Don was absolutely AWESOME! Ive been struggling to find a good hair salon in flagstaff for a long time! Before I had gone to see don I had gotten my hair done somewhere else, I wanted a white/blonde color and I ended up with yellow/orange hair on the top, it was awful and I was freaking out! I asked the lady who did my hair if there was anything we could do at all and she said unless I wanted to dye my hair dark there was nothing we could do.The next day I spent hours looking up ways to get yellow to of blonde hair, I tried everything but I had no luck, so I started calling salons around town looking for a color correcting shampoo. When I called dons hair salon I asked if he had gem lights shampoo, at this point I was in a little bit of panic! Unfortunately he didn't have the shampoo but he asked what I needed the it for and I explained what had happened I started crying a little bit(there is nothing worse than spending hundreds of dollars and leaving a hair salon with hair so terrible you don't even want to go outside). He immediately explained to me that he could fix my hair with a simple toner!(I was relieved and a little frustrated that the other salon hadn't done this.) He said he had just left his salon was done for the weekend but he could schedule me for next week, he noticed I was crying a little bit and he said he would come back to the salon and fix my hair right away. Within an hour my hair was no longer yellow! he dropped everything he was doing, rushed to the salon and got almost all of the yellow out of my hair! I scheduled another appointment with him later that week to rebleach my hair so I could get that white color. My hair looked so much better! and he didn't damage it at all and my scalp didn't burn like it had when I left the other salon! he was absolutely great! I have finally found a hair salon in flagstaff that I can trust! I highly recommend don, he really knows what he is doing and he really cares. When I called he easily could have scheduled me for an appointment the next week, but he dropped everything, and took the rest of his day off to fix my hair. I love this salon! I'm in from out of town, so I called in to see if I could get a cut/color/style. The stylist that answered the phone, Don, advised he'd get me a stylist that would accommodate me after 5pm, which, is unheard of. From the very 1st phone call, awesome customer service, plus after hours?! Really?!! Amazing. Within 5 minutes, I received a phone call Cassandra, who kindly set up the last minute after hours appointment with me!! I showed up an hour early, since I don't know the area. Don was working on a woman's hair, warmly greeted me, and included me in their conversation, making me feel right at home! While waiting for my stylist, I watched Don cut this woman's hair to perfection. Such attention to the little details! After his appointment concluded, and prior to my stylist coming in, he walked me through his professional opinion on a fabulous color! How awesome!! My stylist arrived, (early too!). They commiserated over the color, (seriously, come in here with an open mind, and remember, they do this for a living! Ask for thier professional opinion!). After I'm seated, Don offers me an amazing glass if wine! I'm being so pampered! Cassandra and Don both worked late for me which means the world! I'm a single mom of a 4 year old, and haven't spent time on myself since her birth! Being out if town gave me that opportunity, and I couldn't be happier with the results!!! I moved to Flagstaff from Europe and almost gave up finding a great hair stylist in this small town. Tried other downtown establishments and was thoroughly unimpressed. So when a friend recommended Don at McSweeney's I didn't get my hopes up but thought I'd give the place a shot. My hair tends to be wavy and unruly and I have to say that nobody, on any continent, cut my hair into a bob like Don did. "It'll be cute but it'll take a while," said Don and proceeded to work on my hair for over an hour. He was meticulous as a stylist and entertaining as a person. I felt like I was sitting at a funky hair salon downtown San Francisco (used to live there back in the day). I came back for my second cut just recently and was just as impressed. My hair has a style to it even after I wash and condition it and go straight to bed without blow drying it or using any styling products whatsoever. If Don is not a pro at his trade then I don't know who is. Five stars. I'll be back, Don! read more

