Checked out area one day to see if we would enjoy staying there. Lots of families, kids etc. loved the area. Went in mid August when quieter. Loved our short stay. Staff very friendly. Very clean areas. You can rent golf carts .They have different theme weekends as well as activities available. We walked around, a lot of seasonal RVs ,spots for tent as well as RVs. We just spent 2 nights here. Weather was perfect! The people working the campground are very kind, friendly & helpful. We have been thinking about getting a seasonal lot, however after renting a golf cart & driving around the campground several times, we were saddened to see so many completely neglected campsites. Lawns that were in need of mowing and string trimming and campers that were moldy and long past their prime. We really wanted to like this campground a lot more due to the positive reviews, but sorry to say, this was a HUGE turn off for us. Because of this, we will look at other locations for a seasonal site. read more

I don't know about you but I'm a camping kind of guy, something about the woods, the dirt, and the fire... ohh oh ohhh arr (grunts and beats his chest). Then I met a camping kind of girl (though she didn't grunt or beat her chest, but I bet she could've). We then found three more camping yelpers and were off. Talk about middle of nowhere, we almost couldn't find the place at night. Pitched a tent (not funny Matthew, I know what you're thinking), make a late night dinner and drinks, start a roaring fire, and share some goofy stories. Thank god we had fire marshal L to keep the fire going, it was perfect for S'more boy MK to go to town, and then bug-man M gave us an idea of what was crawling all over us. I have to say that other then the company, my favorite part were the stars, they were unlike anything I've ever seen. The campgrounds have something for everyone. The site themselves are all pull up sites (with or without electric /water) but a nice distance from the main road and from other campers, but they also have trailer sites, and spots to park mobile homes. What's different about Mendota is that they have a recreation room inside the main office, with fun activities for the kids and they even offer a hayride at night. For the adults they offer fishing, a scenic walk, a nice swim in the lake, or hit a bucket of golf balls, but if you can't relax while camping then you have problems. Next to the main office they have a building with real toilets and showers, if you're into that sort of thing. You can also pick up some firewood located in between these two buildings. Mendota has many other pluses other then being only two and half hours from the city and moderately priced. It was a great relaxing weekend with some really cool peeps, thanks to a fantastic friend who I call P-tastic for short. ***Nicknames have been given to preserve the real nicknames that were given on-site... plus I just don't remember then after all this while. read more

Mendota Hills Campground - Campgrounds Near Me - Amboy, Illinois

We rented a camper at Mendota Hills for two nights. Their website listed a few amenities included, but there were actually more than we expected, like a pasta pot, some kindling wood, a lighter, and other helpful items. The strand of lights strung up over the deck was a nice touch, too. The inside of the camper was clean and well-maintained. Because of COVID-19, there weren't any planned activities like they would usually offer, but we still had a great time exploring the campground (very nicely maintained), boating, and swimming at the lake. Our girls loved the long inflatable waterslide, the large floating slide, and the floating saucers at the lake, and we also enjoyed the kayaks, paddleboat, and rowboat (all free with lifejackets available). There is also a playground where we spent some time in the evenings, with very nice play equipment, a covered pavilion, sand volleyball, and Gaga ball. One of the staff members (Drena) gave us a ride around the campground in her Taxi (longer version of a golf cart decorated like a taxi). She pointed out many places we hadn't seen yet, including the sunflower field and some really nice walking trails. The staff was very helpful whenever we needed anything. We had never rented a camper before, so there were a couple of things we weren't familiar with, and they were very patient with us. All of the other people we met there were also very friendly and welcoming. As we were checking out, one of the owners asked if there was anything they could improve, which was very impressive to me. I will not edit my review bc it is simply MY take on the campground. Enjoy and safe travels. I found Mendota Hills not worth the drive nor the money. This "resort" would be perfect if it were the LAST resort. There exist too many campgrounds nearby that are a far better campground. The ground we put our tent on was rocky, uneven and the ground seemed infested. Dense mosquito population existed when we were there. The area was unkept when we arrived. I wouldn't stay here again, even if I was given a free offer to return. Bottom of the barrel experience here and was most excited, when it was time to leave. I found Yogi Bear campground to offer better prices, a cleaner campground experience and overall just a better place to be. read more

I don't know if "resort" is exactly the right word for Mendota Hills campground, but we'll go with it since that's what's on their business cards. The five of us piled into a few cars and drove two hours west of town to a precious, tiny spot of land where a person can see the Milky Way in all its glory and encounter some seriously nice folks. Tents were pitched, food and supplies established, firewood procured, commence: two days of relaxation, chatter and grilled foods punctuated by occasional trips to the porta potties and to get more of the above mentioned firewood available on-site. If you want the water and electric, it's there. If you want to fish, take a walk, swim in the waterin' hole, hit a bucket of balls into the clearing, go for a twirl in the barn during the Saturday evening festivities, you can. If you want to stay say, holed up in your cul de sac of tents and a firepit, you can do that too. it's a cheap way to spend a weekend, a quick jaunt out of the city and frankly, if you've never seen more than 10 stars in the sky at any given point, really worth that nighttime view. read more

