I don't smoke but the few times I've gone as a guest I smell like an ashtray when I get home. YUCK! Another membership fee that I'm not sure I want to spend. Very close to home. They provide many activites for its members: Art, Computer classes, Counseling, Knitting, Writing, Discussion groups, Dancing, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc. It also houses the COA: Council on Aging which provides nursing and social worker care. This place puts on a wide variety of services for the community. Check out their website for more info. The building is beautiful too. It has a few halls - you can rent them out for private functions, a library, facilities, etc. It's just a great place. Has it's own free giant parking lot, too. Just awesome.

I am always quick to applaud the city and surrounding towns (way to go Cambridge and Somerville) for the wealth of outdoor activities, both solo and team-related, available to residents. One of my favorite such Boston-based young-people-centric outdoor activities is my weekly WAKA game at Roberto Clemente Field in the Fens. My team, the Electric Mayhem, has been together for years in the Ironsides League (there are several leagues in town), and through it I have met some of the nicest and most fun folks you can hope for. If anyone ever thinks that it's hard to make new friends, sign up for a WAKA team and you'll have a dozen new ones after a day. The Ironsides League (and I hear the same about the other ones) is just competitive enough to be fun. Teams have a vested interest in winning and playing hard, but not so much of an interest that folks get disgusted and enraged after a loss. Everyone's there to just play and have a good time. The leagues are all well-managed and that management leads to the quality of organization and general spirit of WAKA in Boston. So yeah, in short, get some comfy sneakers on and get to the field. It's game time.

You don't know any one and you find yourself getting excited to do laundry on the weekends just to pass time and loneliness. Ok, I admit, that's slightly dramatic and maybe a bit true. I joined WAKA when my childhood friend moved into the city so she could meet people outside her grad school program. After trying another kickball league, I just didn't want to enroll in a free agent alone. The concept of adult kickball leagues is pretty standard, you play a game of kickball and then you head to a bar to drink. At a previous league, everyone hangs out only with their team mates and hardly any mingling happens between teams. It's quite the opposite with WAKA and I could give credit to the company but the people make the difference. If you're not a person that likes high energy or loud bars, you're best off never joining this league. You really have to be prepare for happy, excited and really fun people. Yes the teams can be very competitive on the field but you may also make friends for a lifetime. It's cheesy, but I've found it to be truth in the making.

The food, drinks, and live band also create the full experience. The non-special-event nights at the Fly are also fabulous. This club has a reputation of being a little bit preppier than others and it is classy and cleaner. I miss college :/ !!!

I don't give it four stars only because the people are not the most exciting, and all you can do is have drinks or play pool. But it is usually one of the few places you can go to keep drinking after 2 AM so it's worth checking out after other places close. **Update**: it had been a few years, but about a week or two ago I was able to get into the place again after a messy night in Harvard Square and one too many Tasty Burgers. They still let you drink for free, which was great. I made some Harvard references and the club members seemed wary but OK with me being there.

Today, I was given ice packs, Motrin and Tylenol for extreme swelling in lower extremities due to…read moreacute osteoarthritis. They wouldn't allow me to elevate my feet for medical reasons on a chair because common sense did not prevail. A volunteer upstairs allowed me to elevate legs and a young woman Deseree attempted to pull chair out from underneath me when I said I need a minute as I had bilateral knee replacements as well. No common sense. She said if you have a bag (lol) put.your feet on that. Moments like that diminish the good that is accomplished here.

There are just so many good things to say about this place that I'm not sure where to start…read more First, it is not a "shelter" in the typical sense of the word, and the staff and guests do not refer to it as a "shelter". They consider themselves a "community", and act as such. There are NO lines for anything at the WLP. The women are served their meals at their tables by volunteers, and their materials are bussed for them once they are done, unless they choose to self-bus. The food. Oh heavens! WLP prides itself on serving nourishing, FRESH food. Each meal will have all nutritional requirements met, and there is always a veggie option. We're not talking canned goods or sandwiches here, folks. No, this is chopped and diced fresh veggies, prime cut meats, the finest ingredients. If you're a good cook and after you've volunteered a few times, they are happy to let you get in the kitchen and help whip up stuff. The resident chef there, Gina, is wonderfully creative in the kitchen (and very nice), and from time to time, other professional chefs from local restaurants come in to put together a meal. The WLP isn't jsut a food place, although that's the highlight of the day. It also provides the women with full time advocacy support to help with finding housing, food, or other services. There is a computer room/resource room that the ladies may use. There is also a nap room where women can go to get sometimes some much needed rest, and also a quiet room for just some peace, solitude, and maybe reading or reflecting. Women are also able to get various toiletries and clothing that they may need. They may do their laundry and take showers. The Program Manager, Heather (also very, very nice and competent) has done a great job of making sure that there are interesting activities for guests if they choose to participate: yoga, painting, field trips, knitting, etc. Since the WLP is run as a "community", the staff are INCREDIBLY patient with the women, and if a guest is being disorderly or breaking a rule, she is not immediately tossed out, but is counseled and given more than one opportunity to redeem herself by correcting her behavior. Throwing someone out is a last option at the WLP. WLP treats its volunteers as the valuable commodity we are. We are appreciated, thanked, and made to feel a part of the "team". Added Perk: They also have really incredible volunteer thank you events! I enjoy volunteering here. I learn something new and meet new people each time I go. I don't have a lot of spare time to volunteer, but when I do, the WLP gets me all the time, every time. It's important to know that this place could not be so great without us- the community at large supporting it through donations, volunteering, contributions, etc. The staff, Regina, Linda, Joanna, Lauren, Linnie, and Cheryl are terrific- go meet them! This is just a wonderful, wonderful place. You will not leave here without your heart being touched in some way.

I can't stress this enough how easy it is to volunteer. The diversity of organizations as well is superb. They offer everything from food kitchens to the symphony! To join they require a $30 one time registration fee and you must attend an online (zoom) orientations. Stress free all around, and such an amazing way to interact with our community!
