Still my go to, the amount of staff have drastically dropped over the years. Be prepared to sit in the shop for half a day. I'm only giving this place 3 stars and not 5 bc sometimes they can be intentionally rough if your hair is tangled, detangling/combing hair is a natural part of washing and blow drying. HOWEVER, the lack of integrity- towards Your own and judging based off hair or "what You don't want to do/what You do for a living"... is why I'm writing this. The owner, I presume, assumed My hair wasn't able to be put in rollers. This is the SECOND time I've give her the opportunity to give My hair the love it needed. I expressed this to her as well! She giggled. To which i hoped she would take that as an opportunity to "provide the best customer service". When she washed My hair... very ruff! Again, my hair needed the wash... so I dealt with it. But she scratched My scalp. Then it came time for rollers.... My length isn't the longest- yet, much longer than some others. Being from where I am- Im well educated on wash & sets as well as which rollers fit in my hair. So i specifically requested a particular color roller. Based off of that color roller- the parts can not be as big as other roller colors. She parted big the second roller attempt she began to get frustrated and pulled them out my hair, "it's not staying- it's not staying". She lacked effort! I explained to her that I needed a certain color. She claimed she tried it all... BS.! She chatted her nonsense rudely about how she been doing for a living blah blah blah. This is when I decided I was going to YELP. Eventually, as they did to Me My 1st visit- LITTLE BUNS IN MY HAIR!!! not to mention... it took My hair almost 2hrs to dry because of her lack of effort & professionalism! When time to pay, she said "You good!" While opening the door. Now... ok "I got my hair washed for free" but not leaving with what I left My home for on My self care day... is what's ridiculous. I do not appreciate nor respect when My own people forget where and why they're in business. I expect better. Not to be judged. The job was not executed... as a customer I AM NOT SATISFIED. This place did such a wonderful job! My hair feels so silky and smooth. I found this place while searching for a hair salon on Yelp. It was a Monday, and from my knowledge a lot of Salons are closed on Mondays. Well this place is opened on Sundays and Mondays which is unheard of of the salon world! I was greeted by a nice lady (I forgot her name). There was a language barrier but she used google translate when she wanted to communicate with me. I was the only customer there so I was in and out. My hair came out so beautiful after Juana was done with it. She had noticed that I had a bald spot by the back of my neck from wearing my hair too tight in a bun and proceeded to tell me how to take care of my hair and how to wear it to work so I wouldn't keep damaging my hair. Then she let me know how often to come and get my hair trimmed because there was some damage. Prior I had been going to Hair Cuttery to get my hair colored and the lady I saw there never informed me of a bald spot. So, from now on I will only come to Merengue for haircuts at the very least. I will definitely be back next month to get my hair colored. They were all so nice when I was getting my hair done. It hurt a bit, but that's because I'm extremely tender headed. My one and only complaint is that the hair dryer was extremely hot and it left a tiny burn mark on the top of my head. Perhaps come by and check to see how the heat is going with your clients. That's the only bad thing I can say. This place is wonderful. It's right up the street from my house. I can't believe this was my first time going there. Thanks again. Great job. Update. I have really curly hair and it's very thick and the truth is, most places around here (at least the ones I've been to) don't know how to handle it. The last lady kinda panicked after she washed my hair and noticed how thick and curly it really is. But at Merengue Hair Studio, they knew exactly how to tame these curls. So I went to this place the first time in October to get my hair colored, didn't get the color I exactly wanted but it was close and I grew to like it. That first time tho they had some guy wash my hair and he had stiletto nails and was scraping the f*ck out of my scalp, which isn't good because you're supposed to be gentle to your scalp. I was legit in the shop from 1-6 but it was busy & i was getting colored so I let it slide. Now yesterday i went to give them another try & something more simple so I got a wash n set.... first off I was there for 4hrs and it was not busy at alllllllll. The blowout was good until Juana convinced me to trim my ends, I said ok but she botched it so bad and I'm just now realizing it the next morning like it's horribleeeeeeeeee, it looks like a bad layer job I want to cry so baddddddddd.... never going back to this place read more

