This year was the 1st Annual Atlanta BBQ Festival held in the green parking lot at Turner Field…read more Although it was a bit warm outside, it smelled really good if you were standing on what I call BBQ Row - a row of competition BBQ teams that had set up for the BBQ tasting contest. I sampled several different teams, and my favorites were Lazy Bear and Fox Bros. For both teams the flavor of the meat without sauce was perfect - just the right amount of smokiness and tenderness. Fox Bros served a rib that was so well cooked I actually licked the bone. There were several other vendors on site - including Yelp! Some vendors had games or would take your photo with their wares. There were a couple of festival standards - a jewelry maker, t-shirt vendor, a vendor with aprons and BBQ mitts emblazoned with sports team logos, and of course, Sweetwater Beer. There was also live music. I was able to hear two acts - Running Wild Band (country/rock) and Antonia Lawrence (reggae gospel). I enjoyed both acts, and I especially loved one of the lyrics from a Running Wild song "I'll just drink until the memory of her is gone." Gotta love country! There was a face painting and temporary tattoo table for kids. There was also an area with inflatable kids games, but since I don't have kids and didn't borrow one for the event, I can't speak to any of these things. But they were busy, so I'm guessing the kids were enjoying the games. Overall, I think it was a great event. I think they had a good turnout but it will be more crowded next year as word gets around. And free BBQ can't be beat!

Festival of Chariots or Rathayatra is a celebration of Hindu and Indian culture featuring exciting live entertainment, singing, dancing, parades, and more. The Rathayatra festival originated in the ancient city of Jagannatha Puri in India 5000 years ago to celebrate the Hindu Lord of the Universe. In addition to the parades and other festivities, the festival features a vegetarian feast highlighting Indian cuisine, music, a dramatic presentation, art vendors, a magic show, face painting, henna tattoos, and much more. This cultural event is fun for the whole family and it is FREE. The Festival celebrates Lord Krishna's return to Vrindaban and is held annually in the months of June-July to honor Lord Jagannatha, which means Lord of the Universe. Lord Jagannatha is a particular Deity form of Lord Krishna, fashioned from neem wood and brightly painted. The residents of Puri have been worshipping this form for many centuries. Five hundred years ago, Lord Chaitanya, the most merciful incarnation of Lord Krishna used to daily visit Lord Jagannatha in the temple and see Him in a mood of intense separation, much like Srimati Radharani who was parted from her beloved Krishna most of her days. For the festivities; there are three chariots, one for each of the three deities; Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra. The canopied chariots are decorated with flowers and balloons and are pulled with long, thick ropes by hundreds of people. The chariots are accompanied by a procession of devotees who are ecstatically dancing and chanting the Lord's Holy Names: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. This Maha-Mantra or great chant is found in the Puranas and Upanishads and is specifically recommended in this age of Kali as the means of God realization. Lord Chaitanya personally designated it as the Maha-Mantra and practically demonstrated the effects of the chanting. The first time the Festival of Chariots was performed outside of India was on July 9, 1967 in San Francisco, under the supervision of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977). Srila Prabhupada, as he is more affectionately known, is the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and is the tenth generation from Lord Chaitanya. Srila Prabhupada lead the Hare Krishna Movement, guiding his disciples to open temples and perform festivals all over the world.

