I had a great time poking around but I'll bet this place is SWAMPED during high season. I stopped at the little stand that makes gorditas and assorted mexican specialty dishes (you can see pictures from other reviewers) and had a chicken and cheese taco that they first stuffed and egg into! They actually separated the layers in the corn taco and poured an egg into it before heating it up in the griddle... very cool and very good.

There are two covered blocks of vendors after which we found ourselves in Mercado Ignacio Ramírez, a more open space featuring fresh produce, flower stalls, and fast local food stalls. The menu had great potential but the food was just not up to par, I ordered the chili rellenos and by the time I received my food the cheese was coagulated and cold but the flavors were spot on. My dining partners ordered a salad and a veggie burger, the veggie burger was not cooked all the way and the salad was a bit warm and soggy. A modicum of caution kept me from doing so and only decreased my enjoyment of the place marginally. Mercado Hidalgo is that bustling market that sells pretty much every sort of (Mexico-adjacent) food one can imagine as well as a wide assortment of other things. It's picturesque, stimulating, and colorful and I'm not sure we have anything equivalent in the US. All the more reason to visit. I walked out with Mexican candy (a safe bet) and a brain full of images of this large place knowing that I'll settle - a bit sadly - for a state-side Shrimp Cocktail now that I'm back at home.
