I walked into the branch on Friday, June 10th to make a payment on my auto loan. I made the payment…read morewith the teller, Whitney, and then asked if she could refund my late fee. The late fee was applied to my loan because I made my very first payment late. My first payment on the loan was due on the 2nd of April but I made the payment on the 18th of April. The teller, Whitney, told me that I would need to speak with the manager regarding my late fee. I waited in the lobby for a few minutes and then spoke with the manager, Rebecca, in her office. I introduced myself and told her that I wanted to have the late fee reviewed to see if it could refunded. I explained that I had a bad customer experience when I first opened the auto loan but hoped that she would refund the late fee as a one-time courtesy. She curtly told me that 'they don't refund fees because it's the policy'. I asked her to clarify that policy and explained that I would be setting up auto payments with my other bank to ensure that my payments would be on time going forward. I also explained that I'm a full-time student at Central Michigan University and that I needed to leave in a few minutes to head to my afternoon lecture. Rebecca told me that she couldn't refund the late fee because it's a loan and that 'fees can't be removed'. I found this explanation to not make any sense. At this point, I explained to Rebecca that I used to be a bank manager for over 10 years. I was a manager for Bank of America and Capital One. During my time as a bank manager, I always worked to build relationships with clients. I refunded many fees as a bank manager, and I always looked at the client in front of me and not the 'policy'. Rebecca looked at her desktop and told Rebecca then told me that she would refund the fee from me if I brought in my out-of-state vehicle title. I explained to Rebecca that I had already registered the title with the state of Michigan and that I had brought in the same title to that very branch when I first open the loan. I felt insulted. Here I am a graduate student who will become a physician assistant by next year and more than likely command a competitive salary. My partner, the co-signer on the loan, is a software engineer currently employed and commanding a competitive salary. These are all factors that I believe the manager, Rebecca, should have considered in wanting to continue to build a relationship with me. But instead, she did not. Rebecca told me that she would refund the late fee if I would bring the title into the branch as if I were a gopher. I am woman of color and I dare say, that is all Rebecca saw in her interaction with me on Friday. If I could, I would close my savings and auto loan today and never do business with Members First Credit Union. I no longer want the fee refunded!
