What my uncle experienced there during the final days of his life has left our family devastated, traumatized, and carrying pain we will never fully forget. Most of our family lived out of state while my uncle lived in Ohio with his longtime girlfriend, which made it difficult for family members to be physically present every day. We trusted that he would be treated with compassion, dignity, and humanity while under professional care. Instead, my uncle repeatedly called family members begging for help and describing how he felt ignored for hours when using his call light. He told us staff would sometimes speak negatively about him in the hallways where he could still hear them. Over time, he became emotionally defeated and hopeless. One of the hardest things our family has ever witnessed was seeing a staff member angrily yelling at him and aggressively throwing items around his room while he lay weak, frightened, and unable to defend himself in bed. This is not rumor or hearsay. Because of growing concerns, our family installed a camera in his room, and portions of this behavior were captured on video. No human being should spend their final days living in fear while completely dependent on others for care. Watching a once strong man slowly lose hope and say things like:"Why do I want to keep living if this is what I have to look forward to every day?"is something that will haunt our family forever. My uncle was not just another patient in a room. He was a proud union tradesman, one of the first Black sheet metal workers in Alaska, a mentor, a teacher, and a man who spent his life helping others. In the end, all he needed was dignity, compassion, responsiveness, and humanity. Instead, our family often felt we had to constantly fight just to make sure he was acknowledged, cleaned, comforted, and treated with basic respect. Before we could get medical approval to move him somewhere else, my uncle passed away. We understand healthcare workers are under stress and that not every employee is the same. But no family should ever have to wonder whether their loved one is suffering emotionally and mentally while under professional care. Please, if you place someone you love here:visit constantly,advocate relentlessly,ask questions,document everything,and never assume your loved one is being treated with compassion simply because they are in a facility. We would never want another family to experience the heartbreak ours now carries.

We all became like family. The care they gave my mom was very good. The compassion they gave my mom and family was humbling. My elderly dad went here for three weeks after a brain bleed and the hall nurses would let him sit…read morefor ten-fifteen minutes before they answered his buzzer and let him sit in his urine soaked clothes until he got a UTI, he is epileptic so a UTI is very dangerous. When they released him a horrible white nurse named Brittani (who I complained about previously and they still let tens to my dad) mentioned under her breath he didn't take a one of his meds (didn't tell me which one, just pointed to his pamphlet)... failed to mention it was his most important seizure medication .. they allowed him to not take it fryer a brain injury because he "didn't like the taste". He had a seizure that night and almost died after two months of ICU and inpatient rehab almost all thrown way because of one of the incompetent nurses who very clearly hates her job and hates where she works. I would not send my worst enemy here.

I can't speak for there for care of the elderly. They likely do a great job but as for community…read morerelations they have been very negligent. Their construction rubble and some scattered trash by their dumpster has been pushed up against my back yard chain link fence and Fairmont High School's fence for over a year, a real eyesore! After many calls, there were promises to clean it up and landscape time and time again and still little to no action. I had to resort to installing a wooden fence to block out the view! Pain medications are routinely NOT prescribed, because he doesn't believe in pain that needs more than a 500mg acetaminophen. Labs are delayed, even when it's potentially life- altering. Hospital visits don't happen because he doesn't get paid if the patient isn't under his immediate care. He let my parent die by ignoring a serious infection and not sending them to the hospital, then lied and said it got to bad too quick for him to do anything but recommend hospice. He never spoke to the family, barely saw the patient, and we had to get all our information from the nurses. Dr Robert Hunter - Are you that cruel, or just that incompetent? I only saw one person who had an attitude which was a girl that worked as an aide. With staff being shorthanded I can understand being behind schedule but I was really pissed off at being told they would be right back and.they disappear never to be seen again. Also, the food sux! My mother was in rehab at this "facility." Based on being there 10+ hours a day for approx. 