The Tavern is a small chain of 3 restaurants across tthe North West, with 2 in Liverpool. The restaurant situated on Smithdown Road is excellent! The atmosphere is fab, with a dark and cosy, candlelit mood, it is perfect for an evening meal. The walls are decorated with old photos and pieces of art that you and your party are bound to talk about. The food is always of an excellent standard and not bad for the price. As a Mexican restaurant, you can expect to find anything from fajitas, enchiladas through to chicken burgers and bbq ribs. I strongly recommend the specials that the waiter suggests as I do, and have never been disappointed. The popcorn chicken starter is also one to watch out for! A brunch menu has been a successful idea at the Tavern, ranging from an all American breakfast through to a Mexican breakfast for around £6. This is available only at the weekends as far as I know, but they are willing to expand onto further days with enough support. Free coffee and tea is available for the whole time you are there. The only downside is that due to the popularlity of brunch, you can often wait for over an hour for a table as they don't take bookings. Overall, I love this place, and if I'm ever stuck for anywhere to go to eat, The Tavern is always my first choice.

The Tavern is one of those places that has plenty of atmosphere to compensate for the menu and staff. I have never come here and found the staff helpful or pleasant - we all know that restaurant work can be tiring and irritating but really? do we need to know? The food is hearty, warm American/Mexican style barbecue food with plenty of ribs, nachos, chillis and platters. It isn't the best food I've ever had but it's not really about the quality here, more the quantity so it's the type of place to bring the kids for some fun finger food and there is usually plenty of them running around which can often spoil the dark, candlelit ambience for any couples heading here for a romantic evening. The breakfasts here are very popular so come along early or book but once here the menu is very accomodating for swapping and changing any of the bits you do or don't like.

The Tavern must have been here about 20 years and has a warm and comfortable feel - even if the food is comfort food. It is owned and run by an American family. We enjoyed the visit and had no complaints about the service or the servers attitude. I'm not really into margarita's but being a Mexican restaurant, they are a popular choice here. I'm always suprised there are not more Mexican style restaurants around. Next to Japanese, it my favourite style of food thats so tasty and not unhealthy. The Tavern has some good offers including a kids eat free policy which is always a winner.

This place looks fab and is always popular, now I see why. We got a 2-course meal for 13.95 and our first drink free which was a pleasant surprise. The chicken wings were tasty - I forgot to ask for spicy blue cheese so just had BBQ sauce. The burger I had was good and you could choose between a jacket potato, fries or wedges. They also had some grilled chicken and other healthier options.

It's probably why you're given a roll of kitchen of roll instead of napkins when you sit down. When we first arrived it was queued out the door, ok it's a small entrance way but that still meant there was at least a dozen people ahead of us. Thankfully we were quickly ushered inside and while we still had a 15 minute wait for a table for 4, and we could spend that time at the bar. The bar has a decent selection of the usual favourites. It's a bit short on good beer/ale but does have Brooklyn larger on draught. They also have their very own larger, which to be honest was unimpressive. It tasted very weak with no strong flavours and a distinct lack of hops. I would describe it like sex in a canoe, f**king close to water. If you're a Bud or Coors lite drinker you'll likely enjoy it. But you don't come here for the booze. The burger menu was impressive, the smallest they do is a double and every burger comes with a long list of toppings. Some crowd pleasures feature, candied bacon, pepper jack cheese, BBQ onions, but there are also some weird and wonderful additions such as crunchy pretzels, frazzles (yes the crisps!) and even beerios, which are some sort of beer infused cheerios, they only appear on their breakfast burger. I had the river phoenix, a double cheese burger with bacon, BBQ onions, chipotle sauce, baconaise and the aforementioned frazzles. The burger was delicious, the meat was good quality and well cooked, although it did get lost under the vast amount of different toppings. As sides we had their chilli cheese fries and suicide wings. The fries were excellent, a mixture of regular and sweet potato fries. They were cut to just the right thickness and had a nice crunch while still being fluffy on the inside. There wasn't quite as much chilli as I'd have liked but other than that the fries were perfect. However I was disappointed in the suicide wings. I'm a big hot sauce fan and they were pretty mild. I would have liked for them to have been a lot hotter. I was expecting ghost pepper heat and only got Jalapeño. It's not full waiter service as you do have to order and pay at the bar. But the staff were pleasant and the queues were short so I didn't mind. Our four burgers (3 doubles and a triple), two portions of fries and a portion of wings came to a very reasonable £40.

No table service - this a DIY venue but worth the trip!

Between here and the Art's Club down the road, I'm not sure what the decision rested on - our previous experience or the fact they have duck fries... The menu remains unchanged from our last visit, though obviously this time we were visiting for lunch. And man what a lunch! There were some big decisions to be made (what IS pepper siu mai? Can we also fit BBQ brisket beans?) but we eventually landed upon our final choices: CF BLT, the grilled cheese, chilli cheese fries, josper grilled corn, hot chicken wings and corn dogs. Everything comes on a large sharing tray for that authentic, messy food experience. We quickly got stuck in and some firm favourites appeared. The cheese on the grilled cheese simply cannot be faulted! It's the kind of cheese that never stopped coming and you can feel clogging your arteries but you don't care because it's just that good. The chilli cheese fries were also a popular choice, with some real heat in the meat and a slightly sweet dipping gravy. The chicken wings were the most disappointing for me as, although they were quite hot in taste at first, as soon as they cooled down the spice completely went. The chicken was moist but had very little flavour as a meat. Again, the corn dogs were tasty, but nothing spectacular on this occasion. Service was really friendly throughout, casual but attentive, and we rolled out feeling totally content. What do I have left to try here? Well, I've seen the Sunday roast and it looks fantastic, and the Daiquiri & Dim Sum Tuesday offer sounds like quite the treat...

There's not a massive choice of drinks, but enough to cater for everyone. The music ranges from 60s onwards, and there is a jukebox that everyone seems to make use of, as well as some old fashioned sweet and nut machines - 20p for a handful of pistachios and then you can cause murder throwing the shells at people!
