I found this amazing Asian market on my last full day in Dublin. Oh how I wish I'd discovered it on…read moreday one. I was told there are plenty around, but this is the one I went to closest to the Temple Bar area. They had any and everything you'd imagine from snacks and seasonings to meals and plenty of cookware. I like to try a variety of international snacks whenever I travel out of the country, this time was no different. It's become a satiable and exciting experience for me over the years. From vegan meat substitutes to dried foods, organic teas, cruelty-free cosmetics, and alternative remedies, the store has a wide selection of items. Some of their prices seem reasonable - I compared a few prices for brand-name items and they are fairly competitive with even Amazon. However, others are a bit steep - especially some of their herbs and dried ingredients. This is strange as they are buying these in bulk and you'd imagine they could provide more competitive prices for these items than for the brand name products. However, even some of their bulk food items are reasonably-priced (organic brown risotto rice, an item I've never seen before, was €4.50 for 500 grams) so I think it's a case of making sure you shop prudently. I'm giving them 5/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact. They stock some of the most ethical brands in each category - for example, Dr. Bronner's for soap and Avalon Organics for shampoo. They also support a good number of Irish products such as Yogandha's ethically sourced oils, Iswari organic foods, and Moodley Manor vegan protein products. It's nice (and rare) to be able to walk into a store and find that most of the items are stocked because they have a positive social or environmental impact. This only tends to happen in small, independent health food stores and one or two chain stores like Whole Foods. Maybe it was fate, because I had just been complaining that Dublin doesn't have the kind of delicious and healthy "natural" things easily obtained in the States, where I am from. I did a little internal dance of joy and grabbed the box. Warily of the insane prices in this city, I searched the box for a price... hold the PHONE. €5. €5!! I put that box right where I found it and proceeded to pick up and put down just about everything I found in there. People talk about how eating healthy isn't prohibitively expensive. Those people have never been to Down to Earth. Granted, they are a small independent shop but WTF. On the plus side, the selection is awesome and they have tons of stuff, including fake meat (which I love), tofu, all kind sof soy milk, grains, beans, vitamins, beauty products and more. But boo to the prices.

There is a lovely touch at the front door, a local has print-outs of recipes and the seasonal veg/fruit that go with it. I really like the place, the prices are very fair and you will get value for your money. I use a lot of fruit and veggies for all my cooking and it is very difficult to get quality. I was absolutely astonish by the price of the avocados at 0.99 cent each, this is the best price for the quality you will get, I can guarantee that the same avocado costs up to €1.60 to €1.70 which is an awful lot of a difference, and like this example I could give you many more. Nicky (the owner) appeared to talk to me and explain a bit about the shop and the offers he has and he kindly let me take a photo of the shop. This kind of shops you won't find them anymore and they are such a treat for the area and the locals. There you will select fresh fruit and vegetables with the help of nice people behind the counter who will give you a smile and good service, not like a big super market where you will be wondering about and finding out where to weight your items. We (we all do) are responsible for letting go small places like this instead of supporting the small companies which have a lot more to offer than the big monsters who won't even care what they are selling to you or what kind of food you cook and eat. We were running out of time on our hunt to find them when I realized, 'I've got my trusty guidebook!!' And that's how we ended up here. It was 12 Euros for 6 oysters and a glass of wine. Since there were four of us, the lady was nice enough to give us 4 cups of wine (yes, plastic cups - it's a farmer's market, what do you expect!) They even threw in an extra oyster! SO FRESH! SO BIG! (cue that's-what-she-said joke). Compared to NYC oysters, these babies looked like they were on steroids! They also have this dipping sauce (had onions and was really vinegar-y, but good. But if you don't like the sour, you should just take the oyster straight.) Didn't eat anything else from other stands because we just had lunch. However, I believe they had shish kebabs, crepes, and bread. Oh and FYI - Sheridans Cheesemongers was there (saw this place on Anthony Bourdain when he went to Dublin so thought this might be worth mentioning). Definitely check out this farmer's market!

After several expeditions to the various asian and health food shops around Dublin 2 and 8 I was beginning to lose hope. Everything I saw was either boring, tiny, loaded with sugar or grossly overpriced. That was, until I found this strange little shop beside the polyclinic. Four hundred grams of mixed nuts with no salt, sugar, peanuts or raisons. Four ninety nine. Still a little more than I'd like to pay, but throw in a tray of thirty eggs for four fifty and you've got a deal. Yes, thirty. Thirty eggs. It's the fat man's equivalent of asking 'what can you do me for cash?'. I now subsist on a diet made up entirely of nuts and eggs. I call it the Steve McQueen.

Thoroughly modern, designed with clean lines, bright colours, and a distinct lack of the traditional Mexican decor we've come to expect, yet still just as inviting. Lily and her gang import everything sold in the shop directly from Mexico. Handpicked, thought through and tested for quality, this is the real deal. I got myself some Luchito honey and salsa with rare smoked Mexican chillies. My Lord. It's good. The honey also has chillies in it. It's ridiculous, I've gone through half a jar in two days. They also do small cooking classes in here which I've yet to try, but they could be anything from salsas to tomales to tortillas etc. If you're in the neighbourhood, make sure to call in. Lilly is only bleedin lovely to chat with, and if you're having a dinner party and want to be a bit smug about it, she'll sort you out with some serious ingredients and instructions for them too.

There are salsas, tortillas, hot sauces, chicharones, masa harina, and lots more of this and that that one would want for cooking it up Mexican style. Also, there are classes! All this in a lovely, quaint, and super clean neighborhood shop. The owner is from Mexico and she knows her stuff. And, she's super friendly too. Go on in and chat it up with her. She'll answer any of your questions about the sweet eats she has on her shelves. Now, my compadres, if you've got your geography down, we're -not- a stone's throw from Mexico so the importing prices will reflect that. Hello, my name is Alison and I am a newly converted Asian Food Co. shopper. After buying a week's worth of groceries for a grand total of €13, my loyalty is firmly swayed away from the big boys. Also, this is the only Asian grocery in the area that doesn't smell funny. For your benefit, I will list a few items below that I have since purchased at Asian Food Co. which were ridiculously less-expensive than anywhere else: giant cans of garbanzo beans (chickpeas) 18 fresh eggs for €2 falafel selection of 5 baklava for €1.50 tahini garlic coriander naan easy heat vegetarian Indian meals 2-for-1 €1.50 curry coconut milk corriander mangos onions habanero peppers butternut squash 1/4 cut of a pumpkin japaense eggplant (long, skinny aubergines) and the grand finale product unseen in Ireland... ...perfectly ripe avocados.

There are sacks of rice and flour from which you can take as much or as little as you need. This is the place to go if you're Muslim and in need of Halal meat. The butcher in the back of the shop prepares the meat according to strict Muslim dietary laws. In fact Asian Food Co. is more than just a grocer. It serves the Islamic community, putting people of the same faith in contact with one another. The shop sells religious books, prayer beads and DVDs. It also gives other Muslims access to a prayer room.

Sari sari in fact means 'variety' in Tagalog and usually denotes a sort of Philipino convenience store. This little shop does just that. It's specilases in foods from the Phillipines with a few other Asian items thrown in. As Q pointed out they've got prices that are a lot more reasonable than your bigger chain food stores and a nicer variety of spices as well!
