An exceptionally beautiful place to sample wine and enjoy an afternoon. Melville has a smallish indoor tasting room, but the place to sit is outside. There are arbors covered with wisteria, Adirondack chairs, and birds and butterflies everywhere. I enjoyed a glass of rose and a snack on the lawn while my husband painted the rows of wine grapes right beside me. We were there in late June, but apparently the fall colors are spectacular. I felt the wine price per glass was reasonable for the quality. The snacks are pricy, but i believe you can bring your own. We are members and we love the nice outdoor space. We love to bring our fur baby and our niece. They love the outdoor space. Also love the Pinot Noir here. They also sell snacks to have with your pairing / wine. Inside space is limited though. But there are a lot of shaded area outdoors. read more

I've been curious to try this spot bc it was recommended by couple of people. Ambiance was nice outside the patio & weather was beautiful so we sat outside for our tasting. Rarely do I write bad reviews but sadly, I didn't think the wines were anything special. The tasting fee for both mixed whites/reds & all reds were pretty steep compared to other good wineries I've been to. The customer service was mediocre. There were 2 guys who served my husband & I. The first guy didn't seem enjoy his job. He had a poker face & wasn't that friendly. The 2nd guy was friendlier but both were stingy with their pours & didn't go above & beyond to sell us their wines. Let alone I had to ask if we could revisit one of the wines at the end of our tasting & he says they don't usually let customers revisit bc they were about close but he will only do this bc there were other customers still finishing up their tasting. He clearly mentioned this twice which made me feel uncomfortable & I even apologized. Come on now, who's the customer here? You're better off going to Babcock, Alma Rosa, & Kaena (in Solvang). All 3 of these wineries had better wines & the price was cheaper. Customer service was excellent, they gave us bigger pours, & they all asked if we wanted to revisit any of the wines. They were just more passionate & enthusiastic about the wines they poured. I won't be coming back here. read more

The wine experience at Melville is unlike anywhere else in Santa Ynez Valley. We felt like we were enjoying wine at a Tuscan Villa. The rosé is crisp and refreshing - perfect for a sunny afternoon. There is plenty of outdoor seating with gorgeous views from every spot. Maria helped us; she is new to Melville but already very knowledgeable about their wine and estate. The Melville Buellton Vineyard and Winery is beautiful and worth the visit for the wine and the venue. The outdoor space has many tables and chairs to relax with groups of up to 8ppl. You are surrounded by grape vines and lavender bushes. The view is just wonderful and the staff is very friendly and come out to the tables out on the grassy area. There is an indoor wine tasting space and nice interior restrooms. We sipped on a couple bottles of Rose. If you arrive after 4pm you cannot order a tasting but only a glass of wine and wine bottles. Wayne and I haven't visited in a long time and we sure are glad we made the stop before our way home. Our friends had never been there before and throughly enjoyed themselves as well! read more

Melville exceeded our expectations - what a beautiful place!! We did a tour of the winery and learned all about the property and how the wine is made. We were able to see inside of the wine library, and even saw some of the grapes during the fermentation process. Cosmo was an amazing guide, excellent service!! We were able to taste about 7-8 different wines and they were all fantastic. I don't typically like Chardonnay or Rose, but these two from Melville were delicious - we even ended up buying a bottle of the Rose. Fabulous outdoor seating and solid pinots. Was recommended this winery by a few people, so decided to squeeze in a tasting just before closing on a Thursday afternoon. We sat outside and enjoyed the shade of their trellis, enjoying 360 views of the vines. I was impressed with their chardonnay, it was bright, light and had subtle notes of vanilla (as opposed to the traditional heavy oak/butter notes you tend to get with CA chardonnays). We ended up purchasing 2 of their pinots so we could do a side by side tasting at home! Cute spot to stop by if you're in Lompoc. read more

My husband and I make it a yearly tradition to visit this great winery. When we first heard of it, we were exploring the town celebrating our wedding anniversary and we were referred to this winery. We have been coming nearly every year to visit! We love the atmosphere, the great customer service, the girl who took great care of us was awesome. I can't recall her name but she was really nice curly hair and she told us she danced contemporary dance. We always receive great service and accommodation whenever we visit. We stopped over at Melville Winery to kill some time before dinner. So, it was later in the afternoon. We had never been there. We hoped we could still get a tasting and enjoy the pretty grounds for a little while. As we walked in, Ryann welcomed us with a smile and a hospitable attitude (even that late in the day). She didn't rush us at all and in fact visited with us for a bit. She knew her wines and even shared some information about the surrounding areas. We enjoyed the tasting and bought three bottles upon our departure. If you happen to stop in at Melville, ask for Ryann. She will definitely make your visit positively memorable! read more

We came to enjoy a tasting at our favorite Santa Rita Hills winery during COVID. Tastings are by reservation only at this time. They are outside only but still great. Some new Adirondack chairs were added so you can enjoy your wine both on picnic table or those comfy chairs. The atmosphere and service were fantastic. We hope to visit again soon. read more

