Because I love coffee and everything about it, I've set out on an unofficial quest to try every coffee house in Austin and the surrounding area. I finally tried Caffé Medici. I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. I'm kind of picky about my coffee and I am not easily influenced by what others say, however, my taste buds say this place really lives up to its reputation. The lattes are smooth and bold at the same time - bold enough to grow hair on your chest if you get your coffee full on leaded. (I sometimes like to order de-caf....of the "why bother" variety). If you don't want milk in your latte, they offer soy as an alternative. They swirl lovely art on top of the lattes for you. The lattes are prepared quickly. They also happen to offer pre-packaged gluten-free cookies in their pastry case, which I didn't try on this visit. It's an old house. There are unique seats out front made of stone with wood planks drilled in. The atmosphere is pleasant and the staff is nice. You can find a bookshelf with books, magazines and games, or you can enjoy burying yourself in your laptop.....a little something for everyone it seems. Cool place, great coffee. read more

Gold standard cappuccino. There isn't a place in Austin that serves a better cappuccino than Medici. Solid. I almost never order 2 when I'm working from a coffee shop ... except when I'm at Medici. Really sweet folks who work the bar. It's pretty packed throughout the day, but around 4:30, starts clearing out. Great little patio and lots of folks hang out there and work. At one point in my workday, I peer out the window and see a woman....with her very large per iguana perched on her table. You know. A lizard has got to get their people watch on too. It is crowded on weekday mornings. There are blocks of stone to sit on outside. Also there are tall chairs outside on deck. There are indoor tables with wood chairs. Service was courteous & they keep the espresso machine moving (or did so on our Friday morning visit). Place is full of the usual Austin-mix (i.e., a little bit of everything). Had a simple latte, my stable. Though spoiled by our Tulsa-wonder-of-theworld (http://www.yelp.com/biz/doubleshot-coffee-company-tulsa), I found it a capable, albeit bland latte. Espresso had a balanced friendliness; it was lacking in the sweet part of the draw that I so love at my DS. For reference, I no longer flavor syrup any espresso drink, at least so long as I can help it. If not engrossed in conversation, I would have headed back up to pay my $.50 or whatever to add a shot of something. Like the environment, found it a capable cup. Passed this shop after a long run by the river, and both the amazing glazed donut and deliciously robust cup of coffee rejuvenated me! Stopped by while in town for SXSW. Was concerned about some of the comments but in my constant quest for good coffee I decided not to be deterred. Since it was breakfast time, I went with the cappuccino and a berry muffin. Both were delicious. The place was busy but had no troubles finding a place to sit. Yeah, they don't have the most comfortable furniture but I don't understand why some people think buying a cup of coffee gives you the right to sit there and work all day as if it was your office. The biggest downer is the limited parking. This place is obviously a sit-down-with-your-computer for hours coffee house. Cozy coffee spot in Clarksville. The coffee shop is an old home, and you can sit outside or inside. I had a cappuccino, it was delicious. Both times their pastry/baked good section seemed sparse, luckily I was just in the mood for coffee but seems like they could work on a better selection. Since I live in North Campus, I wanted to, for my own convenience, visit the location on Guadalupe. Too bad I didn't know where exactly on Guadalupe it was. When I found out the it was right by the CVS, too bad that there was no street parking available. Quite frustrating. I'm going to give the Guadalupe location a big fat 0 stars for that one. I went to West Lynn in Clarksville... that was a lot better experience. Right next to a laundry mat. The parking lot when you approach has signs all over specifying that this lot is only for Laundry mat customers. A bit confusing so I did one pass then turned back around and went in. Apparently only half the lot is for laundry mat peeps and half is for coffee house peeps. Went inside the coffee house. The look was of an old historic house that was renovated inside for coffee. Quite a few people were sitting around studying and working on their laptops. I don't quite remember exactly but it didn't seem like it was loud inside there at all. I went to the counter and because this is my 3rd coffee house on my list, I knew exactly what to get - for comparison purposes. Right before I placed an order, I noticed two colorful diagrams on my right. I asked the Barista what they were and he explained to me that these diagrams explain the various complexities of the types of coffee. The wheel next to it shows everything that can go wrong with the smell / taste of coffee. I thought that was very interesting. If I had more time, I would have actually liked to study those wheels and see if I could make sense from them. In the interest of time, I saved it for another day. The Barista was very nice and helpful. I ordered a Hazelnut Espresso Latte. I guess we both got lost in conversation because he never gave me my receipt that I asked for and he didn't put any Hazelnut syrup in it either. He did, however, make a nice design with the froth of the milk when he topped off my cup. He was nice / wise enough to ask me if I wanted the drink to go or for in house, what Houndstooth coffee people didn't ask..they assumed I wanted it in house. You get a gold star for that! I got my latte, went over to the sugar bar. I proceeded to add 2 splendas, as I've always done with coffee drinks due to their natural bitter taste. I guess Medici gets a few Gold Stars for this: Apparently their coffee is not bitter. I took a small sip of it right when the Barista handed me the drink, very drinkable in terms of temperature and not bitter at all. He told me that unlike other coffee houses, Medici does not heat their drinks to a ridiculous temperature that makes you wait ages before you can enjoy it. I thought that was nice and thoughtful. After I added my 2 splendas and mixed it in well, I took another sip. Very Very Veryyyy sweet. It was probably a little too sweet, I'm assuming because there was no need for that much sweetner to be added to this quality coffee. Starbucks on the other hand, I have to add 2, maybe 3 packets to make it right. The Barista and I exhanged some more small talk before I left the coffee house. Overall great experience, great coffee. I'm not sure why I have a little bit of an aftertaste after sipping on this drink and waiting for a little while before my next sip. I'm hoping / assuming it is from my splenda and not from the original drink. I guess I'll have to go back one day and find out? I recommend Caffe Medici to anyone who wants superior coffee. Starbucks is so over rated now. I don't hate them, but I definitely don't think of that corporate chain as highly as I used to before my Coffee House Hunt! read more

