I strongly recommend the octopus entree, the result of a laborious process aimed at keeping it soft inside and crispy outside. For a more decadent experience, the parmigiana of "pesce bandiera" is an absolute must, a bold choice vs. the more common pairing with tuna. If undecided, go for the grandiose appetizer tasting, a high-tea-esque tiered display of several different cold and hot delicacies. The main course items are all exquisite, with pastas hearkening back to the Neapolitan tradition (the scialatielli are excellent). I would also recommend the fried calamari, with shrimp and anchovies - this is how the dish should taste and look like, an almost invisible batter that enhances the flavor instead of covering it. If this is not a 5 star restaurant, I don't know what is. The ambience is nice, the service is friendly and attentive, the pricing is reasonable (but no Amex folks), even when you throw in the wine. For a night, forget the steaks and enjoy seafood in its most mouth-watering form.

Campo di' Fiori has its charms and a lot of the food items sold are good, sure, but it's also crowded, and has a lot of tourists pretty much any time of year. But Mercato Trionfale is a different beast. Located a stone's throw away from the Vatican (but in the "wrong direction", away from all the other tourist sites of Rome), it is located in what looks a bit like an industrial hall, and spans a full block. It doesn't look like much, but inside you'll find a fantastic choice of fresh produce, meat, cured products, kitchen wares, fish, fresh pasta, and much, much more. Don't expect any of the vendors to speak anything but Italian (a few do, but most don't), but a bit of pointing will get you a long way. Most vendors are cash-based, so bring lots of euros with you. Mercato Trionfale isn't cheap, generally food ins't super-cheap in Italy. Italian don't eat as well as they do because their food is extremely cheap, but because they are among the countries in the world to spend the largest part of their disposable income on food. Not that it's super expensive, either, but depending on where in the world you're from, you may not find that this place has dirt-cheap items. But it is very, very good. Once you've tried making a humble pasta with a tomato sauce and mozzarella, with all fresh, handmade pasta, fresh tomatoes (make sure you ask the vendor which are best for a sauce, called "sugo" in Italian), you'll never want to go back to anything else. When you're done with your shopping, there are a number of small cafés around the market, that may lack a bit of picturesque-ness, but they make up for it in local charm and €0.80 espressos. If I was to recommend one really Roman experience, especially if you have a vacation home with a kitchen you you can cook, this would be it.

Many of the shops at Mercato Trionfale do not market themselves. In fact, a bunch of them are known by just their stall number. Our favorite was "Alimentari Box 247," Via Andrea Doria entrance, 41 D. Everyone runs to the Testaccio Market when in Rome. I'll take the untouristy Trionfale Market.

Turns out, we were the first patrons when we arrived and were the only ones there for the next 30 min. LOL I believe the hours displayed on their window is 19:30-23:30. We were greeted warmly by a waiter who did not speak English, so an English-speaking waitress tended to us as well. A lot of the menu items had fish and/or shellfish in the dish, but my husband is allergic to anything shellfish. She thought about alternatives and happily suggested a dish off the menu linguini with swordfish (and mentioned whatever seasonings). How sweet! Then for me, she recommended a customer favorite, calamari and fried shrimp. We also ordered caprese and bread for appetizer (bread is not free in some restaurants in Italy like it is in U.S.). Our food was delicious! Bear in mind, my fried shrimp was fried with skin, head, tail, and legs on unlike at US restaurants, so I did a bit of work peeling it. Not sure how the Italians do it (pull off the head and eat everything else like Filipinos do? hehe), but i tried to be discrete peeling my shrimp. LOL It was so delicious - the serving could've been for two, but I ate the whole thing. My husband loved his linguini with swordfish, but I was on the fence about it. I prefer the rings, but this was ALL tiny squids, so I didn't try any. My husband enjoyed as much as he could while still saving room for his pasta and fish entree. I had a mushroom pizza, which was quite good. We were happy to have a non-touristy experience in Rome! On our way out, a young man stopped us to ask about our experience both at the restaurant and in Rome. We assumed he was the son of the owners or some other relative as he was hanging out in the restaurant while we were dining. Nice to know they value the opinions of their diners!
