Initially, he struggled to follow directions, stay focused, and sit still during class, but the instructors were incredibly patient and never gave up on him. They continued to guide him, and now he's so much more focused and engaged in class. He even earned his first white belt in his Wushu test! We're beyond thrilled with his progress. I also love that it's a membership program, allowing us to attend more classes to practice when we can. I truly believe martial arts is a practice that benefits both body and mind. It builds valuable habits, just like they say at the beginning of every class: 'Gong fu is discipline of my body and mind. I am disciplined, have self-control, confidence, concentration, patience, and try as hard as I can at everything I do, both in and outside of the dojo.' I've even seen him doing better at school and we couldn't be happier.

This studio has plenty of complaints all over their yelp about horrible billing practices, not offering make-up classes (when out of town), etc. But because it is so close to where we live, I decided to give it a try. When I signed up, I was explicitly told that the membership was month-to-month and that I could cancel at any time. When summer break ended, I called to suspend my membership, but it was very difficult to reach anyone. I called the studio multiple times and left several messages with no response, which made the cancellation process unnecessarily frustrating. Eventually, I reached someone, but I was told that the next month had already been charged and that I would not receive a refund. They agreed to cancel the membership going forward. However, when the following month came, I was charged again. I went into the studio to resolve the issue and was told they use a third-party billing company and that they "have no control" over billing, and that I would need to contact the billing company myself. The staff was unhelpful and took no responsibility for resolving the problem. Based on my experience, this studio seems far more focused on collecting payments than on customer service or student satisfaction. If you're considering joining, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere and being very cautious about their billing practices.

After two years with Tim, this is definitely a long due review. There are so many positive things…read moreabout his style that I will try to organize them the best I can: 1) The level of detail in each class is insane. At first, this actually threw me off as I came from a gym where you "learn" something new pretty much every day. After two years of training under coach Tim, I now realize the importance of really digesting each technique over longer periods. With Tim, you will review the same move for weeks at the time, which allows you to polish small details that you would never think of if you were to drill a technique only a couple of times a week. By the time you finish covering that specific material, you have a real grasp of what you are supposed to do. 2) Tim tries to make you feel welcomed and part of the community. At other gyms, I remember feeling that people only cared about collecting my membership fees. Coaches and staff will greet you by name from day one... and they will never forget it (for real!). I think this speaks to the type of gym culture that Tim tries to cultivate. This is also reflected in your gym mates' behavior, as they are always willing to help. Big egos/unpleasant people are very rare (if there's any) at this place. 3) Tim is a no-bs bjj coach, period. You don't have to buy an expensive gi with the gym logo. There's no need to follow strict mat etiquette. You don't have to pay for belt promotions or anything like that. It's just so refreshing to find a chill coach like this. 4) Tim understands that things happen in life and that you may not be able to train for some time. I have been able to put my membership on hold when I was abroad for some months. After recently having a knee injury that needed surgery, I was able to put a new hold. No extra fees, no questions asked. Having this peace of mind is great! In short, Tim is an amazing coach!

I took private lessons and classes with him for awhile and I don't love anything in martial arts as much as I love BJJ. And, if I ever train in it again, it will be with Tim or someone equally as good. You should aim for something similar.

The VERY BEST Kudo instruction that you will ever receive in the United States!…read more Sensei Ito is not only one of the friendliest, most humble instructor's that you will ever find, but he also happens to be one of the most qualified Kudo fighters/instructors that there is. It is nothing short of a privilege to be able to train and learn under such a World class fighter with top-notch instruction! (It should also be noted that Sensei Ito has an extensive knowledge of combat/sport Sambo, as well as Jiujitsu) If you reside in the United States and have ever thought about learning Kudo, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Aside from being one of the only official Kudo Dojos in America recognized by the KIF (Kudo International Federation), you will not find better instruction elsewhere (even comparable to instruction in Japan)! Whether you are an inexperienced newcomer interested in learning the most realistic kakutogi fighting art, or a seasoned martial artist interested in transitioning into MMA or becoming the next Kudo World Champion, Kudo LA is the place for you.