The people working here are awesome. They are super friendly and make you feel right at home. I've been here twice and the atmosphere has felt lively and fun for a coffee shop. They have Tacodeli breakfast tacos, which is a major + in my book. The latte I got was good, but not amazing. The coffee wasn't particularly unique or intriguing--not excellent or great, but good nonetheless. The only real negative I have is that the parking is pretty limited. I don't make a habit of getting coffee here because I think it tastes bad and it's overpriced. However, I ran out of coffee this morning and any coffee is better than no coffee, so I decided to stop by to get a cup to go, on my way home from the vet. I walked through the door with my puppy in tow and before the door even had a chance to close behind me, a barista rushed up to me and loudly asked me, "Ma'am, is that a service dog??" to which I responded no, and that I just wanted a cup of coffee to go. Based on her reaction, you would have thought I had just unleashed a swarm of plague-infested winged monkeys into the sanctity of their coffee shop. She told me a little breathlessly that I can't have the animal in there, health regulations, what-have-you... I was a little worried she was about to whip out a Hazmat suit and sound an alarm because it had been 12 seconds and I still was there with my pup, clearly infesting the place, but I did ask her if I could order a cup of coffee to go and wait outside, to which she agreed. I went outside and the manager promptly appeared. I asked him if it was OK for me to be standing on their patio or if I had to leave the premises entirely while I waited for my coffee to be made. He told me I could wait there and he'd take my payment now and bring the coffee out to me when it was ready. I told him he might talk to the barista about her reaction to my bringing a puppy inside having been a bit overly dramatic. He told me he'd talk to her but that a lot of people come in there with pets who "try to cheat the system." (maybe telling them they're service animals when they aren't?) I told him, "I'm not trying to cheat the system - I'm just trying to get a cup of coffee to go." Oh, the drama, the fuss, the angst, all in response to a simple and perfectly harmless error! ALL I WANTED WAS A CUP OF COFFEE, TO GO. I'm so out of sorts as a result of this encounter, I'm thinking I might need an emotional support animal next time I visit a coffee shop. And, by the way, the small cup of coffee I got cost me around $3.50 + tax and it's bitter and burnt and not even hot, and I'd throw it away if I didn't seriously need the caffeine. On that note, perhaps the staff at Medici might consider cutting down a bit on their own caffeine intake - after they're done spraying the place down with bleach, and taking their iodine pills, of course. If you are looking for a coffee shop with lots of personality, unlike the chains, Caffe Medici is the place! It has a nice comfortable atmosphere all day long, they hang local artist's work on the walls, the staff is wonderful, and they know coffee! They also serve sandwiches, bagels, and other pastries, but trust me go for the coffee - simply delicious and a good variety too. This is a sweet little neighborhood favorite in Clarksville. (And, Clarksville has its own scene going on - this area of Austin definitely warrants further exploration - check it out.) The shop is above the street and the interior is somewhat small, but very tastefully appointed. There is a small porch out front with a few chairs - perfect for hanging-out and doing some people watching. Some cement tables are scattered below the porch along the street. This area lacks the hustle and bustle of South 1st and SoCo, so if you are looking for a quiet, laid-back coffee shop in Austin, look no further. I've been here three times and this is definitely a local place. People from the neighborhood walk here with their kids and dogs for their morning java fix. But it's a very friendly local place so you'll fit right in. The employees here are among the best you'll find in an Austin coffee shop - they are very nice and pleasant. I like (strong) Italian and French roast coffee and the coffee here did not disappoint. All in all, Austin has a growing inventory of great and unique coffee shops - Caffe Medici is one of them. read more