WOW! They CAN DO hair. All different textures. My daughter gets her hair straightened here. It's called a wash and a set. They don't use a flat iron just a blow dryer. EVERYONE that leaves this place is amazed at how their hair looks and feels. No one in Virginia Beach can make hair look this good! Walk-ins only. Major thumbs up for the speed with which I was in and out of the place. I arrived at 9:30 and was out by 11:30, with 9 months of new growth that she tackled. Keep in mind, that i did not get a blow out; once my wash and set was complete, I just asked her to take my rollers out and wrap my hair with the bobby pins ($2 extra). I don't really care about having my roots straight, i just wanted clean hair that I didn't have to wash. I was very happy with the shininess and bounciness of my hair, and will return. Major thumbs down for the attitude of the girl, Juana, who did my hair. When I arrived, she was sitting in the chair nearest the door and did not greet me as I walked in. Hmm, okay then. I spoke first and let her know that I had 9 months worth of new growth and that my hair would be tangly, but that I had detangled it before arriving. She scowled and proceeded to tell me that having that much new growth would cause tangles. Duh, I just told YOU that. Whatever. Wisely, she detangled my hair once again before washing. I loved that she washed my hair without manually tangling it up too much. Mid-wash, she used that scrubby brush thingie to scratch my scalp (which felt great!) and asked if I was itching anywhere. She added conditioner and combed it through, rinsed, set my hair and then after an hour, took the rollers down, sprayed my hair and added a bit of oil. Her attitude stank throughout the whole process, however her technique was flawless. I paid $42 for the wash and set without a blowout. Maybe next time she will have a better attitude, or maybe I will get Luisa or one of the other women working there. At any rate, they were good enough for me to give the shop another shot. read more

I really like this place when i lived in Va Beach area back in 2009-2010 i went there to get my daughters hair done a few times & they do awesome work. I recommend Lasha or Luisa they are the only ones ive actually taken my daughter to. But from what ive seen everyone there does great work. I dont live in the area anymore but when i visited recently i stopped in & took my daughter there recently while i was in town & they were able to her right in and do a natural blow out ! This is a great establishment with wonderful hair stylist. The only downfall would be the fact that customers are waiting over 2hours to be helped. I understand numerous individuals are coming in to be serviced but the stylist are not concern with the wait for each person. The best Dominican salon in Hampton Roads hands down! The staff is really knowledgeable on hair types and products. My favorite is Lasha, always go to her. She takes her time with your hair and will give you little tips/advice on how to keep your hair healthy and strong. She laid my hair to GAWDS with just a blow dryer, no flat iron. Which is impressive not many stylists know how to leave your hair silky straight without the use of a flat iron. She doesn't rush through you even if it's busy, she takes her time, is really meticulous about her work, and is friendly and talkative. She simply knows what she's doing. I had started going there since I was about 13 years old when a woman named Luisa worked there. ( I'm now 18) After she left due to being pregnant, I was stuck with either Lasha or Juana doing my hair. Juana did my hair before a formal dance and basically messed it up because she rushed through it because she was in the middle of buying a house lol. They are extremely unprofessional as Lasha openly parades around cursing around kids and ridiculing customers in Spanish. They are rude and just ugh. I know that Dominican blowouts are the trend ( no matter how bad they are for natural African American hair).. But Go spend your money somewhere else. They are not nice people and they jack up the prices for mediocre work. read more

Actually heard her brag proudly about being a bitch to anyone including her husband. But what bothers me most is how she talks about the patrons while they are being serviced. She talks about non-Spanish speaking client right in front of them in Spanish. Encouraging her staff to laugh and join in on the ridicule. Hope she reads this and think about changing her attitude. This is a mixed review. I'd these guys 2.5 stars if I could. The good? They are the only Dominican salon in the area open on Sundays, which is super convenient for busy women. Ambiance is nice, with bright colors on the walls and a vending machine there for customer convenience. The staff works together to get everyone out at a reasonable time. I was out after about 3 hours. The bad? Like a lot of Dominican salons, you are there for one reason alone - wash, set, and blowout. Every customer is a cog in a wheel. There is not a whole lot of interaction with the customer. Staff could behave a little more professionally. There is little to no consultation. There is no deviation from what they do. I have naturally 3C hair, thick and curly, not coarse and wiry. After sitting under the dryer for an hour, one of the women proceeded to blow dry my hair. The dryer was soooooo hot, it felt nuclear. She had me put a towel on my face and around my ears so I would not get burnt. If she taken the time to ask me questions about my hair or just looked at it she would have seen that much heat was not necessary. Then after enduring that, she flat ironed my hair. I really did not need that much heat, especially three kinds. I overheard one of the staff saying to a customer that deep conditioning was required every time. I'm not sure that's true but if they used a little less heat, maybe they wouldn't have to add back moisture to the hair. My result? Sleek, straight hair that was limp for the rest of the week and a scalp that was dry. It looked pretty but felt dry and "stripped." read more
