Well, that and I had 14 minutes to kill before the next Luas... Instead of wasting your money on a cheap takeaway, find the recipe of your favourite dish online (i.e. black bean rice) and go to the Emporium to get the ingredients. You can later spend the money that you saved on beer. Even if you're completely useless in the kitchen, you can still shop here. They have a new deli counter where I spotted a tasty roasted duck and on the other side of the shop, there's a fridge full of fizzy Korean drinks. Part of the fun is guessing what items are. You can spend quite some time studying the brightly packaged food which really gives the store a unique feel. Halal Meat is also sold here. Although the store is small in size, it is not cluttered. The food is very affordable and a great find if you want to experiment with your cooking skills. Jamal, the owner, is extremely friendly and helpful.

Also, this is the only Asian grocery in the area that doesn't smell funny. For your benefit, I will list a few items below that I have since purchased at Asian Food Co. which were ridiculously less-expensive than anywhere else: giant cans of garbanzo beans (chickpeas) 18 fresh eggs for €2 falafel selection of 5 baklava for €1.50 tahini garlic coriander naan easy heat vegetarian Indian meals 2-for-1 €1.50 curry coconut milk corriander mangos onions habanero peppers butternut squash 1/4 cut of a pumpkin japaense eggplant (long, skinny aubergines) and the grand finale product unseen in Ireland... ...perfectly ripe avocados.

There are sacks of rice and flour from which you can take as much or as little as you need. This is the place to go if you're Muslim and in need of Halal meat. The butcher in the back of the shop prepares the meat according to strict Muslim dietary laws. In fact Asian Food Co. is more than just a grocer. It serves the Islamic community, putting people of the same faith in contact with one another. The shop sells religious books, prayer beads and DVDs. It also gives other Muslims access to a prayer room.

I recently needed salami, mozerella, olive oil, and olives. As much as I'd love to fly over to Italy for my Saturday shopping, I just can't get there these days. Little Italy is Italy in Dublin! The jarred sauces are amazing and nothing like you'd find in your local grocery store. The meat and cheese selection is very enticing and economical. I often get a selection here for very little money but with impressive results. They often have freshly baked bread in stock, too I recommend the Pocket Coffee, which is chocolate and coffee but is only available certain times of the year. The staff is very helpful, too. The opening hours aren't great for picking things up after work though. Bf sure to stop in at Christmas when they're very, well stocked.

We were running out of time on our hunt to find them when I realized, 'I've got my trusty guidebook!!' And that's how we ended up here. It was 12 Euros for 6 oysters and a glass of wine. Since there were four of us, the lady was nice enough to give us 4 cups of wine (yes, plastic cups - it's a farmer's market, what do you expect!) They even threw in an extra oyster! SO FRESH! SO BIG! (cue that's-what-she-said joke). Compared to NYC oysters, these babies looked like they were on steroids! They also have this dipping sauce (had onions and was really vinegar-y, but good. But if you don't like the sour, you should just take the oyster straight.) Didn't eat anything else from other stands because we just had lunch. However, I believe they had shish kebabs, crepes, and bread. Oh and FYI - Sheridans Cheesemongers was there (saw this place on Anthony Bourdain when he went to Dublin so thought this might be worth mentioning). Definitely check out this farmer's market!

Most of the products are similar, but from different brands or focusing on different sectors. They also have a few baked goods I've never seen in Shop Easi. And, possibly because they reopened recently, they have loads of 2-for-1 specials and markdowns. Plus, there are brains in the freezer. Brains! The guy at the tills who I talked with the first two times I was in there was really nice; a different guy has been hesitant but friendly. The butcher counter minced some of my beef order fresh when their stock came up short, which was nice. So do I think this place has a chance? Judging by the amount of business it's had the last several times I've been in there, yes, I do. And it's the best place to go if you want two kilos of Greek yoghurt for under €2.

I have to especially recommend the pre-made pizza dough, it's the best one I've found in town, and you'll of course also find all the toppings you need to make a "home-made" pizza. In the back of the shop you'll find a very appetizing deli counter with ready-to-go soups and sandwiches. Turn around and you'll need to fight the urge to grab a cake or two for dessert. This was my best discovery of the week, and it's a hard competition. My only wish was to be an Italian so I could really appreciate the gourmet selection, especially after witnessing my half-Italian housemate turn into a kid in a candy-store.

The rest of the shop is filled with all kinds of wonderful items that perfectly compliment the pastas and can quickly turn them into delicious dishes. If there's still room left to dessert you won't be disappointed with the choices of biscuits and other italian delectables that are piled high in the front of the store. With the Christmas season upon us there was a huge amount of panettone. If that's not enough outside the shop they've got a great little selection of fresh fruits and veg for your picking at very reasonable prices.

A great little place if you're on a budget.
