I had a great time poking around but I'll bet this place is SWAMPED during high season. I stopped at the little stand that makes gorditas and assorted mexican specialty dishes (you can see pictures from other reviewers) and had a chicken and cheese taco that they first stuffed and egg into! They actually separated the layers in the corn taco and poured an egg into it before heating it up in the griddle... very cool and very good.

Be sure to stop by the Trocadero antique store (just across the street from the market) to see a shop full of quality antiques (Mexican and European) at fair prices. Suggest arriving after 9:00 am since that's when most dealers are just beginning to set up. If you mention "trocadero" to taxi drivers they'll get you there (somewhat difficult to find on your own). I've never experienced any safety concerns at the market.

The downside is that so many of the shops feel quite redundant that it's easy to bypass businesses when you know you'll see another shop selling basically the same things... magnets, masks, coasters, ashtrays, Virgin Mary plaques, you name it (Photo 8). There are two covered blocks of vendors after which we found ourselves in Mercado Ignacio Ramírez, a more open space featuring fresh produce, flower stalls, and fast local food stalls. This place is in the heart of downtown Guadalajara. A definite must stop. The outside is so dirty, tons of trash and musty puddles of water everywhere. But honestly, I think it's part of the experience. Upon entering, the restaurant workers are really pushy to have you sit at their stalls. Be strong and walk past them. The ones by the door are usually way more expensive than the stalls on the interior white lots of more interesting food options. As far as food goes, it's really a hit or miss depending on where you decide to eat but most places are a hit! Just be ready to be interrupted by vendors selling anything from candy to cheese graters every few minutes. Also, tons of beggars asking for money. Overall a fun place to visit if you want an authentic cultural experience. It's not for everyone but for me, I absolutely love Mercados, the good and the bad.

It felt very unsafe due to the extreme crowds and the constant pressure from people asking for money. Carrying a purse or personal belongings was nerve-racking the entire time. This is not a place I would recommend for shopping, especially if you're not familiar with the area or traveling with valuables. However, there are many other great stores one street before you reach San Juan de Dios with plenty of options to browse and shop in a much calmer environment. I strongly recommend going there instead.
