What a great find! I was camping for a few days and on my last day decided to stop by this shop that had been catching my eye as I'd been driving by. So glad I did! I loved the eclectic worldwide collection of textiles, rugs, jewelry, pottery, etc. For those of you who remember the Cost Plus World Market of years and years ago, Ananse has a similar unique vibe. I cannot think of as well a curated and level of commitment to bring global crafts and artisan people to a local and even global consumer base, satisfying a desire to be part of the solution in this world of consumerism. Yet, there is no lack of quality inside the walls of this great homage. The proprietor's depth and width in understanding the elements available, the finished products, translating and evangelizing cannot be stated enough. I loved this place and I'm so glad I stopped in with some friends while we were visiting Fort Bragg. There were so many cool authentic looking tribal items so even if you don't end up buying anything (they're a bit pricey), it's worth the trip just to look around. The store is organized in a way that there will always be merchandise that meets your eye level, so no matter where you look, there is something new to see. Highly recommend checking it out if you have the time. Their handcrafted soaps smelt divine along with their perfumes. I ended up purchasing a beautiful flowy shirt from the $10 sale rack that hung outside! Can't beat that! read more

Great locals shop with so much support for the international arts & crafts by donating back and supporting those who make their goods (no "made in china" items here-truly legit one of a kind items). The lady working was so helpful in suggesting and locating items that we were specifically looking for. The handwoven basket from Portgual and the custom designed footstool from Morocco added just what we needed to our living room. Such high quality crafted items that are one of a kind. Love Ananse Village. Go at least once on my summer annual visits to Ft. Bragg. Even though I *finally* have a lovely market basket at the bottom of each flight of stairs in my SF home (they number three), I will not be able to stay away. Yes, I begin my Christmas shopping in summer. I find the salespeople friendly and helpful, not intrusive, It has never occurred to me that I was being watched. The merchandise is lovely, hand-made, and hopefully the makers of the objects for sale here are fairly paid. So we are helping a native people with our purchases. That is so very often not true. And t hose market baskets? Form follows function for sure, with beauty thrown in. read more

What I like best about AV is that it has a bunch of unexpectedly delightful stuff that was clearly assembled by one or a few people who seem to have opened the store so they could have a legitimate excuse to buy and stock and share stuff they think is really fun and beautiful with other people. A shop-there-all-day variety of stuff with a personal touch. It's one of the few, moderately dangerous stores where my wife and I both could spend all day browsing and end up wanting to buy everything. read more

This place is a real treasure. Went with my Mom and she spent over $200 but got some really good finds. From textured pillows you would find at high end stores for three times the price to delicate throws and gilded mirrored boxes this place has it all. Driving up 101 just South of Fort Bragg we first spotted Ananse Village, maybe 5 or 6 years ago. We burned rubber on the highway and U-turned into the parking lot. Last night we stayed in Fort Bragg again, mainly with the intention of stopping by today. This was our fourth visit. The place has tripled in size since our first visit. It's like the jackpot of all things African and other international goods. A wonderful trek around the world under one roof. Ananse has the largest inventory of Djembe drums and global fabrics that I have ever seen anywhere. You could spend two hours in there, and you will! Jewelery, African clothing, wood carvings, Moroccan ceramics to drool for, decorative lamps and wall carvings, rugs, oh yeah and African beads too. This is a fair trade operation. It started small and grew into what it is today because of the dedication of the owners who visit Ghana annually, meeting the craftspeople personally and hand picking the art found at the shops. Yes, that was meant to be pluralized ;-) as there is another shop right in town, more of a boutique. To be more factual there are three shops altogether, one in Ghana. The Last Hurrah. This place has a special memory tied to it. I visited this store on the last vacation with an old flame. We went to Glass Beach and on the way home, I saw a man making baskets outside of Ananse Village. Next to him were multiple stacks of vibrantly colored baskets. I pulled over and fell in love with everything inside, along with the people working there. Such great energy! I decided that I really wanted a basket to carry my groceries in and obsessed over finding the right one at the right price. I could poke around for hours at all of the beautiful items they had there and before I knew it, my Ex had purchased a random orange and blue basket for me and dragged me back out on the road. Secretly I was salty because I wanted to have a moment with my future basket so that I knew it was the one. Fast forward three years later. No longer in contact with the old flame but I use that damn basket every week for groceries. In fact, I'm looking at it now. Comfortably worn, yet I can carry massive amounts of food without fumbling with those reusable bags. It comfortably rests on my arm, no matter how heavy the contents. I get compliments on it everywhere I go and people ask where I bought it constantly. I only wish I could have had the mind to buy an extra one for my other arm. A beautiful spot for unique gifts. An unexpected surprise on Highway 1 is this spacious store loaded with items from a number of West African countries. There's a lot of jewelry, along with masks, furniture, woven baskets, and balafons, all fairly priced. But the biggest treat of all may be the huge selection of cloth hand-dyed in Ghana. Every piece is different, and there are hundreds to choose from. It's on the pricey side but worth a look. This is a fun place to explore for a unique gift or just for a fun cultural experience. read more

From the moment my girlfriend and I entered the store this lady would not stop following directly behind us, and remarking on everything we looked at. It ruined the intimacy of our visit and was very offputting. We decided not to buy the things we wanted because of the negative experience. She was trying to be nice and helful but its came off as overbearing and nosey. It felt as if she was waiting for us to steal something! Upon exiting she told us they had another store down the street for "hipsters" that was probably closer to our "price point". 1 star for bad customer relations. read more

We always stop at this store when we come to the Mendocino coast. They have the most beautiful Bolga baskets and at very reasonable prices. My kids and I love going into this place to explore. So much to look at and learn about. Jewelry to wood workings and cook books. Small items and bigger things to. Clothing and drums. Authentic wares from all over. Most of all I have a 10 year old and a 5 year old and they could look and touch a lot of the stuff without being evil eyed by the staff. Great store. Great stuff. But they lost two stars due to the overbearing nature of the sales woman. She was just trying to be helpful, but it was a bit much. I didn't feel like she thought we were going to steal something as a previous poster had said but rather, she honestly was trying to be helpful. I would have enjoyed spending more time there because there's a lot to see. But my friend who I was with, couldn't take it and had to go to the car. I did buy a couple of really cool things and I'll go back next time but I'll need to brace myself for the onslaught. read more
