The main street of Bendigo is filled with trendy and expensive cafes but step a couple of streets back off the tourist strip and you find where the real people eat. We didn't have much time and wanted something quick so a pie was the natural (if not the healthy) option. The pies here are made on premises and way better then the soggy rat coffins you get at the servo. The kids hooked into some good pies here. The missus and I opted for a chicken roll (they do sandwiches as well as pies ) instead as we had eaten about a years quota of pies over the course of the previous few days (including for breakfast that day... Don't judge). The roll was fresh, tasty, not soggy and filling. Just the thing to munch on as we barrelled down the highway to our next stop. A good, reasonably priced option for a quick Bendigo lunch.

The interior is very modern and funky with a nice, welcoming feeling. As it's a cold day I ordered the waffles and a cap. The cappuccino is delicious with a lot of attention to the detail. The waffles are home made and reasonably priced, not many places do their own waffles but these ones were lightly crisp and moist, great with strawberries and ice cream. This place is great, especially for ex Melbournites like me, so give them a try :)

The girl behind the counter handled cash with her bare hands while serving the customer before me. When I ordered a cold pie to take home, she took it from the fridge with those same hands and then proceeded to cough into them. I threw the pie away when I got home as I wasn't keen on catching whatever she had. Disappointing.

It was delicious, fresh and the shop was very clean. The menu is interesting and all the food sounded so yummy, it was very hard to choose just one meal. I've had to do the detour drive through Kyneton on the way to work a couple of times in search for an early morning coffee after fogetting to buy milk over the weekend. The French inspired cafe deli is located in the Kyneton CBD and has plenty to offer - aside from really good coffee. Delicious meats and cheeses will surely catch your eye. Or pehaps they could tempt you with ther ready-made meals like lasagne or shepherd's pie? I'm personally a fan of their delicious little pastries - both sweet and savoury - and I think it's safe to say they do the best ham and cheese croissant I have ever had, EVER!

They serve delicious hot chocolates (and babycinos), and really yummy sweet cakes, slices, tarts etc. I was also very impressed when they replaced my hot chocolate for free after my 3 year old son bumped it and spilt it all over me! On the counter near where you pay they also have an assortment of wrapped chocolates and stuff too. There are tables outside and lots of space for you to sit there with your dogs, kids or both! All in all, a nice place and I will return next time Im in Kyneton.

Day one of the family road trip. We have just driven 900k from Sydney. We are exhausted. It's late…read more We are hungry. We are crumpled. We smell a bit. We look at the swanky cafes on the main street of Bendigo and realise that we would have to go back to our accommodation to clean up a bit (well a lot really) before walking in. This would make it later and us hungrier. So we wandered around for a while looking for something a little less highbrow. Not knowing Bendigo, we stuck to the main drag. The only place that suited was Grilld. Now 900k is a very long way to go to get a burger that you can buy from the same chain in Sydney but hunger trumped originality and in we went. Although I say we have bought the same burger from Grilld in Sydney, we never have, so this was our first Grilld experience. And it was a good one. For a fast food chain burger it was good. We all had something diferent and they were all good, big and tasty. Just th thing after a long drive. We lashed out and had their chip tasting plate as well with 3 diferent types of hot chip - regular, sweet potato (yum) and zucchini (wow... Amazing) with dipping sauces. We may well be giving their Sydney locations a go if we need a lunch or dinner out sometime and don't want to go upmarket.
