Very good hotel in the centre of Chester. You can't fault the individuality of the hotel. The…read moredesign features of the public areas and rooms shows so much imagination and style and clearly the hotel is extremely popular with the younger generation.  The hotel has a lovely outside courtyard area popular with drinkers and smokers alike. At around 11pm someone hits the 'off' switch and the courtyard becomes an area of serenity and calm, so as not to disturb guests and local residents.  So far so good, we arrived on a Friday afternoon at around 5pm. There had been a maintenance issue in an adjoining room so we were unable to use our room. At this point in my opinion it would have been a nice gesture for the hotel to maybe offer us a complimentary drink or two?  The room rate is not cheap, nor are the bar prices so although the hotel clearly has a captive audience with considerable disposable income, it's the little things that count in my opinion.  When we did get to our room there was a rather unpleasant odour which did eventually clear with the aid of an electric fan. The hotel has free wifi although this didn't seem to work in our 3rd floor room.  I was also impressed with the polished polite young waiter/waitress staff who seemed to be doing their jobs with pride. Special mention to Tom who served us drinks in the evening.  Discounted parking is available at the nearby NCP car park, which is secured between 11pm and 7am.

But, when you do put the effort in to finding that one thing you are striving for, it just makes the end result so much more satisfying. And after years of searching for a good, unique, hangout in Chester, I've finally found one. Tucked away behind beautiful architecture, it's a place reminiscent of a magical building out of a story book. Oddfellows isn't your typical bar/restaurant. It's not one of these five pounds beer and burger chain establishments, nor is it the latest minimalist trendy club. It sits quite happily in between these things, making for a slightly schizophrenic experience, it doesn't seem to know exactly what it is. However, this only adds to the charm. There's no other place like Oddfellows, which boasts a hotel, two restaurants and a bar area, as well as a beautiful outside garden. Some frankly bizarre decor adds to the whole experience; on your journey from the front door to the back door you will see a large pig statue, an upside down table stuck on the ceiling and a stags head on the wall wearing a rather fetching hat. The spasmodic approach to decor only serves to embellish just how unique this place is. The staff don't let the place down either, always polite and friendly and always available. The food is gorgeous too, I only ordered a sandwich but when it arrived it was more like a doorstop. Very reasonably priced too. So yes, Oddfellows, it's a brilliant place, so full of character. Search it out, enjoy it, love it.

Everyone else seemed to get waited on, but me, so I went up to the bar to order. The waitress seemed to be stressed out with the growing number of customers coming in and couldn't seem to keep up. The bartender seemed very disinterested in everything going on. I decided on the House Salad to start with and then the Slow-Roast Free Range Pork Baguette. My starter ended up coming out with my sandwich instead and it took a very long time for the food to come out in the first place. The salad only had one sun-blushed tomato, and the dressing didn't taste like a lemon dressing at all, in fact I would say that it was a pesto dressing. I did like the sliced bits of green onion in it though. The Pork baguette did not come with apple chutney, stuffing, or piccalilli like the menu said, however the pork itself was some of the best roasted pork I have had...it was juicy and flavourful...not dried out and bland. The chips could've been in the fryer a little longer, but I was in a rush otherwise the sandwich would've been sent back. If it wasn't for the amazing pork...I would've given this place a one-star because it was the only saving grace of the entire experience.

Another place I thought I had reviewed but obviously not…read more. Set next to another favourite pub of mine (brewery tap) lies this gem.. The last time i came here they offered large tasty pies like the Pietanic and offered no card payments.. their menu has now changed..no pies :( Anyway this is full of character..with low lying beams..dark, curious and stunning windows. Anyway we retreated back here after finding our favourite restaurant fully booked. The menu is limited with one main fish dish and just one veggie one? Two steak salads were ordered to begin. Comparing this to Solitas I thought it was passable. I Prefer my steak still mooing this was well done and a tad chewy and the salad leaves covered in olive oil.. it was okay for the price. Mains :I fancied some traditional fish and chips..my dad selected the chicken burger . Presentation was good and my haddock looked like a battered shark...huge!! Perched on top of tasty homemade chips and perfect mushy peas. My dad loved his chicken burger stating it was fresh and all homemade. Desserts again were limited.. I had a Eton mess..really tasty bit pricey for what it was..my dad a large slab of sticky toffee cake.. Overall this is a hidden a gem and a good place to retreat when it's busy..with friendly staff, limited but tasty approved food.. two starters, mains, desserts and two round of drinks came to 50 quid..not bad..
