I have been a certified massage practitioner for 25 years, but retired for 10. I'm very picky and typically am not completely satisfied with massage therapy, since I practiced many modalities. Today I received the best Swedish massage I have ever experienced from Jenifer John's at Mendocino Massage. I thought about it for a very long time before writing this review. I have gotten massages from all over the world, hotels, studios etc. I was going to get a massage with another Ayurvedic place but unfortunately she was going to be out of town that weekend. The most disappointing moment that could ever happen on a trip was you spent time and money on a service and leaving felt like you just wasted your time and money. I did a whole afternoon of research and also reaching out to private therapists to hopefully find the one who can provide the most therapeutic massage to me. I ended up selecting Mendocino massage because of its high rating on Yelp and also did some digging in the reviews. Phil used this very unique way of rocking and shaking every part of your body and he stated he had been a therapist for 25 years + . I was looking for a firm hand technique to help me smooth out my knots and tension. I even booked the ultimate back experience because I don't want them to be wasting my time focusing on my limb. He still did his own thing and did a whole body massage rather than spending the time and focusing on my neck and back. For anyone who's looking, this dynamic wave therapy was certainly not my cup of tea. The work felt very superficial. On top of that I was told to "cooperate" during the massage which I understood what he meant by consciously relax my muscles but if I could do that on my own I would not come to this massage. I went here for a massage - which was incredibly expensive. When I arrived I realized that the website is an incredibly poor representation of the business. The website makes the business seems like a spa, when in reality the interior of the business feels like an old office building that is in need of love and tending. During the massage I wondered if the masseuse had any professional training at all - the massage did not feel intuitive at all and did not do anything for me in term of physical relaxation. I actually felt frustrated and ungrounded leaving this experience... it was one of the most expensive massages I have ever had and also one of the worst. read more

Mendocino Massage was the best! My husband and I both got massages here (he got a deep tissue and I got a prenatal massage after clearing it with my doctor). Jenifer was the one who helped us both and she was so great! She took the time to speak to us before the massage started, asked about any specific pain points and asked me positions I was and was not comfortable in with my belly. You can tell she really knows what she's doing. The location was right down the street from our B&B, so clean and quiet (my husband didn't even hear the fire station alarm that went off during his massage down the street which is hard to miss. if you know, you know). Warm blankets and clothes. Beautiful lotions and oils and hands. The setting is rustic hippie type setting but it works. 5 stars for the massage. 4 for the location as we heard a bit of road noise and next door neighbor noise. A friend and I decided to have a "spa day" and found an open couples appointment at Mendocino Massage. Booking the appointment was a pain, as they use a call service and the operator knows nothing about the actual business, employees or amenities. We arrived, and two lovely, pleasant ladies greeted us. Both wearing masks, and following CDC guidelines. We started our 90 minute tandem session, and my friend requested deep disuse, (that turned out to be +$30 and we found out after. My masseuse was Cynthia, hers was Lisa. Cynthia was lovely, kind, and warm hearted. I was hoping for just a relaxing massage, and told her that I had carpal tunnel issues. She found a tight spot, and went to serious work at one point drawing tears from my eyes as I couldn't handle the sharp pain. I have to say the massage was so painful- maybe I'm overly sensitive? It was more "body work" to work through all my knots and tight spots. I was just in agony and kept asking for "a little lighter on the pressure please" just so I could make it through. My friend was slightly annoyed as Lisa kept stopping the massage to excuse herself, get things, change the lighting... etc. Her deep tissue massage was so painful, we were both so grateful to be done. Not a moment of the actual massage was relaxing, and we are both so sore after our experience. When I got home I told my husband about our experience, and he sweetly went to put his arm around me and in winced in pain. It's going to take me days to recover. Ouch. If you enjoy a deep disuse borderline meat tenderizing experience- this is your place! It was clean, had great house blend essential oils, and friendly staff. The heated massage beds were especially nice. I was just hoping to find a gentle, relaxing experience and this was not it. I learned a lesson about communicating ahead of time to my masseur. "Gentle and relaxing" need to be said if wished for. It was not a $400+ experience. read more

Very awkward moment when, not thinking much about it (especially given the signs on the door that said something along "masks not required for vaccinated persons"), I assured my massage therapist that I was fully vaccinated. He responded, "well, I'm not..." So - you're not following the county, state, and CDC rules?! I didn't even bother with the attempt at a conversation: just put on my clothes and left. My friend and I had massages at Mendocino Massage last Tuesday. My masseuse was excellent and observed all masking requirements. My friend's massage therapist took off her mask and admitted during the session that she had not been vaccinated. Appalling behavior that probably put us at risk, even though we have been vaccinated against COVID. Difficult to believe that this business employs people who are not vaccinated when they are in contact with the public every day. read more

