FANTASTIC LYS! Oh how I would love for this to be MY local yarn shop! First off - tons and tons and tons of stuff. Everything you could need for knitting (or crocheting). On top of having everything you could need - the owner/woman working the day we went (Tuesday morning) was super friendly. Not at all stuck up and completely helpful if you need help while laying off if you don't. They had sales bins (20% and 50%) they had shelves of yarn that reached the ceilings in 4 different rooms of the shop. They had an entire Rowan section. Tons of Berroco. Some Debbie Bliss (yarn and a good selection of books). Noro. Manos del Uruguay. Nashua. A few finished objects littering the store. There was even a substantial selection of books and magazines and patterns off in yet ANOTHER side room. GREAT place. We were really impressed! read more

It's been almost a month since I visited the Mendocino Yarn Shop, and I can't stop thinking of what a wonderful place it is. The owner was very friendly and helped me with all my questions, and I had a lot of them. I have always used big box yarns, so this was my special birthday treat. I can't say enough of how the owner made it a beautiful and happy experience for me. My husband was glad that they had comfortable "husband" chairs while he waited. read more

I am irritated, here I read all of these great reviews and when I set foot into this store I did not even get acknowledged by the sales person. Here I was looking at the fabulous selection of yarns since I just started knitting, ready to be tempted and to spend money but instead I was being totally ignored. The sales person was on the phone when I walked in, there was no eye contact, no hello, no "I will be with you in a minute" ....not even a little wave in my direction...I was the only customer in the store. She looked at me, turned away and walked into the back section of the store, returned, after a few minutes, still on the phone, still no attempt to acknowledge me. I don't think I am being too picky, that was just rude in my opinion, I left with my money still in my wallet, ready to spend at a friendlier place. read more

Did the pearly gates of Heaven just open and let me in?? I do believe they did! As soon as I stepped in the doors of the Mendocino Yarn Shop I was in heaven! I was greeted kindly by two ladies running the shop who so graciously helped me navigate the large store. I especially appreciated the extra assistance in guiding me towards sale items. From there I leisurely meandered through the shop, euphorically taking in the sights, smells and feel of all the exquisite yarn! And just when I think I am crazy, the gal running the business comes up to me and shares in my euphoric moment over the perfectly delightful yarn. So, you ask, what is so great about this shop? Well, let's begin with floor to ceiling shelves upon shelves, upon shelves of yarn. All very neatly organized and displayed. The next thing I really enjoyed was seeing where all the yarn was made (printed on the label). I didn't see one "Made in China" tag on anything (though I believe that gals said there are a few Chinese brands in the store). There were so many different weights of yarn in so many varieties of materials. Cotton, cotton blends, organic yarns, linen yarn, bamboo blends, wool and wool blends in all different weights and colors! Truly the best collection of fine yarns I have ever found. What's even better was their prices! All the yarns were very reasonably priced. Towards the back of the shop there are many knitting and crocheting books. I found a few I had never seen before that had patterns for the most beautiful women's wear. I didn't even look at the price, I knew I had to have it! I am so glad I did because I am working on a sweater now with one of those patterns and I am loving it!! At the front of the shop was a table and chairs where customers where coming in and getting assistance with their projects. I thought that was real neat and I love when yarn shops provide this service! Anyway, I asked the gals there if when I die I could have my ashes spread in the store and they agreed, so I guess I will be seeing you ladies again....one way or another! :-) LOL! read more

As the lovely and talented Anelle was helping me with my (free! impromptu!) beginning knitting lesson, a woman and two children walked through the door. The woman exclaimed, "so THIS is heaven!" I chuckled. But you know what? It's true. So much wonderful yarn! I'm used to getting my yarn at big box stores like Michael's so coming here was a real treat. Not only do they have super soft yarn made from wool, alpaca, and cashmere, but you're actually encouraged to TOUCH EVERYTHING! The service was super helpful. The ladies who run the shop are very knowledgable and were able to help me decide how much yarn to make for a hat or a scarf. I even came back the next day to get the yarn hanks bundled into skeins. The yarn here ranges from $7 for a nice wool to $45 for Mongolian cashmere. There was also a community of knitters at a table all working on projects and hanging out and sharing their projects. 3 months ago I walked into this yarn store and I've been anxious to get back there ever since (I live 3 hours away). The yarn selection and knit/crochet examples were fantastic. Super friendly and I love yarn shops that have sales bins! If you can't root around for 20 minutes looking at all the yarns that are 50% off, then I say, the shop isn't seasoned yet. But this place was great. I hate the SF super snob yarn scene and this is so the opposite. Nothing pretentious, but still a great selection of eco-friendly and high end yarns without the whole yuppie attitude if you don't spend $100. I wish it was closer to the city, but when I go back to relax in Mendocino, I am making this a definite stop. read more

