    Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery

    Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery

Although this is listed on Yelp as "Wyoming State Government", and I supposed it is, in a way, this…read morelocation is that of the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery. The only government here, is the land in which these military veterans have found their final home. Because Wyoming had no national cemetery until recently, this state veteran's cemetery is huge. It's set on a hill, where you can look down to the city. It's an interesting perspective. Oregon Trail is a VA Grant-funded cemetery, but it is managed by the state and brings a personal touch. Unlike the national cemetery down not far away, this cemetery doesn't have the white headstones, but rather in-ground markers that make it easier to maintain the property, I suppose, but makes you less cognizant of the size. Still, on Memorial Day, there are the flags, lining the grounds and giving you the full sense of what these military cemeteries represent. The decorations left by friends and families is always equal parts fascinating and sad -- pictures, poems, personal notes. On the grounds, there's a chapel and a patio area where the services are held, no graveside services here, but burials are still with full military honors during the week. As expected, the columbarium, often a focal--point, was covered with flowers, pictures, tokens, and mementos and because they are often placed right next to another one, it's overwhelming. On the weekend I visited, just as with any military cemetery, there were streams of people coming and going even during the early hours of the day. It's good to know that people don't forget.