If you're looking to get a haircut by a RACIST then you found the right place! Don is a child who refuses to take responsibility for his actions. He makes excuses for the racist "go back to the rez and steal" comments by saying it was someone else and "you don't know us." Well Don, you and your salon aren't worth knowing or supporting. If you don't monitor your business accounts then you're equally to blame. Most of your replies to reviews are horribly unprofessional. You threaten to call the police over an honest review- you are a CHILD. No one is surprised by your racist behavior when you're been treating customers poorly for a long while now. Don has been doing my hair for four years, not only do I totally and completely trust him to do an amazing job with my hair, he is very personable and makes sitting in the chair for a few hours getting bleached go by so quickly. I am honestly shocked reading negative reviews of this salon, people must be asking for unrealistic bleaches or color changes that's aren't chemically possible? Or the reviews must me fake? I home bleached and dyed my hair pink for a festival and really really messed it up and it took Don one visit to fix the tone and another to get me back to a blonde I love! My husband and I came to flagstaff to escape the heat in Phoenix and I needed to find someone to do my hair. I have been going to the same stylist in Scottsdale for almost 30 years and was very scared to stray.... I found Nedia at this salon and she did an AMAZING job!!!! She matched my color perfectly and trimmed my long hair beautifully! I also go to a dry bar in Scottsdale twice a week for blow outs and was really missing that luxury... I have tried numerous salons in Flagstaff before finding Nedia and none of them could even come close to how beautifully she blows out my hair, it's literally perfect every time!!!! Balayage was something new to me when I first went to Don a little over a year ago now. I was nervous as I have very thick, long hair that takes a looong time to color and in the past some stylists have been daunted, leaving me with not so great results. Don told me it would take a while to get the brassy colors out and not to get despondent... sure enough each time it's gotten better and now I love my color!! More recently Nidia does a blowout for me after my color and so I leave feeling like I've had the whole treatment. The salon is always clean, cool and has relaxing music playing. Don is very upbeat and doesn't mind me working on my laptop whilst he works on my hair! read more

Moved to Flag 3 years ago from DC metro area. Was nervous about finding a new salon after 14 years at a great salon. Following the advice of my DC stylist, I looked for someone with good training credentials and ended up with Don McKenzie at McSweeney Salon. No regrets! Don is really terrific with the scissors. Perhaps the best I've known. He's great with color and even does perms (a rarity these days). Perms are perfectly rolled, with rods close together. Don does not suffer fools gladly and has probably ticked some people off from time to time. But I recommend him without reservation as an excellent and reliable stylist. He's a real find. read more

I just went in to see Holly today and am so thrilled with my hair! I usually always get foil highlights, but have been curious about balayage for a while now. I consulted with Holly about it , and she decided that baby lights and a bit of balayage could be a great combo for me, and it turned out to be EXACTLY what I wanted! I wanted a slightly more lived in look , but with the brightness of blonde around my face and dimension throughout, and that is precisely what she delivered! The experience at McSweeney's is truly a superior one. Both Don and Holly are undoubtedly talented and incredibly friendly, and they take the extra time and care to make sure you walk out that door feeling your best. The first time I visited the salon, Don cut my hair and he did an amazing job; completely exceeding my expectations. Then I came in for a balayage & foil treatment from Holly and she absolutely blew me away. Perfectly satisfied customer and mom! My 7-year old has wanted a Spiderwoman haircut for over a year and Don did a better than perfect job! Everything was clean, he was receptive to feedback and was a master of scissors and art the whole time. He wore a mask the whole time and invited us back for more hair magic. My 12-year old is high-functioning ASD and she was too nervous to get her hair cut, and he was patient and explained everything perfectly to her. He even offered me a new type of hair cut/style that I will 100% be getting there with Don the next time I go up to Flagstaff! read more

I cannot express who much I love this salon. My first visit there and I was blown away! I have sooo much thick hair and Don had spent 4 hours carefully bleaching, toning and coloring every section by section. My hair came out amazing! I cannot believe the transformation. Don is such a hilarious person and so much fun to talk with! He even provides you with a drink of your choice! The whole vibe & location & experience was beyond what I was expecting. I have been coming to see Don for almost a year now, and he continually does and incredible job with anything you task him with. He and his staff are extremely kind, and they always make you feel right at home! I am extremely detail oriented when it comes to my hair, and I won't be letting anyone else touch it for as long as I'm in Flagstaff. He even cuts my boyfriend's hair now too! I'm new to Flagstaff so was horrified at the thought of finding a new salon. The first salon I tried did a horrible job so when I found McSweeney The Salon I was elated. Don has been cutting and coloring my hair for the last 6 month or so and I couldn't be happier. The salon itself is clean, organized and has a great selection of Bumble and Bumble product. Nidia did an absolutely amazing job on my hair. She listened to my wants/needs and did an incredible job executing what I was asking for. My hair is very fine and can be over processed easily but she new exactly what she was doing. She gave me advice and tips, was very welcoming and friendly.
