A legit market frequented mostly by locals as best as I could tell on a recent visit. You can pretty much get anything you want from fresh produce, meat, seafood, clothing, shoes, shoe repair, and so much more. You could readily spend several hours here, but quite crowded in some areas. I was just passing through as part of exploring Merida -- and definitely worth a visit in my opinion. Hubbers and I came through here twice during our weeklong stay in Merida simply to explore and maybe score some souvenirs. This whole place felt so familiar as it is reminiscent of many public markets in the Philippines. Everything is sectioned off - religious relics on adjacent aisles, shoes and clothing in another area, some eateries serving hot food (how they can stand this being inside and hot is still beyond me), then the very many fruit vendors. You have to option of buying and prepping the yourself, or you can get 'em peeled and sliced and ready to eat. I also saw plenty of kibi vendors (which, I regret to say, I didn't get to try.) I left empty handed, but it was an experience just simply walking through. I'd return even if it's just to try a street kibi! read more

BEST MARKET IN MERIDA - I used to wonder why some of the smaller markets in Merida were less frequented but then I found the Mercado Lucas de Galvez and the near neighbor Mercado San Benito. This one focuses heavily on produce and spices, with a smattering of other interesting things ranging from shoe repair to copying keys. It's an eclectic blend frequented almost exclusively by locals, It makes sense as it is noisy and busy and that scares a lot of tourists away. But if you want to experience a true local market, and have a couple hours to just get lost and find yourself, this is the market for you. Definitely worth a visit and if you find the place that copies keys, right near there is a stall that makes some of the freshest juice with the best fruit I've had here. And if you are feeling adventurous you can stop at one of the scores of food stalls and try your luck with the local cuisine. Do not miss out on exploring this market when visiting Merida. Visiting Merida under Yucatan's COVID-19 guidelines the market was a little quieter than we'd heard. We entered through a tent with sanitizing spray, got hand sanitizer, and had our temperature taken. It was fun to explore the market, see a lot of the unique items, and buy some food to cook at our Airbnb. You can find everything from sandals to cooking utensils, jewelry to fresh flowers. We purchased some produce, fresh chicken breasts, and fresh warm corn tortillas. We explored the flower market, poultry stands, spice markets, and had some lunch, and bought some snacks. We can't wait for our next trip to Merida to see more of what this awesome market has to offer. Be sure to bring cash and especially smaller denominations! A number of the times we bought were just a few pesos and change on larger bills is not always easy to come by. read more

This is a must do whilst in Merida. Strap in - it's a bustling journey - it's insanely busy and loud and and and...- but this place is where it's at. Incredible vendors of all shapes and sizes: food and housewares. They will let you taste and teach you if you can speak a little of the language. You can't go to Merida and not experience this place: it's fantastic. Don't go hungover or dehydrated. Go a little hungry - and get the tacos and the Tortas at the main entrance. Walk and purchase the local peppers, the bagged kilos of mole to fly home and be the envy of your friends. Also - Get the horchata at the exit. This place is just magical. read more

Some of the chefs in the group posted beautiful photos of this market when we got back to Chicago. I was in pure survival mode, trying to make it through the heat and crowds. There was a lot to see, much in the way of native fruit and vegetables. This is a great market to buy the indigenous spice rubs known as recados. In the fish section, a small group of young men was playing badass, rowdy music. It fit the market perfectly I only wish I'd heard it on the way in, to psych myself up! read more

Everyone should see this even if you don't come to buy anything. It's truly a maze! Much larger than we realized when we walked in. I really enjoyed seeing the variety of produce and fresh tortillas among other things. read more