CALLANWOLDE ART FESTIVAL…read more Just as I was starting to have "festival withdrawal" symptoms, I discovered this little festival and decided that it was a great opportunity to get out of the house. This festival is located at the Callanwolde Art Center on Briarcliff Road and cost only $5 to enter. Today's show featured a local artists who showcased beautiful works of art from various mediums. Some of the featured items included drawings, oil paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, clothing and pottery. There were items for every budget and every taste level. I am all about jewelry and saw some really nice pieces today but nothing unique to my collection or interesting enough to purchase. Today was all about just exploring the different forms of art, listening to the live music and speaking with the artists about their work. The highlight of today's visit was having one of the vendors recognize me from a Yelp review, (small world). She is the owner of Andrews Toffee and was so appreciative and flattered by my review that she rushed from behind the table and gave me a big hug. It made my day! She is such a sweetheart and so deserving of the recognition. Her product, (homemade toffee) is amazing and I was more than happy to "shine the light". Yelping is the ultimate opportunity to support small independent business owners. Many of them are very small and only show at local festivals and fairs, so they are really appreciative of the attention that is drawn to their products and services. The next time that you attend a festival or fair, take the time to Yelp about your good time and to highlight some of the vendors. People won't know unless you tell them! **** Unfortunately, I was not able to take photos at this particular venue so there are none posted with this review. **** Although there were a couple of food trucks featured, there was no where to sit and enjoy the pizza or gumbo. **** There is a cafe on the second level but it only featured junk food, (crackers, cookies candy etc), so be sure to eat before you go. **** This is an annual festival so prepare for next year!

I went to my first Chomp & Stomp on Saturday in Cabbagetown and had a fun time. This year's Chomp…read more& Stomp was the 9th annual and, according to the program, had 90 individual chilis, 30 restaurant chilis, 60 artists, 30 food vendors, 15 "celebrity" judges, and between 16,000 to 19,000 attendees. It was packed. I heard from friends who attended last year that the chili ran out fast, so I made a point to show up before the chili tasting began this year. The chili tasting began at 12:30pm this year, which is later than last year. According to Chomp & Stomp's web site, the time was pushed back to allow more time for people to try the chili. We arrived around noon, bought spoons for $5 each, and headed directly towards Tye St, one of the streets with the individual chili teams. As 12:30 drew closer, people started counting down the minutes and seconds. Exactly at 12:30, the teams released their cups of chili. It was a madhouse. We just walked randomly from tent to tent grabbing whatever cups were available to be taken. I tried everything from green tomato chili to Korean BBQ braised brisket chili to classic beef 'n bean chili to black rat chili (the lady told me there was actual rat in there, but I think she was lying) to Srirachili (chili with Sriricha) to Mother Puncher's New Mexico green chili to chili that tasted like cigarettes to chili with hushpuppies to turkey chili. It was a lot of chili and some of them set my mouth on fire. I made sure *not* to try the Ghostface chili, made with ghost peppers. I love eating spicy foods, but that is one pepper I don't mess around with. The chili ran out fast. I estimate all the individual chili teams ran out of chili in 30 to 45 minutes, so by 1:00 to 1:15, all those chilis were wiped out. Restaurant row had some chili left after the first hour, though, and those included good restaurants such as D.B.A. Barbecue, Fox Bros, Graveyard Tavern, and Grindhouse Killer Burgers. Unless they change the setup next year, I would focus on tackling the individual chilis first, then when they run out, head towards restaurant row. Two of my friends showed up around 1pm, bought spoons, and ended up not being able to try any individual chilis. Bummer. You have to come early if you want them. There were many food vendors selling everything from corn dogs to funnel cakes to popsicles (King of Pops). There were also several food trucks and a couple Sweetwater trucks (selling beer, of course). Cabbagetown Park and Brussels Sprout Park each had stages setup and live music was played throughout the day. I didn't get a chance to check out any of the artists' booths because I was too busy eating and having a good time at the park. I saw several of my fellow Yelpers out there including Ivan S, Jason W, and Edward L. Parking is not bad as long as you don't mind walking. Chomp & Stomp has a created a very handy map on Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&vps=1&jsv=286b&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115175644139170354955.000492fb2861362a01ac5) to let you know exactly where the festival is taking place and what streets are closed. Back then it was a small affair, just some modest card tables with pots of bubbling chili. I only ate a little since they ran out so quickly. That was many years ago. A few years later, when I next went to Chomp and Stomp I was, "Wow. They've taken over [the then newly renovated] Cabbagetown Park! It's huge!" I still had a hard time parking. Also, I only ate chili from Agave since everyone else ran out. More years passed. In Nov. 2010, I returned to Chomp and Stomp. I was, "Holy crap. When did they start doing THIS? Art vendors up and down the street? (And not the same ol' ones you see at every arts festival.) Two concert stages? Two whole blocks of just individual chili competitors?" We got there early. I made James drive. He was able to park. I popped a beer by 10am. I bought my spoon for $5. Chili was served at noon. By 1, I was bursting with red chili, green chili, mole (as in the sauce, not the animal nor the skin formation nor the weight of 6.022x10^23 atoms) chili, veggie chili, deer chili, goat chili, pork chili and, yes the ultimate winners, Korean BBQ chili. By 1:30, most of the chili was gone. We never even made it to the restaurant competitors. It was just as well. I couldn't take anymore. It was fun. It was crowded. There were hipsters as far as the chunky-framed glasses could see, ironic facial hair dripping with multiple flavors of chili. There was bluegrass, there was alt rock. There was a traveling circus. There was Sweetwater beer, Palookaville gourmet corndogs and Grindhouse burgers, if you never got to the chili. There were also five stars to be given on Yelp.