I have the worst taste in my mouth from the espresso. Bitter, burnt and over pulled. I review espresso all over the world and this place is at the bottom of the list. Nice people, cute place and I'm sure everyone means well. Maybe the coffee is ok, didn't try it. But the espresso was undrinkable. I try to find positive elements of any business but honesty this shot I couldn't get washed out of my mouth. By way of full disclosure, I'm not particularly a coffee drinker. It wasn't like I was beaten as a child with a bag of beans or made to talk to Juan Valdez for too long or anything, it's just that I like coffee but can't do too much of it. I may have been the only person in Caffe Medici with an Italian soda inside and a Diet Mountain Dew in the car. I digress. There are lots of coffee fiends in this town, and this place has become a sort of Mecca to the brown bean set: I recall at the other (drag) locale sitting down and watching three of these guys expound upon the subtle differences and nuances between the beans, the notes apparent in tasting, the historical perspectives of the regions where the beans were grown. So that was cool. But I was here for a meeting and sipping on a giant Italian soda when the folks I was meeting with stopped in. On a hot spring (or summer day) I could definitely see myself working on something chilled with ice here: atmosphere while crowded was quiet (but not quite reverential like you'll find in some coffee shops), and I even tried to eavesdrop from across the room and around a corner when someone was talking about reviews. I didn't get much out of that but a chuckle, but now that I have the lay of the land, I don't think it'd be a stretch at all to assume I'll drop back in here sometime. I will start out by saying, Cafe Medici makes great coffee... but there are many places in Austin that do. So what is the deal with the hipster attitude? While ordering my cappacino, I specified that I'd like one Splenda. The hipster taking my order notified me that they don't carry Splenda... with contempt. Mixed Bag at Caffe Medici - long time customer WON'T BE BACK. First off, the coffee is DELICIOUS...but product isn't enough.... With tons of awesome coffee shops and roasters in town, it's gotta be more than just a nice cup of joe. The thing that turned me from a fan to "never going back" the attitude from snarling barrister girl on my recent visit (probably my 20th this year). Here's what happened: When she was taking my order for a soy latte, (the same thing I order every time), she was on the phone and not paying much attention. When she started making my drink I looked over and saw her using regular milk. I gently waved at her to try to get her attention so she wouldn't have to redo the drink and she waved me off telling me she'd be with me in a second. I waited and then she got off the phone. I said, "I'm sorry that's supposed to be soy..." Her response, and this blew me away, "You need to tell me that when you order..." STUNNED... Really lady? Wow, so not only were you not paying attention to me when I was ordering but then when I tried to correct you, you blew me off and THEN told me I needed to do something differently because you're incompetent? Hmmm,.. THEN... it got nasty. She takes the milk from the steel steamer and pours it back into the milk jug (TOTAL CROSS CONTAMINATION) I watched, grossed out and wanting to simply leave in disgust. So, as much as I like the yummy coffee I won't be back to this shop, I'm happy to vote with my dollars somewhere where I'm not treated this way and where it's safe to consume non-contaminated product. read more

For some reason I could not totally wake up today. Reviews looked good for Caffe Medici and I was right there in the neighborhood so I knew help was on the way. The cup of French press coffee I ordered was rich, mellow and delicious and it did wake me up as I had hoped. The taste of the coffee bean was without any bitterness (well, that is what the barista told me and whether this influenced my taste buds and brain, I don't know). I took it to go but decided sipping out of that plastic lid would ruin my bean tasting so went without. It was good to the end. Both baristas were friendly and knowledgeable about how the coffee undergoes a gentle roasting by the roaster. Folks here are really friendly -- looks like its more of the working crowd and the casual conversations happen pretty organically from one table to another. Great wifi, with adequate pluggage and a great use of the space. I wish they had delicious diet coke but their coffee selection looked extensive and I think they've got the mix down right on non coffee to coffee drink ration. read more

To know me is to know that I've been a coffee house junkie since I arrived in Austin from Oslo in 2004. I've always supported the local coffee house scene and have been seeking the best espresso "space" in town for some time now. I'll always consider Josh B. and Progress Coffee a personal favorite because I believe they took a lot of risks early on and were a major catalyst to the recent local coffee house explosion in Austin over the last few years. IMO, they raised the "bar" when it came to service, entertainment, food/ beverage quality, and atmosphere. If I lived or worked closer to the East Side, Progress would still be my cafe of choice. One of those newer coffee houses to rise up post-Progress was Caffe Medici (proper pronunciation /mdti/ MEH-di-chee). I immediately was drawn to the understated and very "Austin" space on West Lynn when they opened and it did not hurt that it was located near my home and on the way to work on Congress Ave. I have a good friend, Alex C, who I deeply trust on all things food and coffee. He was quick to note the quality of CM's beans and espresso machine and the talent of their baristas. He was right! I've been a fan and frequent visitor since. I often start my workday there with a double soy macchiato and ice water. I think I'm even still sitting atop the leader board on Gowalla... Where's my discounted macchiato guys? :) Seek out Lorenzo or Patrick at the bar. I've found them both to be very helpful and give great service, but they are all super solid. Ask them about coffee and you will definitely learn something new. Only two pet peeves -- and they are very minor in my eyes. 1.) Tough to park if you want to drop in for a quick coffee 2) They charge extra for soy milk (and the same up-charge wether it's a full latte or a macchiato). Either way, paying w/ cash saves you $$$. Other than that, I consider CM my current favorite coffee house in town (considering coffee quality, baristas, atmosphere, quality of people, convenience) and the "Progress Coffee of the West Side". read more
