When travelling across the wide brown land, I tend to stop at a lot of bakeries. After a while they…read moreall blur into one (aside from the occasional reeealy good pie or pasty). The Morning Loaf Bakery in Keith is an exception. Walking in from the Dukes Highway side, you wouldn't even know it was a bakery. The main dining area better represents a shrine to retro, with a larger than life James Dean poster cooly staring across at you. Beyond the dining area lies the traditional bakery with all the normal pie warmers and pastry displays. The pies and pasties whilst being small are well priced and very tasty. I also tried an apricot slice, which was loaded with real apricots (probably the best apricot slice I've ever had). Adjoining the dining area is a retro lounge room, kitted out with all sorts of old school furniture, art and appliances. Pretty sure it's the first time I've ever had lunch in a 60s/70s living room, in a bakery. As if that wasn't enough, for those big interstate drives they also offer free tea and coffee to all customers. There really is no good reason to not stop in Keith.

There seems to be a number of places that my Dad always stops at when he drives from Adelaide to…read moreMelbourne and it turns out that this is one of them. Actually, it is quite conveniently located just off the main highway so when we hit Keith he always pulls in here for a cup of coffee. Actually, they offer free coffee and tea, however being the snob that I am I generally prefer my speciality teas (particularly English Breakfast). One thing I have to say about this place is that it is pretty cool, especially with the three rooms, one of them set out as a traditional American diner, another looking like a farmyard barn, and the third a nice lounge room. It's not just a coffee shop because they also have a whole range of snacks and other bites to eat. It's not a bad place, and I suspect if my Dad were making the trip again he would stop here once again.

I am just a visiter to this beautiful sea side community of Port Elliot in Australia. I was told by…read morefriends that this was the place to taste the local flavor. I was confused by the names of the menu items , but was able to read the description. I first tried a pasty. We do not have these in California or anything that compares to the flakey buttery crust with the delicious fillings. This meat pie was mouthwateringly good. Needless to say I went here a couple times during my visit. I was pleased to find out that this location is mom and pop run for over 20 years. The lines go out the door and down the street when everything is fresh. I was also told I needed to get the kitchnerbun for dessert. This was a huge pastry with whipped cream flowing out of the center. There were so many things to try in so little time. I finished off this treat with a coffee milk. ( see pictures) There isn't much parking, side streets are easiest. There isn't much dining room either, may I suggest the short walk to the picnic tables by the beach to enjoy your meal. The locals seem to just hang out outside and talk while they eat their meals. If I'm ever back in this area again, I will be dining here.

Ahhh, country bakeries why are you so darn good?…read more I have friends who make sport out of visiting bakeries whilst in regional towns to sample their specialities and versions of old standards. It would be easily done if you could put aside the fear for you waistline! This is definately one of the good ones. They are supposedly famous for their pasties but having tried both - the sausage roll is really something else and absolutely huge! There is a little seating outside and some park benches nearby but it's definately no dine-in establishment. Perfect stop for hungry sufers and sunday drivers!
