me clothes and let me stay longer! Meals, exercise routines, and classroom training were all included! They even dressed me up and took my picture to show how awesome this place is! I highly recommend a visit! read more

This base not only trains the elite for our US Marine Corps, but it is positively beautiful. The marsh and water views, the palm trees, the marsh, and even the homes and buildings reminds you of the beauty of the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Be sure and have a valid photo ID upon your arrival at the front gate. The public can gain access to the museum, the seven day store and gas station and the library. Brought my husband back for a little reminiscing. Bottom line, Marines are Made Here, there is nothing but pride and hard work oozing through the base. They have a good PX and all the rest if the makings of a MC base. Base housing looks nice I the outside, looks like they have been updating the housing units which is nice by all bases need that badly. The Exchange at Parris Island is not a place to go shopping for clothes. You can not try on bathing suits bottoms they do not have the protector liners so they expect you to buy it without trying it on oh ye no return because at home you tried it on and a bad fit to to bad so NO clothes shopping read more

This is the absolute worst establishment I have ever visited. The staff here were very rude, belittling, and angry. There was, however, many activities offered such as a rifle range, museum, a swimming pool. The accommodations are all inclusive with food, housing, and showers all being free. They would not let my family attend the depot until my last two days there, so they missed out on most of the recreations. I will NOT be recommending a friend any time soon. read more

Upon passing through the entrance of the base, the guards checking our I.D.s, on the 16th of October, 2015 to witness my best friend graduate from basic, the first thing that struck me was the landscape. The base is outlined by swampy looking marshes full of wildlife, which made all added to the amazing sunrise right over the bay. Once we drove about a mile through roundabouts and following the signs directing us to the stadium, we ended up under the big sign reading "We Make Marines," with the banners marking the 100th anniversary of when the base began training fresh recruits. Thousands and thousands of proud parents, siblings, significant others, and friends were buzzing about the base, all wearing their red to show support of Charlie Company. After waiting in line for quite a while, we were quick to find seats within the bleachers. At this point it was about 7:30-8 AM, and the ceremony didn't start until 9. So me and two of my buddies who made the trek with me from VA began conversing with the families of other soon-to-be graduates, and man was there a lot of emotion. I'm not sure if I've ever seen so many parents so proud of their kids, each group around us was telling us all of these stories and it was truly amazing. The Marine band made their way onto the grounds, and it was mesmerizing to watch them all move as one, every single step matched by each and every one of them. It was sort of like watching a grandfather clock's pendulum swinging back and forth, except for that there were about 50 of them. With it being the 100th anniversary of Parris Island, the Commandant made a special appearance, a long speech, and a congratulations to Charlie and Oscar (the women) companies. The entire crowd was drawn by his presence, and we all sat quietly, listening as he addressed his officers. It was truly an amazing experience to get to witness this ceremony, especially such a notable one, and perhaps one day it will be my buddies coming to watch me march across the parade deck. read more
