Now I have tattoos and piercing and I have attended, not one but two, test cricket matches, so I consider myself as someone with a rather high pain threshold. Except for when it comes to hair removal. I have never given birth but am fairly sure that is far less painful. It must be! As the clock reached 11am I started heading to Phoenix Beauty Point for my appointment. I was seriously considering downing a double whiskey but: A: apparently it is frowned upon to drink alcohol before you have had breakfast B: I really don't like whiskey I entered the salon and was greeted by Balo, this beautiful woman with a warm smile. She showed me to the room and asked me to get ready. As I took my clothes off I thought to myself: don't let her kind smile deceive you Alex, she is about to cause you some serious pain. She entered and soon after Operation Hair Elimination started. Now I'm not saying I didn't feel anything; I was stone cold sober remember. But Balo had this incredible way of making me think about everything else but that hot way on my skin. During the session we talked about Camden Market, the history of Afghanistan and the different dialect of Nigeria (thank you Wikipedia for making me sound like an intellectual!) and before I knew it, it was over! Balo was so thorough; not a single hair to be found. I would be lying if I said that my dislike for waxing is now gone; but at Phoenix Beauty Point it feels like a beauty treatment and not torture. The salon was really close to Earl's court tube station especially since I was running a little late! The facial started out with a 15 min back massage. It was okay, then you flip over for the facial. The usual exfoliating, deep moisturizing etc. She checked the state of my skin to pick which type of products to use and straight away she knew my skin was oily (now anyone can see that - but hey it's quite a blessing to have very few wrinkles!). You get the usual sells pitch on products but it was nice that she asked what my biggest concerns were about my skin and recommended a few products. You get a little mini massage as you have your mask on which was nice - compared to other spas in London. Overall, face does looks and feel more radiant so it was perfect to go during the winter.

The woman on the phone asked if I would like to upgrade my free facial (15 mins) to a full one (£40, 1hr 15) and use the voucher as £10 off that price. I declined, as I've never had a facial in my life and thought I should try it out before I commit to a full one. I found the Beauty Basement, not far from Holborn tube, in the basement of The Cutting Room. This is why I've only given it 4 stars, as the size of it (tiny) and the location (underneath a hairdressers, bit confusing) are not ideal. However, Lauretta, who did my facial, was brilliant. It lasted almost double what I was told it would, and never felt like she rushed at all. The facial also involved some massage, which was wonderful, and my skin felt lovely afterwards.