A chance to support my sister-in-law whom has a form of autism called Asperger syndrome. Asperger's is a higher functioning form of Autism and is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and by restricted and repetitive interests and behavior. Autism itself is more severe. It is a battle for families, and this is a wonderful time of year where massive support is shown for the cause of finding a cure. So many amazing families walking in team groups in support of a family member or friend, often with their picture printed on the shirts! What I particularly love is the support for each other that is oozing out of every smile and every word of encouragement along the way. Local Sororities cheering as walkers cross the finish line caused some to burst out running with glee. One little fella was so overjoyed with excitement it brought a tear to my eye from the shear joy that radiated from his face. Today I met Megan, who was only 19 and has Asperger syndrome. She was on our team and we quickly became old friends. Something about my personality & nature bonded with her and I swear I got a hug, or a kiss on the cheek, or a pat on the back, or an arm around my neck about every 5 minutes. She walked with me, danced in the street with me, told me all about her daily life, sat with me when we ate after the event and showed me every picture on her phone (including the one she took of me when I wasn't looking). My sister-in-law nervously watched our interaction, curious to see how I would react to all the attention. Not because she thought I would react badly, but her characteristics of Asperger's causes her not to like physical contact or people within certain parameters of her personal space. But you know what... I loved every minute of it, because THIS is what life is all about!!! I was sooooo honored that another human being quickly felt a sense of safety in my presence to be themselves that I was moved with every gesture of friendship Megan displayed. Had a Funday Saturday, attended the 2025 Decatur Wine Festival with my Friend and her Daughter (all…read morenewbies), it was soooo much fun! Over 300 plus wines to sample and you use the souvenir wine glass given upon check it! The weather was beautiful, the wine was being poured! Tasted some sweet wines that were really good, not a fan of the dry wine. Food vendors were there for purchase, of you needed a snack! We decidedto eat st Leon's will do a separate review (it was located along shops/restaurants in the Decatur square. Parking was not bad, we parked in the Court house parking lot for $6! It's super laid back with over 200 wines and food. The used to include the food with your ticket, but now you have to buy it from the vendors. Luckily, there are tons of restaurants in the area to visit when you are done with the festival. I love that they had covid protocols in place for entry this year. We had to provide vaccine proof or negative tests.

The bf and I were full when we arrived so we didn't care for the food. We were here more for the hangout with his crew. For the few acts we saw, there were traditional dancing, a game contest for the kids on stage, and singing. I'm assuming there were more modern acts like hip hop dancing or something for fun. Well, usually there's something like that to spin things up. The location of this event was in China Town, but it was towards the back of China Town at this separate building. Parking was super packed so be patient.