3…read moreweeks this is what we found. First day: Admissions process seemed appropriate. Detailed questions asked and answered. Went over incoming lab numbers (normal ranges), medications she was discharged from hospital with, orders that were to be followed, dietary restrictions & personal needs/assistance requirements. From that point forward for the bells and whistles that were pointed out and sold by Becky Baker ($$Director of Admissions $ Marketing$$). This "facility" prides itself on being a multi million $,$$$,$$$ facility with SO much to offer. It was some of the worst care that I've encountered and witnessed in a long time. I thought I had asked all the appropriate questions...done my homework AND networked to think I was making the best decision for my mother. As she is valued and loved beyond. After signing on...the real ratio for patients for 16 beds were 2 aides (after 3p.m. it went down to 1 aide) & usually 1 Nurse (never got a clear answer on whether they were LPN or RN's)...Short staffed all the way around...DON (Director of Nursing for the Rehab) was always UNavailable...or not in...covering shifts due to staffing problems. My mother was left wet and UNattended for hours ...she lost weight...diet restrictions were a joke as Heart Healthy & Sodium Restricted diet was not being followed...serving high fat & salt content foods. Labs became out of wack (non diabetic with normal glucose levels pre admission to Friends Care were steadily dropping lower each week) with no real concern from staff or Dr...she had a mysterious rash appear that I advocated hard on. (Excuses for rash were: *laundry products* since I was doing her laundry...*anxiousness*...*heat rash*...I discussed meds from the very beginning BUT that was negated until a week later and seeing my mother itching and digging (as benedryl & hydrocortisone cream were not having ANY effect at all). I kept trying to discuss this with the Dr. as the rash resembled a systemic medicine rash...finally given the option of taking my mother off of a supporting med it ended up being another med. The only way I know this is from POST discharge from Friends Care I found out through blood work I had ordered that it was from being OVER therapeutic on levels of this suspected medicine that can be not only TOXIC BUT FATAL. These levels were never checked at Friends Care even after I asked IF this could be checked. I learned through a worker that Dr. Katz stated "the facility would not get reimbursed"...I asked for that reply to be put in writing as it was denied and I was offered for my mother to be converted from Rehab to Assisted Living so they could have another week figuring things out. I found that situation to be extremely interesting that Friends Care/Dr. Katz had ample time to address my valid concerns on my mother's behalf. AND to be quite frank my mother did NOT deserve the lack of care/treatment she had already received from this "facility." I was NOT going to leave my mother there one day longer. Forget trying to open a diplomatic dialogue with the staff...DON and Dr. Katz about concerns as they were met with defensive posturing AND attitude. The last two days of my mother's stay was miserable. As when it was suspected and confirmed I was taking my mother out of Friends Care my mother was practically ignored. Unprofessional...NON Compassion AND Authenticity of just how this "facility" truly is came pouring out. The morning of my mother's discharge I arrived at the time that was agreed upon the day prior to (which was 11:00a.m.) As I walked to my mother's room Becky Baker ($$Director of Admissions $ Marketing$$) was talking to someone in my mother's room...as she saw me she could have spoken BUT she chose to show her true colors too. I find my mother's bed stripped...deep cleaning taking place AND my mother nowhere to be found. Shocked I asked the lady cleaning where my mother was to be told she was "somewhere"...my mother was down the hall...sat out in a main common area with her dirty and clean clothes mixed together in a transparent garbage bag on a table where people sit and eat...she was disheveled...dried breakfast food on her clothes...hair not combed...face not washed...and her leg was bleeding from where they had torn her leg on the wheelchair she had been sitting in since approximately 7a.m. (since I inquired how long she had been sitting like THAT). SO I hope this gives anyone reading this review of just how this "facility" treats elderly people and their families. As I love my mother to the moon and back again AND only wanted the very best care for her. What we got was ANYthing BUT that. AND I pray that when Becky Baker...Dr. Katz and all the rest who enabled the poor care my mother received at Friends Care get to that point in their life they receive exactly what they gave my mother. ****KARMA****