My husband and I came here during our anniversary getaway. The weather was pretty rainy and cold outside, but inside was a relaxing and warm haven. This was our first couples massage and my husband does not do massages often, so I was nervous mostly for him because he is sensitive with people touching him. I was incredibly pleased with the professionalism and calm air from our massage therapists. The massage I received melted my stresses away and I felt comfortable communicating to my therapist what I needed. I was very happy my husband also felt comfortable and rejuvenated afterwards. My fiance and I booked the tandem couples massage, which was a little difficult to specify on the reservation site because there's no explicit option for tandem massages. No worries, I included it in the notes for my reservation. Our massage was in a cute little gazebo that was nice and quiet and appropriately warm for a chilly November day. My masseuse didn't ask if there were any problem areas I'd like her to focus on, and being bashful about being a demanding customer, I didn't ask. I could have used a bit more pressure on my back but I guess since I wasn't offered to request anything mid massage, I didn't. I was a little nervous because I'm not always comfortable with male massage therapists, but as soon as we started he set me at ease by asking me to let him know if anything was uncomfortable. He really seemed to be tuned into what my body needed. He did some techniques that I've never seen anyone else use and they got EXACTLY where I needed it (shoulder blades and neck.) My boyfriend and I got tandem 60 minute massages from Phil and Katie. The massages were great! We felt so relaxed afterwards. Loved the aromatherapy, the building, and the massages. Katie did mine and everything was great but my favorite parts were the head massage and the hot towel under my neck. The only thing I disliked about this place (which wasn't a huge issue) is lighting. The room was very bright - definitely prefer a darker room. Overall great experience! What better way to live through a mini vacation than by getting a massage? I was glad to find a reasonably affordable massage place RIGHT in the village a very short walk from my B&B. $75 for an hour long "Mendocino Massage" which was stronger than a Swedish but lighter than a deep tissue. Perfect! I was able to call at 3:30pm on a Tuesday and get in by 4:45pm (would have been 4:30 but my therapist had a problem getting to her keys to the studio). Normally they ask for 1 hour's notice. There doesn't appear to be anyone manning the desk at the shop - so walk ins are out of the question. But stroll past it (it's just down the street from MacCallum House) and there are pamphlets in a box and appointment instructions with a phone number listed out on the door. Easy-peasy. I always worry a bit when I meet my massage therapist and she's a thin, gentle looking girl. Amy gave me that upon first impression. First off - I want my therapist to be big and strong in order to give me a good massage and Second - I want my therapist to be bigger than me so that I don't feel like they're thinking "dang this chick's got a lot of back-fat" the whole time they're massaging me. ;) Now it's highly possible Amy still thought I had a lot of back fat but she WAS NOT WEAK. My husband bought me a massage last year while we were in Mendo. Long story short, the man did some strange range of motion (I did not ask for) and my radial nerve was strained. Within 15 min after the massage my shoulder blade began to ache and burn. It hurt constantly; I could sleep the pin was so bad. After multiple visits to the doctor and several months in physical therapy I only have pain there sometimes. Prior to this massage I had no history of shoulder injury. I just wanted the knots worked out if my neck. That is what I asked for, but he did his own thing instead; he never even addressed my neck. I should have spoke up, but I was trying to be nice. I came here during Covid 19 while getting away from the craziness of the Bay Area. The business was perfectly following Covid guidelines and felt extremely clean and safe. Therapists and reception staff wore masks and face shields the entire time. I had a deep tissue massage with Phillip. Phillip was one of the most thorough massage therapists I've ever had. He was extremely knowledgeable about anatomy and how to relax my extremely tense muscles. I am a sports medicine physician, so I appreciate when massage therapists know anatomy and provide more effective results than someone just beating you up. Eh, it was ok. Any massage is better than no massage at all, right? But it was just odd from the beginning. First, the booking company when you call is in the mid-west, so they are unable to answer any informational questions about the place or the masseuses that work there. So how do you choose who to make an appointment with? I went to the website & selected one who specialized in "deep tissue" for an extra $10. Next, for a cool coastal town it was crazy hot & stuffy inside, uncomfortably so, to the point that I was sweating. They cracked the door which just let in the unrelaxing sounds of people & cars. Lastly, I can assure you that no "deep tissue" was received, and then I was charged $15 extra not $10. The massage was just weird! I asked for a deep tissue back & neck massage & instead received light fingertips on my feet & was asked to "open up let me inside to become one". Then full body shaking & contorting. WTH? Ok, you can believe in your homeopathic spiritual voodoo, whatever floats your boat; I paid for a DEEP TISSUE massage. If you suffer from early ARTHRITIS in your hands, or SCIATICA (so painful that I could not roll over in bed), then ask for PHIL. Not only is he a body whisperer, he finds the EXACT spots that will provide relief. PLUS, he suggested the "turning or Whirling Dervish exercise", which you stand up straight, arms extended outward with palms up, and pick a spot in the room as north. Then you rotate around (i went counter clockwise) staying focused on one palm and count 30 rotations against the spot / object in the room. Go slowly b/c you will get dizzy -- but OMG! In 4 days, I noticed even MORE relief. We went for a couples massage on a Monday, sidestepping the pricier massage at the we-got-a-deal-on-it resort we were staying at. I should mention at some point that the place we are staying at threatens to sue you if you write a bad review about them, but there's no need - it's a fine place to stay in Mendocino. :-) Still, the place we are staying at is not super Yelp friendly. The massage was outstanding. Jen was very thorough, and the Swedish-style massage I got relaxed my muscles, one by one. She took care of a few problem areas, and the couples massage we got out in the gazebo felt somewhat close to nature. Getting away from the city to Mendocino to relax isn't truly complete without a good massage. The prices are reasonable here and the quality is great! read more
