First I wanna start by saying that this was my FIRST trip to Scotland and I could not imagine…read morehaving stayed at a more perfect place. HARRY POTTER FANS, listen up: This hotel is WALKING DISTANCE from the Harry Potter Bridge here in Glenfinnan. You know the one. FLying car, chamber of secrets, Hogwarts express? Yeah, that's right!! NOT ONLY THAT, but it is right on Lock Shiel which, in addition to being absolutely stunning, is the lake that Hogwarts is on. Compare pictures to this lake to photos from the second task(mermaids) from Goblet of Fire....you will SCREAM! Enough about Harry Potter. This hotel is quaint, homey, and incredibly warm and lively. The entire staff goes above and beyond to make sure that your needs and desires are met. From the included breakfast every morning to the offering of packed lunches for your daily hikes the team here is a cut above the rest. The rooms are large with beautifully updated, modern washrooms and showers. The tea kettles and assortment of coffee and teas(in room) are brilliant and the perfect touch. The main dining area/restaurant is delicious with terrific daily specials. The bar area/casual dining area is just as great and features traditional, Scottish, live music some nights. This place will remain at the TOP of my list not only for myself but for recommendations to anyone that may ask. Thank you to the brilliant team behind this beautiful hotel.

We were in the area for the Loch Fyne Food Fair and it was handy travel wise. We had a very warm welcome from the owners Jenifer and Alastair who are the friendliest people you will meet. The house itself is an elegant Victorian country house with pretty gardens that you can sit outside in, although the weather wouldn't allow it this time. There are splendid views over Loch Fyne to Inverary. Our room was at the front of the house and had a magnificent 4-poster bed and was immaculately decorated. The bathroom was modern and spotless. There is an inviting drawing room that you can use with a fire and glasses for you to have a drink. The breakfast was delicious and we were offered recommendations for restaurants which Jenifer booked for us. The guest house is near to Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Inverary for sightseeing. I would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return again.

LONG, HONEST REVIEW- TLDR, this place is a SCAM and you should spend your hard-earned money…read moreelsewhere. Any positive reviews of this place have to be falsified or are from before the property was repurchased. AVOID IF YOU VALUE YOUR MONEY. We booked 3 rooms at the Islay House in October 2025. It was an expensive booking, which is to be expected given there are very few accommodations in Bridgend and on Islay. Before we checked in, there was a large storm that unfortunately interrupted shipping of gas (necessary for heating) to Islay, which I understand is completely out of their control. However, this resulted in us having NO HEAT and NO HOT WATER for the duration of our stay. Normally, I would write this off and shrug, because it happens. Why the one star review? Because the staff INTENTIONALLY did not disclose to us that there was no hot water at check in, and that we would not have hot water or heat for the duration of our stay. Again, TERRIBLE customer service, but maybe not even worth a review. We were REPEATEDLY assured by staff that we would get a partial refund. REPEATEDLY. We made the reservation through Booking.com so they said we had to file the request through Booking. I asked the staff REPEATEDLY to put this in writing (to ensure an agreement regarding a refund), which they assured me they would do. I had a really nasty feeling that they would not do it but eventually we had to leave for the ferry so we hoped against hope they would do the right thing. We filed the complaint with Booking 10 days ago, and just received word that "we could not come to an agreement with the property regarding a refund", so we are getting nothing back. Absolutely disgraceful and completely disrespectful. I wish I could leave a positive review because there were positives of this property, however such blatant and disgusting SCAMS deserve nothing more than 1 star. Book at your own risk. Will update review if anything changes.

Saving the best for last: quite the awesome bar, fully stocked with local scotch and an incredible on-site restaurant ran by a talented chef. When in Islay, stop by.

We were at the end of a very long trip, a trip that started 4 weeks before at an upscale, boutique…read moreMiami Beach hotel, then 2 weeks in Cunard's Queens Grill, a couple of nights at a very posh London Hotel, a nice place in Edinburgh, a quirky (but great) Portree "guest house," and a couple of nights at a rather fancy "restaurant with rooms" on the Isle of Skye. No place was nicer, no one was more friendly, and no hotel was as warmly welcoming as The Barriemore in Oban. From the jovial fellow doing some outside work who helped us get parked straight and who then got us geographically situated, to Marc who got inside and showed us around, to Jan, who I believe checked us in, everyone was so nice and friendly. We were in Room A which has a bit of an up-charge -- but, if the room is available it's well worth it. Room A even has a writing room/dressing room! The extra large bathroom was well-appointed and clean. Best of all it had a shower stall and not a tub that would require a struggle to get to in and out. On a cold morning you'll especially appreciate the towel warmer. The bedroom was extra large with a king size bed. What made the room extra special however was the two comfortable sitting chairs facing several large windows looking directly out on the Oban Esplanade, the harbor channel and the entire Oban harbor. Enormous ferries regularly barreling up the channel were remarkably near the shore, so close you don't need binoculars to get a good look -- except that binoculars are provided! There's some nice sherry in the room, whisky in the hallway and coffee equipment with all the necessary supplies in the room -- plus some extra treats. The breakfast room was bright, cheery and well decorated. There's a nice cereal/fruit/yogurt buffet plus a menu for table-served, cooked-to-order items, including, of course, a full Scottish breakfast. My scrambled eggs with 3 sausages were well-cooked and delicious. I especially liked the unusual (to us, anyways) berry compote (?). The Barriemore is at the very end of the Oban Esplanade meaning it's a 10-15 mins. Walk down to the restaurants and shops. But especially if you've been on the road a bit too long, or if for any reason you need a comfortable and friendly respite, the walk is definitely worth it.