Super great private tasting experience! Our tasting included a hike through the vineyards, where we tasted wine in the actual vineyard where the grapes are grown. Incredible! Then we headed back for a tasting in the "tasting room" in back, and absolutely loved the wines. We ended with a quick tour of the barrel room and fermenting areas, which was a fun education in winemaking. Highly recommended! read more

Of course the tasting was amazing but Christina's hospitality was EXEMPLARY as the outdoor tasting area filled up quickly. We visited this afternoon- our 1st time out since the pandemic & since cancer treatment. Our "host" who wearing a ball cap & bragging his relative was the CFO was LESS than professional or helpful. We had ?s about the wine & he kept saying "I have to run around". Our tasting of 5 wines lasted over 3 hrs so we spent a lot of time waiting for him. In fact, we had a longer conversation with another host - Ethan - who was quite pleasant! We were interested in purchasing the 2020 Pinot to comp our tasting fees. He was SO difficult that we just PD the fee & bought nothing. I spoke to Val hoping she'd be interested in why we were disgruntled, leaving w/o purchasing any wine & I immediately understood this new negative culture, perhaps some entitlement mentality & a CLEAR change from the tasting room of the past. She was RUDE! We've been in the area since Thursday & have spent close to $2000 on wine. We used to LOVE coming to Melville! Sadly we will not return. Went on a wine tour with a friend and out of the four wineries, this one was the best. I'm terrible with names but our wine expert was a blonde female physician who really knew her stuff and was really passionate about all the details. She provided the most comprehensive while also entertaining explanation about the process, how to taste and smell the wine and the science behind it all. I really enjoyed it because it was easy to learn and really informative. The other wineries just filled your glass and left you to your own devices. We were able to check out the vineyards, the machinery that processed the grapes and the keg storage in the back. Real interesting stuff. I'm no expert but their wine selection was pretty good too. read more

Tried the small lot tasting which included 3 Pinot noirs with whole cluster fermentation. Very good complexity and Anna's was smoothest and savory. The estate Syrah is very good and smooth blend of 7 clones with a nice peppery finish. I was also able to taste the estate Pinot which had 17 clones blended. We had a lovely time at the Melville estate. There was ample seating outside, and while it was cold, it was spaced nicely from other tables and the views were wonderful. You could see the changing leave colors of the vines while sipping on wine. We ended up ordering a bottle and not the tasting because they mentioned they were understaffed. We figured it would be nicer to sip on our wines without having the song and dance of small pours and waiting lengthy amount of times for each tasting. The estate Pinot 2018 was delicious a d made for an enjoyable experience. The grounds and landscaping are breathtaking and quaint at the same time. I visited Melville today and spent 2+ hours relaxing on their spacious patio, sipping awesome wines and nibbling on tasty snacks from their food menu. They have expansive grounds with shaded tables under wind-proof sun umbrellas. It was sunny, 72 degrees with a light breeze - optimal weather for late summer. The tasting room manager, Nicole, spent quality time bringing me up to speed on the various aspects of this 140+ acre vineyard. Had a really lovely experience here! Came to the winery for a mom and daughter weekend and their outdoor area was so nice and it felt really COVID friendly. Cassie served us our tasting and she was so knowledgeable, friendly, and made the experience so great! We definitely want to come back because she provided such amazing service and she also recommended and made a reservation for us at a nearby restaurant. The Chardonnay was our favorite from the tasting and we also bought a bottle of the Emery that also tasted great and had a beautiful story behind the wine. The dignity is in leisure -- Herman Melville Better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian -- Herman Melville Too bad ole Herman "the Whale is a symbol of an indifferent Universe" Melville never met a drunk wino. He may have changed that second phrase a bit ;) I cannot believe I forgot to review Melville Vineyards! I have been coming here off and on for at least 10 years back when they were rightfully named a cutting-edge, winery to watch in the Santa Barbara Wine Country. I love some of the single vineyard Pinots like Terraces, Carries (now called Block M) and the stainless steel chardonnay Inox. What really makes them a great winery though is that their entry level wines: Pinot Estate & Verna's, Chardonnay Estate and Verna's, Syrah, and Viognier (all under $25.00 at wine shops) are year in year out some of the best wines in their price point in California. The Viognier especially is one of my favorites of that varietal and in the best years is almost my house white. My most recent visit was in March after the Zotavich open house event. I had a lovely tasting, spending most of my time outside, and all of the wines were very good with the Block M being the best of the bunch (although the Terraces was excellent too). I love my leisure time and am definitely in the camp of working to live, not living to work. One of my favorite activities is wine tasting and when I'm vacationing in SB Wine Country this is a must stop and should be on anyone's list of places to stop in the area. However, one caveat. It is a big, beautiful winery with Babcock adjacent so they do get large crowds on the weekends. I just missed a bridal shower party so my tasting experience was much nicer than if I had arrived 30 minutes earlier. Paul F is right. Large groups can ruin the experience here so try and go when it is less crowded. Otherwise, highly recommended and bring a picnic if the weather is nice! read more
