In Italy, you need medical clearance to run races longer than 20km (so, for half marathons and marathons).
If you are coming from the US, keep this in mind. You can get a certificate from your doctor back home, or if you are living in Italy as an expat (like moi!), it's easiest to book an appointment with a sports clinic.
There are a couple clinics in Milan, but booking an appointment is such a hassle in August. For me, it was easier to book an appointment at this clinic in Como, since they had an opening for Friday afternoon.
The head doctor is very nice, and it's easy to communicate (in English) with him via email. For sports exams, they require you to bring your urine with you (LOL!) in a cup you can get from a local pharmacy. During the exam, they do normal checks (height, weight, blood pressure), an archaic breath test called "spirometry", and heart rate at rest and with "stress" (in this clinic, you pedal on a stationary bicycle for about 2 minutes as the intensity slowly increases).
At the end of the exam, you get a certificate saying if you passed or not, basically if you are "fit" for the sport you want to compete in.
If you are interested in obtaining a certificate for running races, request your certificate for "atletica leggera".
There's not too much information online about the behind-the-scenes of registering and running races in Italy, so I hope this review is helpful! The Italy race scene is much different than running races in Northern Europe or the USA. read more