This campground has some of the most gracious, helpful, and friendly owners and workers you will ever meet. The Sunday church service is well attended. Pastor John does a wonderful job along with Glenda, Jaimie, and all who support in the music and fellowship ministry. Have stayed several times over the past few years and have already scheduled a future stay. The amenities are great and are being added to, including a remote control racing track this year. Great place to stay, wished we would have had more time; we were just over night. Facilities are resort like; there are three ponds, one for swimming, two for fishing and kayaking. The kayaks are provided. There is a playground, volleyball, and a basketball hoop. In addition to the curving drives there was a huge field where we could walk our dogs. Park requires them to be leashed, not a problem as our greyhounds are always leashed. There is also a convenience store in the office. My family and I spent a long weekend at Mendota Hills. It is close to home and has a beautiful property. We choose to sleep in tents during our stay. The rental sites were very spacious. Our only complaint with them were they are very uneven, rocky, and plenty of ant hills. Its great if you have an rv or pop up, not so great for tents. We had a blast at the lake there was plenty to do there for all ages, I liked the slip and slide the best. We also enjoyed the archery on Saturdays. We had bad weather during the nights there so it was a little disappointing that they had to cancel bingo. Kind of wish they could have moved it to inside the church. Going frog hunting was a blast and the kids were very excited to do the race the next morning. There was so much for everyone to do and the kids were able to run of and enjoy themselves. Jamie was very kind and heloful with any questions we had. My children enjoyed there first camping experience and I am thankful we choose Mendota hills for it. We can not wait to return and make more amazing memories. read more

We come to Mendota Hills Campground every year for Labor Day. We always have such an amazing time here! Aside from the beautiful campgrounds and clean bathrooms there are so many activities for everyone to enjoy! Kids have fun swimming at the beach, fishing and searching for frogs. Bingo is super fun along with playing volleyball on their sand court. Fun to ride the golf cart to the store or just along the trails. Baggo tournament is always a hit with our group as well. "Resort" is definitely not an accurate description, but definitely had a "right at home" feel. We spent Labor Day weekend at Mendota Hills, and even though it rained for part of the weekend, we still have a fantastic time. Mendota Hills is primarily patronized by seasonal RV residents, which I affectionately call "the locals," but that should not deter you from camping there. The locals were a hoot riding around on their tricked out golf carts and really did a great job at making us feel like we were part of the gang. There was also plenty to do. We took part in the Frog Jumping Contest, Archery, Kayak/Canoe races (as spectators, though we were highly encouraged to participate), hiking, Bingo, free Sunday breakfast, and we did get in a little dancing in at the barn on Saturday night. I think the highlight of the weekend were the staff. They all had terrific attitudes and chatted us up throughout the weekend. Jamie, who facilitated a few of the activities, was a ray of sunshine. You can tell the locals really love him and he did his best to get us to participate in various activities. There's nothing fancy about this place, which I think really makes it endearing. Though it's only 2 hours from home, it feels like another world. We plan to be back there soon! read more

Best campground we have ever been to. We drive over an hour to get there. We can't wait to become permanents. So much to do, so family oriented, very clean, great hospitality, and owners and workers are amazing. I recommend this place to everyone who talks to us about camping. Other than being a little out of the way, this was a very friendly and accommodating campground and staff. We were only overnight but from taking our reservation over the phone, easy pay on arrival and friendly escort to our site this made our stay there very pleasant. Went camping here for Labor Day weekend and had a wonderful time! We stayed in the section called The Alcove, which was walking distance from the store and restrooms. The campground hosted a bunch of activities for both adults and children during the weekend, and none of them disappointed. Friends and I played bingo 2 of the nights which offered cash prizes to the winners. There was a frog jumping contest for the kids each morning. There was also a bags tournament that we played in. We rented a golf cart which was nice to take to and from different lakes and explore the campeground. The bathrooms were clean. There is a cute dinner, Amboy Family Restaurant, just about 10min from the campground. We went there for breakfast one morning and it was delicious!! Overall this was a really great experience. All the staff I encountered on my trip were very pleasant and friendly. I would stay here again. read more

We went tent camping Labor day weekend , Great Time. We had about 6adults and 4 teens. Lots of activities, kids went swimming in the lake. We had 4 tents about 4 cars, rented 2 lots with electric and water. I recommend bringing your own drinking water, free shower and restrooms. This is not a Hotel but for the services offered and the price definitely worth the get away. Tractor hay rack rides.The night time view is awesome, have a nice open area to view the stars. Quiet time is 11 pm so do not plan on music and being loud. We had many canopies set up including tents. Friend set up lights which was nice addition to our campsite we had no complaints met a lot of nice people. Lot of seasonal campers and golf carts. Locals and other campers were friendly. Firewood is close by at office or just left of entrance there is more firewood for sale, ice at the store. We had free pancake and sausage breakfast, with juice and coffee on Sunday not sure if that is every weekend though. There is also a taco truck and brick pizza for fast food on sight ,hrs are limited but nice addition if you don't wanna cook for lunch or dinner. I would recommend if your looking for a getaway. There were only a few tent campers there lots of pop ups and Rv's.. We stayed 3 days and it rained twice. Amboy and Sublette were about 3 miles each way. Wal-mart in Dixon is close by 14 miles, if you needed to get supplies also. Sublette has a meat market. I would recommend to anyone who wants to pull in and stay the weekend. read more
