I hoped to like the park more than I did though. There was a lot of unfinished construction going on and sadly every single bench either had a load of dirt on it or weird unidentifiable growths .... The walking path was nice as a portion of it is right next to the river and there were plenty of different trees, plants and flowering bushes. We were able to catch a nice sunset which made up for the yucky benches and construction too. Probably won't come back but it served its purpose.

First, the park probably has the LARGEST playground I've everrrrrr seen at a public park with multiple playgrounds WITHIN the playground itself. As you can imagine, it gets quite busy on nice weekend days. Surrounding the playground are many pavilions and picnic tables for those that want to have BBQs or large gatherings, which can be had with a permit. In addition to one of the best park playgrounds, the Bergen County Zoo resides inside of the park, which is free to EVERYONE during the colder months of the year. During the warmer months, there's a small fee for Bergen County residents and non-residents. If that's not enough, there is a miniature train ride that takes people around the entire park for a small fee. And, let me tell you first hand that the train ride is actually quite long at 5-7 minutes. Nearby, there is also a carousel that you can ride on for a fee. And, guess what?? There's even more! There is a barn with ponies that let's people ride the ponies for a fee as well. There are also jogging, walking and biking paths too along with a few tennis courts. Besides all of the permanent amenities, there are also events during different times of the year including the Winter Wonderland, which ... surprise, surprise ... takes place during the winter months. If you're worried about parking, no sweat, there are multiple large lots inside of the park, so once you arrive you can start your day asap. Like I said, DEFINITELY one of the best public parks in all of NJ.

My coworker told me that it's possible to walk the entire expanse of the park by connected paths. There is a path that begins at Railroad Avenue, winds along the river for about a mile, and then links to a footbridge that will take you towards the Otto Pehle Area (Fairlawn). Before the footbridge, you'll see a baseball field, tennis courts, areas with picnic tables, and a gazebo. You walk under the Garden State Parkway (you can see the GSP signs for exits 157 and 159 from the path) if you keep heading north. The paths here are pretty wide, so there is ample room for walkers, joggers/runners, dog walkers, skaters, bicyclists, etc - all of whom i saw this weekend despite it still being February with brisk, chilly winter weather. The trails are free to enter but they do request for volunteer donation for non members. Different tiers of annul membership available to purchase at main office that comes with some wonderful perks, such as free access to trails and special events. The main office also has some of the exhibition items like insect box and turtle box. Outside the office there's also bird and butterfly cages. We went to the center for our daughter to participate in butterfly feeding event. Upon arrival we found out we had to buy the tickets for one of the two scheduled events. Luckily there were slots available to the second event on the day. The ticket was reasonably cheap, only $8. It also came with an additional bird's exhibition that took place right in front of office deck. All the stuff members were very friendly, informative and interactive. We spent wonderful couple of hours here on beautiful warm summer day.

New Bridge was a prosperous mill hamlet centered around a bridge strategically placed at the narrows of the Hackensack River. It served as a battleground, fort, encampment ground, military headquarters, and intelligence-gathering post in every year of the American Revolutionary War. We arrived a bit early and walked around the grounds which contained three 18th century homes. We met James Smith one of the reenactors gave us some fascinating history about the location. The most famous building is called the Steuben House . It was here that General Washington made the house his headquarters for 10 days in 1780. In 1783 as a thank you, the State of New Jersey presented this confiscated house to Major-General Baron von Steuben. The other buildings on site were Campbell-Christie House and Demarest House. For those Revolutionary War buff in NJ, this place would be worth a visit as they have several events through the year.