I loved this yarn shop. The two ladies running the shop were knowledgeable, kind and inquisitive. The perfect ingredients to arouse inspiration. I dove into the large pile of discount yarn but, I also wandered around looking at the large selection of llama which is my preferred yarn. I loved the VERY large yarns and the wonderful hand dyed yarns that make their shop unique. The employees were so helpful and kind to suggest a free pattern that was available with the purchase of a particular yarn. They told me a great story about the history of the pattern and enlightened me as to some yarn I had never used before. The little yarn shop is situated in a lovely garden in one of the prettiest towns on the California coast. It doesn't get much better than this. Wow! This yarn shop goes above and beyond anyone's expectations of what a good LYS should be. The selection is so varied, with hundreds (maybe even thousands!) of colors, brands, styles, & weights that you almost can't take it all in during one visit. However, that certainly didn't stop me from trying. The shop owner was cheerful and helpful, but didn't hover as I browsed wide-eyed through all the shelves. The pricing on all the yarns was fantastic, either the same price you would pay at an online retailer or less. They even had some small skeins of Peruvian wool for less than $5! If you're in the area, or lucky enough to live nearby, I would definitely make this shop a destination for any fiber art folks. read more

This is the absolute best yarn store on the planet. When visiting Mendocino, which unfortunately is not often enough, I always stop to buy something! I am working on a project that had me stumped and even though I brought it to my local shop even they could not figure out what the error was. So I called the shop not even knowing if they would help me as I was not local. I was able to quickly e-mailed photos of the instructions and within 15 minutes I got a call back with the answer. It took some time for the lightbulb to go off and Adell was so patient with me as she had to explain several times how to fix the problem as the pattern had a mistake. Seriously, they should have some online classes. It's almost enough to make we want to move to Mendocino just to have this jewel in my back yard. read more

Sooooo helpful! I brought in two hanks of art yarn and asked for help winding it on the ball winder. Unfortunately it was twisted and as I was concentrating on untwisting it, I managed to totally mangle the yarn by wrapping the shaft of the umbrella swift. Two nice ladies who were there for the Thursday night drop-in were nice enough to spend an hour helping me to straighten it and wind it up! They couldn't have been more gracious. Personally I would have chopped my $30 ball of yarn into about 20 pieces if it weren't for them! Knitters are the "knicest" people! read more

I don't get up to Mendocino very often, but I make a point to visit this shop when I'm there. They have always been very friendly and helpful. Remember your "FIRST TIME"? ..... The very first time you ever set foot in a real, authentic, genuine, artisan LYS that sold REAL animal fibre yarns -Yes! A whole wall of real 100% wool from real 100% animals? (not just that ugly scratchy cheap all-acrylic neon colored chemical yarn, that immediately pilled & was a menace to knit with?... I KNOW you know what I am talking about here). ..... Remember that heavenly Zen enchantment that you had just been transported to another dimension? That incredibly peaceful feeling that you never want to have to leave -you could just look at & squish all those fabulous yarns for hours on end? ..... That time stands still & the excitement that there would never be enough hours in the day, months in the year, or years in a lifetime to knit up all the fantastic fun patterns? And Wow! All those those smooth silky birch wooden needles -so warm & soft & easy to knit with? .... That sense of affirmation & empowerment: every thing you need is right here in front of you.... Lots of other gals knit -now so can you! Yes! "Just Do It!"!!!! Enough with the dream imagery.... Yep! All this really happened to me in the month I decided I needed to re-learn to knit... After a 40 year absence. Way back in 2003, when I first entered the portals of Mendocino Yarn Shop, I was extremely tentative. My meager experience with knitting was limited to making ugly unused potholders at Brownies & Girl Guides. The outcome was extreme frustration & tendonitis due to metal needles & crummy yarn..... Remember Phentex? (with a land-fill half-life of 1000 years? Don't even get me started....) We had just dropped off #1 son at OSU & decided to immediately make haste for the coast, and then gradually drive all the way down to Mendocino. After getting settled in a charming B&B, we explored the "downtown". That's when my life changed forever.... I entered Mendocino Yarn Shop. I was the only customer for the first 15 minutes or so. Peaceful music was playing in the background while I poked around. I was embarrassed to admit that I was a KPDO (Knitted Potholder DropOut) - but I never felt shame, as I asked the owner for help. I had just purchased a Kids knitting book the week before & felt like I could handle the patterns therein.... There was one for Spiral Tube socks. It looked interesting, fun & bit of a challenge: In truth, the pattern spoke to me, saying, "KNIT ME, IF YOU DARE!".... right then & there I knew I would be off on an Alice In Wonderland Adventure! Soon I was kitted out with 7" Birch DPNs, cotton yarn with a trace of elastane in it, my pattern, explanations, demonstrations & heaps of love, encouragement & confidence! Absolute Magic!! Thank you Mendocino Yarn Shop! You literally changed my life! I thank you, my husband thanks you, my family thanks you & every person I have ever given a hand-knitted gift to thanks you! I am so happy to read all the other reviews and to know that Mendocino Yarn Shop is still going strong & continues to mesmerize & enchant as the years roll by!!! Sure there is truth in: "Knitting as Therapy", "Knitting as Creative Art", "Form&Function", and all sorts of other witty sage sayings. .... However my personal wisdom is: Knitting = Magic .... Traveling through Mendocino on a Colorado to British Columbia roadtrip, I was lucky enough to come across this yarn shop last summer. OMG....I LOVED this place. Wonderful staff...terrific yarn.....great atmosphere. If I lived closer, I would visit this store as often as I could. Of all the yarn shops I visited on this two week road trip (and there were many, as my husband and kids can attest to), this was my very favorite! Even my husband had a hard time leaving this store!
