Huge mat. I mean just huge! Vibe: everyone at Meraki was extremely friendly, kind, and welcoming. The students, the professors, staff. Overall just a super solid dojo. They have women's only open mat from time to time and I think that is so neat. I haven't seen that in other places. The ratio of women is definitely higher than other dojos. So ladies, if you want to find sparring partners, this is definitely the place. It's super clean. Aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Bathrooms are equipped with showers. That's next level stuff. Amazing instructors and very clean facility. I was told by my company I'd be moving up to LA from OC so I looked for a new place to train and settled on Meraki. Amazing couple days until my company said I would be staying in OC/ South Bay... super frustrating situation because I loved the gym. First off, I've been hooked on the BJJ Lifestyle since the late 90's and trained at several well known studios during my on & off again journey. Around a year ago, an art store shut down and Meraki BJJ moved in and transformed that corner business into a beautiful training facility equipped with glass walls and skylights. Been there close to a year and I have yet to experience the facility dirty or unkept. You'll have to swing by to check out their locker room! The manager, Fritzie, is one of the nicest and down to Earth person that I have ever come across. She's always there to welcome you!! If you're reading this, you already know who the professor's are. An important trait of being a professor is having the ability to teach, which is not an easy thing to do. All 3 professors are able to convey the technique to the class and always receptive to questions. One of my biggest regrets in my jiu jitsu journey will be not having tried Meraki sooner. I've been grappling for a number of years now and joined Meraki in December of 2019. I already feel like I've learned more than I did in my last few years of training - this is due to the variety of instructors and high-level colored belts who train at the gym. On any given day, you might be instructed by a BJJ world champion like Isaac Doederlein, or Kenny Florian - a decorated former UFC fighter and all-around good human being, or Jason Hunt - a Judo and BJJ black belt who has a ton of knowledge. On top of that, since I've joined we've had various grappling celebrities come in to teach class or train with us. The level of wrestling and Judo at this gym is also unparalleled - there are Division 1 wrestlers and Judo Olympians who train here. Having said all of that - all of these high-level people would be useless if they weren't so kind to take the time to teach lower belts their knowledge. This is the major difference maker for me. Of course, most brown/black belts or world champions can smash me with their hands tied behind their backs. When those people take the time to show you the mistakes you made, and offer you advice on how to improve your game -- you will find yourself improving rapidly. If you're looking for an easy gym, this definitely isn't it. But if you're serious about learning and becoming a better martial artist and human being, then you should absolutely stop by Meraki. read more

This is one incredible jiujitsu academy. The classes are very well structured and the technique is top notch. The instructors pay very close attention to every student, finding the all details to correct your technique. Kenny makes sure you are doing it right and will sit there with you until you have the proper movement. All instructors here are very polite and enjoy having fun. Creating a relaxing environment, they truly make this feel like a home. The students (training partners) here all give that same warming welcome. There are no meatheads at this gym. Nobody is going super aggressive. You will get a tough roll, don't expect to just run through people here either. Just people who love to train, will give you a solid training experience, and keep you coming back. Trustworthy partners can be something hard to find in other academies. On top of all this the facility is super clean, spacious, and well designed. Exceptional locker rooms and in a great location. I have been training for 7 years now. I haven't trained here for long, but it is obvious that a lot of thought was put into every aspect of the gym. Everything from how the mats fit, decor, and overall vibe of the environment. The restrooms need a separate mention- they are better than what Equinox offers! The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction is excellent. Jason Hunt and Kenny Florian offer a diverse wealth of knowledge and are very detailed in structuring a curriculum that is conducive to your growth as jiu jitsu practitioner. Milestone Reached! What are the odds that a delayed massage appointment would end up with me earning my first stripe in Brazilian Jiu Juitsu?!!?! With 30 minutes to spare I took a short walk around the hood and stumbled across a beautiful space that looked more like an art gallery than MMA gym. The sign said "Meraki". They advertised "men, women, children, self defense" Simply curious about what they were offering I decided to take their first class free offer and give it a shot. I walked in with my nose ring and all To say I was a beginner would be a gross understatement. I've never even seen 2 people grappling. I've never watched an MMA fight (I think I tried once but couldn't manage to finish it as one guy was getting pummeled to the mat). I really had no clue about what I was walking into. My eyes have been opened to a whole new world and a plethora of learning opportunities have also opened. I want to send a HUGE shout out to all the professors at the academy @jhuntbjj @kennyflorian @me_max who have proven themselves to be consistent, professional, patient, super encouraging, knowledgable, and obviously highly skilled experts in their field. I can't thank you enough for everything you've been teaching me over the last several months. Every day I get my ass kicked, every day I learn something new and everyday I'm challenged to the max!! I've been to alot of BJJ academies, but this one takes the cake. Meraki is a great place to train for all skill levels - from beginners to advance; and, for the young and old. The instruction is awesome. The instructors and owners care about the students and the facilities, and you can really tell. The mats and the locker rooms are pristine. Clean towels and loaner gis are always available for new students and visitors. The manager, Fritzie, is super friendly, welcoming, and attentive to the members' needs, requests, and suggestions. All this care and attention creates a vibe and camaraderie that can't be described with words but only experienced firsthand. Finding parking is not a challenge. I have nothing but positive feedback about my experience at Meraki. As a lifelong martial artist and multidisciplinary athlete I've had the privilege of training under amazing coaches of all kinds. Teaching is its own art form that is separate from simply being proficient at a martial art, and the Professors and coaches at Meraki have it down. There is a constant pursuit amongst them to uncover the most fundamental truths of BJJ with an almost Jeet Kune Do mindset that with an understanding of these truths, one should be able to make the art form very much their own. I just want to start out by saying that I absolutely love training here. I've tried out many many places in different cities over the years and although many of them were good they cannot fully compare to what Meraki provides to everyone at their academy. The curriculum is well thought out ,especially for beginners that are new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or even new to martial arts. The facility is also always clean and well maintained, with showers in each locker room. Fritzie, one of the managers here, is so friendly and down right awesome that I sometimes forget shes not just one of my really good friends that's looking out for only me but actually gives her care and attention to each and every member. Her daily encouragements and high fives are a small highlight to my day and really motivate myself and others to want to return to the mats day after day. The instructors are also amazing here at Meraki, all of them being tenured martial artists. They attend to each student on the mats in easy terms without being ambiguous about what they may be doing wrong and will take the time to go around and correct when needed. They never do this in a way that just explains the technique in the same manner they showed during the group teaching but instead they add a personal touch by making an actual effort to break down the instruction the best way they feel for the individual student. I've also noticed a tendency that is often overlooked at academies and that is the staff here can almost predict when the class sizes will be large and so they have multiple black belts on the mats to help their students instead of thirty students vying for the attention of just a single instructor. I could go on and on about all of the great things Meraki succeeds at but I highly recommend anyone reading this review to just come down to the academy, step through those doors toward Fritzie's office and let Meraki Brazilian Jiu Jitsu enrich your life. read more

I've changed at nearly every school in West Los Angeles at some point some just for one or two classes. It's a blessing to be able to go to different schools in this area and roll with different people. With a training style that allows for one to stay as relaxed as they want or to go all in with as much energy as they want. I can't say how grateful I am for this gym!
